QB in 2023

Jimmy G will prob be avail I think it's a strong possibility Jones is gone but I'm not buying the Jimmy G narrative whatsoever. The trouble with Jimmy G is the time commitment you’d probably have to give him. If he’s take two years? He’s never going to be the guy but you can be competitive looking for the guy with him on the roster. But as a 3+ year replacement? Not a chance.

I can't engage in a conversation like this one.
The premise would have to be:
Now that the season is over and we all know that Daniel Jones is not our next marquis quarterback, let's take a look at the veterans that may be available in FA.....
In the meantime I'm locking in on Mayfield or Darnold.

What I like about this thread is the acknowledgment that Jones’ replacement doesn’t have to be a high draft pick from 2023. I hate that assumption. It’s like going to a bar and saying “I’m going to marry someone here”. Really??? Most (65-70%) of first round QBs don’t sign their next deal with the team that drafted them (at least since 2012ish). So I don’t mind looking for a good QB from somewhere else, at the same time as doing your due dili in the draft. I don’t mind a stop gap QB until the FO sees their future franchise QB. Isn't that what Jones is now? Giants fans aren't going to wait another year with another seat warmer while Dabool/Schoen wait for our future QB to graduate.

The 2023 draft class is loaded with NFL caliber QBs and the Giants WILL draft one in the first round…….Schoen is going to the Ohio State game….CJ Stroud is the early choice for top QB in the 2023 NFL draft…….they are moving on from Duke boy Jones.

It's why they signed Tyrod for 2 years But even if he has to come in and save Jones this year, I don't see any scenario where he would be named as the starter next year. I don't believe that is Daboll's plan. At least I sure hope not. Whoever the QB is in 2023, it has to be a long term commitment. These guys don't have forever to start producing competitive football.

I really dont think Jones is going to crash and burn at all. He may not play well enough to become the franchise but he will certainly play well enough to stay the starter. Taylor will only be needed if Jones gets hurt. I agree, and barring injury, they do not want a scenario where Taylor is the starter

Not one game into the season and again, it's who's replacing DJ in 2023
Like it or not DJ is the best QB talent on this team barring injury he is the starter for the season.
I want DJ to succeed for the Giants team sake, realistically do I think he has a tough hill to climb yes but insurmountable at this point, no
Regardless, I am willing to give him a shot, since there is nothing to lose at this point
Root for the guy already...

If I'm a betting man DJ is not back next season, but if he is, that means he deserved it, and that would be good. It'll be a fun year to watch some of these QB prospects in college this season. However, as much as I know we'll be bad this year, I'm not so sure we'll be bad enough.. that being said all DJ really needs to do is be mediocre and carry this team to 7-8 wins and he makes it very hard to move away from him, bc the giants wont be sitting where they need to, to scoop up a top QB prospect, but way to early to anticipate all of this..
By midseason we should know.

I am looking for the best case and he turns that elusive corner. There's a small chance he does that

The reason I feel more than not that Daniel Jones' departure may be a foregone conclusion is that he has to establish some sort of consistency and he has just one season to do it, but that being said there is a chance because Daboll and Schoen could compare him to first-year Jones and see if the ability matches or if he plays good enough they could tag him, give him that "second interview" and then decide based on that. I would love it if he ends up blowing all of us out of the water and makes it easy.

I don’t think Schoen and Daboll are going to manage or coach based on fan expectations. I think they’ll be politically smart, but they both seem too determined to worry about fan pressure after 12 months. . If they start winning more games, when they find their franchise QB is not as relevant. No one’s asking for regime change in SF and their franchise QB is their backup now. If the Giants stay below 7 wins after year two, then it’s back to John and whether he thinks he’s on the right track firing every two years or whether he gives Schoen as much time as he gave Getty. It’s not really comparable but I have to hire people as part of my career. I’d rather die on the hill of doing what I can to find the right guy and suffering because I haven’t, rather than hiring the cream of the shit and then having to answer for how bad they are. They may pick a QB that is the cream of the shit in the draft and do the same thing I mentioned, win enough games despite the QB play. I’m never advocating against drafting a QB. I hate the “pick him in 2023 or 2023 is your last year” mindset.

Daniel Jones' major issues are:
1. Pocket awareness/ball security 2. Staring down his reads/turnovers 3. Injuries
Those coupled with the fact that he was drafted by Gettleman, who I simply can't see being a secret genius in hindsight, make it very hard for me to think he is the guy.
Now, maybe he has an MVP season this year; how many of you realistically see that happening?

Then they’ll be pressure to improve in 2023 or John could get trigger happy. So you know you have 12 months. If we have 4-5 wins will be close enough to draft a QB without selling off the next 3 years to move up, or can you accumulate draft picks trading down and using a game manager for a year at QB? If you win 7 games this year, and Jones is average (winning some for you, losing some for you), you can tag him and keep building out the other fundamental parts of this team that increase wins. 7 wins this year buys you two more years I think. Jimmy G is not awesome. Tannenhill is not awesome. Those teams are in it every year. I think there’s ways for this team to improve whether Jones sucks or not. Whether we draft a franchise QB or not. We haven’t had a vison for team building hear other than “from the lines out” which isn’t really a vision. It’s just a strategy to prioritize acquiring pieces. This FO and HC are building an actual culture here (it’s why I think Toney is in more trouble than he realizes), they’re rebuilding an FO that has literally been ignored for 20 years while the rest of the NFL was updating theirs. We all hear “greater than the sum of the parts”. That’s their strategy. Create a team where they’re outplaying their talent level. Other teams do this. We haven’t since a couple years under Coughlin.

Thats a substantial factor in their decision in keeping Jones even if he has a good season in 2022. As of now Schoen is saying that Mara is letting them do their jobs and they are just keeping him informed. If they have success I feel that situation will only get better. Meaning Mara will continue to "just be an owner" and not a voice.

I think DGs main goal was to change the lockerroom also and build culture also, maybe worded differently. Schoen and Co. will need to show results within 3 years for them to keep thier jobs in the current NFL. I am not sold as I have seen this song and dance before. This year will be a good indicator of Dabolls ability . Next year we shoud see Schoen find more players that will fit the team better and hopefully start reaping the benefits of this years draft. 2025 should be the year it all clicks.

By year 3 with even below average luck I think this team will be out of the cellar and that will be enough for John given the last 10 years. No one talks about it but to me the weird risk is to avoid the non-football media disasters. Benching Eli got Reese fired, it because he benched Eli, because of how it was handled. Player DUIs, legal troubles, stuff like that could get in his way. But I already think regardless of how we perform this year, 2023 will by this regime more time than any regime has had here since Coughlin/Accorsi/Reese.

Getty is so hated that fans don’t remember what a dumpster fire our locker room was. He absolutely fixed that. We had players refusing to play. Literally. He’s just a GM from the 90s and he’s playing with 90s tech in the 2020s (metaphor). I don’t think the Giants record matters at all this year. If they win 3 games it’s because Jones wi be hurt or horrible and it puts them in a position to draft a new QB in the first 2-4 picks, and I think that buys them 2 more years. I honestly don’t think they have less than 3 years because I think they managing John and the media and fans and players differently than Getty ever did.

When I say plays well, I am really talking about a lot of the intangibles that seem to be missing, not necessarily any specific statistics per say. Same. If Jones wins as many games for us as he loses (not record wise, impact wise) he’ll get tagged. He can get tagged and we can draft a QB in the first round. The cutting of Matinez should open up fans’ minds to think a little more outside the box. 2 weeks ago if you polled giants fans and asked if Slayton would be on the 53 man roster 9 days before the opener, I’m sure 99% of fans would say no. For years the GM seemed dumber than the typical fan. That’s not the case anymore. This GM does things fans don’t consider, and when they do the reaction is “oh, I see it now”. That’s refreshing. I’ll admit my own stupidity. In the draft when all the tackles were available at 5 I was like “he’s got his pick of t he litter!!!”, when he chose Thibodeaux I was shocked. Two seconds later I saw it. He knows a tackle he loves will be available at 7. Wow. An adult is running the draft for us. And I’ll add I don’t think it’s as simple as “how Jones does”. What does Schoen think of the QB prospects?. How far are we from drafting the one we want? How many picks would it take us to move up for the one we want? How many picks could we get moving down? For once I feel like we’re in good hands and the smartest man in the room is the GM.

Perfectly said….next year they will recognize a draft pick QB that they can work into their system…and do whatever means is necessary to acquire said draft pick. If Daniel Jones gets hurt again, or plays remotely average …he’s still gone. Lol at we will just use stop gaps until we go 0-17 and magically find the franchise in 2025

the luxury Daboll and Schoen have is if Jones isnt the guy then their clock starts over next season. The reascent history of the owners does not bode well for that assumption. I assuming, even if Jones doesnt work out, there will be a good measure of success in general to hang their hats on for the first season. Especially the pile of crap they were left with.

I think he did some things that fans have forgotten or won’t acknowledge, because ultimately he was in way over his head in the modern NFL and shouldn’t have been hired in the first place. The advantage for Schoen is if he’s an average GM, he probably gets to stay. But I already think regardless of how we perform this year, 2023 will by this regime more time than any regime has had here since Coughlin/Accorsi/Reese. unless its a total crash and burn in two years, which I dont expect to happening, I see Schoen and Daboll getting 4 years to prove. I hope those two are here for 10 more years! That will only mean good things are happening.

Isn't that what Jones is now? Giants fans aren't going to wait another year with another seat warmer while Dabool/Schoen wait for our future QB to graduate. The pressure is real, Daboll/Schoen know they have a couple seasons to get this is headed in the right direction whomever the QB is. Whatever the case with Jones, I would think they need to have their QB on the field in 2023. In regard to this OP, I don't see a scenario where the Giants would replace Jones with another placeholder at QB. I base that mostly on what QB's will likely be available.
