Giants to Retain Special Teams Coordinator Thomas McGaughey www.si.com/nfl/giants/news/giants-to-retain-special-teams-coordinator-thomas-mcgaugheyAccording to multiple reports, New Giants head coach Brian Daboll is reportedly planning to retain Thomas McGaughey as his special teams coordinator. McGaughey, 48, has been the Giants special teams coordinator since 2018, when then-head coach Pat Shurmur hired him. McGaughey was then retained by Joe Judge, who had a special teams background, and now Daboll. Under McGaughey, the Giants special teams finished 10th overall in the league this season, according to Rick Gosselin's annual special teams rankings, a marked improvement from their 19th-place finish in 2020. McGaughey reportedly had interviews with the Panthers, who ironically fired former Giants special teams ace Chase Blackburn, who replaced McGaughey in 2016, and the Los Angeles Chargers.

I thought our specials dropped off in the second half of 2020 and wasn’t anything special since. Can’t say I’m thrilled to hear this.
I am getting the feeling that outside the offense there may not be very many coaching changes to this team now that word is Harbough is taking the Minny job.

It seems coach's along with QBs are going to be at a prime this off season. There are a lot of changes in the league. I think the reason they fell off as it was with the Defense was, a direct result of our offensive problems. (O-line). The offense could not stay on the field and we were punting way too much.

I think the offensive staff is in for a gutting, but it doesn't look like the other 2 staffs are gonna get changed too much. Though even on those, Daboll could make changes while keeping the same men in charge.

This Also special teams usually is at the mercy of team depth as many guys regularly on specials get elevated to starting jobs due to injuries/covid snd we have practice squad guys elevated for specials A lot of time you see special teams fade at the end of the year because of this

Good to know the Giants prioritize in a unit that was horrible last year. Teflon Tom has survived two regime changes. Like herpes, you can’t get rid of the guy.

The special teams unit outside of Gano, was garbage last year. You can sell me Graham being retained, this make’s absolutely no sense.

I posted the list a few weeks back. Need to make cap space and sign someone new.

Either the guy is a good coach or...
Tin foil hat time, Giants are getting sued for racial discrimination. Those cases are decided by two ways
one way is if there's something in writing that blatantly is racial discrimination or if multiple employees were spoken to in a blatantly racially discriminative way and they testify along with witnesses.
The other way is an evaluation of the pattern of the organization's hiring/firing behaviors. For example, if you have had 3 layoffs in the last 5 years of a staff of 500 and those 500 people are pretty similarly evaluated and there's say, 300 non minorities and 200 minorities. And during those layoffs if the company gets rid of 180 minorities and 40 non minorities, then now you have a pattern of the company and can win the case.
Now apply that to the Giants. Firing as few minorities as possible helps them show that there is no pattern of discriminative hiring behaviors.

Our s/t was ranked 10th last year. A change was not needed. The last thing the Giants want to do right now is a lose a Black coach.
Those two guys are their key witnesses in their Flores case...lol..

So the only real change to our team is the OC and HC...
They had to fall on the sword.

Not a big deal. Judge would have fancied himself an expert on specials and heavily influenced those teams and the players chosen to be on them. If you can coach you can coach and be malleable under a different staff. ST basically doesn’t matter anymore anyway. You need a good punter and kicker. The rest of it is being taken out of the sport with rule changes.

question is where does he go in the draft is he good enough weapon to get up in the 3rd or 4th round that is a big weapon if he can change the field position almost from anywhere he punts from. Now hang time matters Dodge had a booming leg but could not directional kick to save his life and would sacrifice hangtime for distance.
