Phil Simms talks at length to Charlie Rose about the past Super Bowls, the 1993 Super Bowl, leadership, the many aspects to playing quarterback, as well as commentary on other QB's. There's some interesting things to be learned watching it.

I always get annoyed when forget that he is a two time super bowl winning qb. I get Hoss played in the second one but still. Simms was the highest rated qb in the NFL when he got hurt.

I found this interview interesting, and one of reasons is Charlie Rose' perspective being one of a Giants fan.
I loved the Q&A about why Phil wouldn't see open receivers at times and Phil responded that he's doesn't watch the receivers - he's watching the defense. The defense dictates where he's going with the ball.
I don't think I've ever looked at the pass game that way.
Anyone?

As long as a QB trusts his WR to run the correct routes I can agree with with perspective. I don't know how many QB operate this way but I would guess Peyton did the same. There's probably a lot more disguising than before so it's going to be more difficult for QB to play this way now.

That would be interesting to find out.
Certainly in a read system like Gilbride's it would be much more difficult but who knows? But it would clearly explain some of the throws we saw from Eli. I really wish I had heard this years ago. As Phil said, he didn't worry about his receivers because he knew where they were supposed to be. At this level, it makes total sense that Eli should be able to read the defense with the expectation that his receivers are reading it the same - therefor knowing where they needed to be/where the ball was going.

I really think that had Phil not gotten hurt in 90', we totally destroy the 9ers & Bills because we would not have played conservative O as we had to with Hoss. That game vs SF should not have even gone down to a last sec GWFG. Carthon dropped an easy TD on a trick play from Megget & only reason they got that TD from Montana to Taylor was due to Collins trying to go for the int instead of the tackle. Our D easily dominated SF all game. Shoulda won that game 20-6.

Great video. Thanks Rosie.
You can see how Simms translated nicely into the broadcast booth.
Didn’t realize he was a free agent going into Reeves first year. And it was a huge mistake cutting him after Reeves first year. I wonder who was the main culprit in all of that. Was it Young or Reeves?

Hostetler made really key plays with his scrambling ability, something phil couldn't have done. Although, barr missed a field goal in addition to carthon's drop, and mark collins totally whiffed on the marshall sack fumble of montana. That's something people forget occurred at the end of that play. The ball is right there for collins and he dives right on it at the SF 25 and just misses. We left at least 10 points on the field. I do, however, think we would have beaten the Bills by a wider margin in the SB with Simms starting.

Simms could run & scramble for yds when situation dictated, he was not an immobile statue like Eli is. With Simms at QB, BP would have opened up the playbook & we would have won that game going away. Yeah, Giants let a lot of opportunities slip thru their fingers vs SF, How Collins completely whiffed on the Montana fumble is beyond me., So if Carthon hauls in the TD, Barr is good on that FG, we win that game going away.

Yeah, Giants let a lot of opportunities slip thru their fingers vs SF, How Collins completely whiffed on the Montana fumble is beyond me., So if Carthon hauls in the TD, Barr is good on that FG, we win that game going away. I mean, we scored 3 points with Simms quarterbacking in the monday night game, so what happened to "opening up the playbook" then? And Simms was directly responsible for missing his receiver on the pass that was tipped away in the end zone with about 2 minutes left in the game. All he had to do was put some air under it and it's a TD and the Giants win 10-7. If he hits that pass, the Giants go 14-2 and San Fran goes 13-3, and it's the Giants who wind up hosting the 1991 NFCCG. The bottom line is that those things DID happen in the playoff game--the Carthon drop, the barr miss, and the collins whiff. And Hostetler made was is probably the most underrated throw in Giants history to Bavaro by scrambling right and throwing against his body to the middle of the field, connecting with Bavaro. It was a critical throw on that final drive. Simms would have been sacked on that play. Also, if you remember in the super bowl, the Giants had a golden opportunity to go up 24-19 with a first and goal at the 3 when the nose tackle Shane Conlan ran down OJ from behind with the play going away from him. The play resulted in a loss and the Giants were eventually forced to settle for the field goal. So were it not for Shane Conlan, the Giants likely would have won the super bowl by a wider margin. Hostetler probably should have tried to block Conlan, but I doubt that was part of his assignment. Plus, there's no way Simms holds onto the ball if he trips over Anderson in the end zone.

All my life I played the line ,defensive and offensive .In person watching a live game I rarely watch the QB's unless it's a pass play. Watching a game on TV I have no choice but to watch what is shown to me but I can watch a game with others and I know I watch it differently. My focus is always on the QB. How a QB drops back to pass tells me what to expect on the play.
