He's the only player I would've been happy with drafting at #2 besides Saquon. I think he'll be a stud.
Business is business. He'll be on the field eventually.

And he fumbles his start with the Jets.

I don't know if the exact nature of the dispute is common in first contracts - but it's almost like both the Jets team and Darnold know that they just can't ever develop a young QB.

This is training camp. I wouldn't read too much into this. When he faces NFL defenses week by week, then people will see if he was worth drafting or not. A good training camp day doesn't mean the Giants made the wrong move.

Didn't read the thread but Joe why are you putting a Jet on a Giant Web site. We don't have what the old board had where you can put things on a special thread of all sports or all NFL ?
I don't know Joe who cares about him ? He's a Jet. I personally hate that team and their fans and don't even want to be associated with them in any way.
But I do understand making fun of those A$$holes. Hey For the guys that wanted him instead of Barkley are you enjoying this ? Am sooo happy we got Barkley, what a break.
I guess I do understand Joe, it's fun.

I agree. Not only is he not a Giant, but Darnold's success/failure with the Jets would not guarantee his success/failure with the Giants so he really is irrelevant.

Why are we talking Jets ? On a Giants message board.

The point is at one time Darnold was the QB the Giants possibly would have wanted in the draft but the Giants went in a different direction with Saquon instead... all this shows is that had we gone with Darnold at #2 would the Giants be in a similar predicament as the Jets with contract negotiations and missing valuable training camp time.
You think the Jets would have learned their lesson with Sanchez (USC) now this with Darnold (USC) a curse? Maybe.
Good So Cal. kid but not a great way to start pro career... maybe we make a trade?

The point was here's a guy folks on the Giants board wanted to draft so badly and oh no they took Barkley instead and oh what a mistake. Meanwhile this kid thinks who the hell he is and is missing valuable time in camp over a contract dispute and hasn't played a down yet. Also: the Jets continue to be morons and don't help the situation with their new "franchise quarterback". Also I meant to post this in the NFL section so Rosie if you'd kindly move it there, Thanks.

I think Darnold is the only 1st Round pick who has not signed yet. Nice job Jets.

Why are we talking Jets ? On a Giants message board. Because there were a fair share of MB members on the old board that were big Darnold proponents. I am sure this is just the first of many that follow his career with scrutiny.

I agree the CBA has the rate set. If the Jets are allowing this contract thing to get stuck . They're morons.

In that case Darnold is setting a bad tone right off the bat.

In that case Darnold is setting a bad tone right off the bat. IMO; The Cousins fully Guaranteed contract has emboldened players and their agents. Baseball owners seem to be second guessing that decision because of more then a few bad contracts the owners are eating . The days of the long term deal for most are coming to an end. The owners have found a work around to the big money guarantees. I am not saying a select few ( the very upper tier) won't get the big money and length contracts. The rest will not, This past baseball offseason was a eye opener for players. Just my opinion.

The Jets have been looking for their future franchise quarterback for decades. They hit the lottery by moving up three spots in the draft and it actually landed them their 1st choice of quarterback. So why are they concerned about the hypothetical scenario of cutting him? Do they really see themselves cutting him during his rookie deal and not giving him every chance of becoming their franchise quarterback during his rookie contract? I know the other quarterbacks in this draft have not requested to negotiate the offset language in their deals, but common. If you really believe in this kid and you should, then stop being petty. In the unlikely chance of him being a complete bust, it's going to set you back big time regardless. So bend over and take it for your potential future franchise savior.
On a personal note. I hope this blows up in their ugly gang green faces!

The team doesn't want to set the tone on the first contract that the player is "in control" regardless how minimal the change. This happens in business all the time.

The team doesn't want to set the tone on the first contract that the player is "in control" regardless how minimal the change. This happens in business all the time. From the article that was posted in this thread: The disagreement between the Jets and Darnold's camp, led by agent Jimmy Sexton, isn't about salary. Rookie contracts are slotted, and as the No. 3 pick, Darnold will make a non-negotiable $30.25 million guaranteed, including a $20.1 million signing bonus.
But the offset language in a rookie contract is negotiable. And according to multiple reports, that's the root of the problem with Darnold. The Jets want offset language in the contract so they can recoup some of the guaranteed money in the contract if Darnold is cut and joins another team before the end of his rookie deal. Darnold and his agent do not want the offset language in the deal.
It seems like a small thing.

Ironically, if he gets cut during his rookie deal, the guys doing the negotiating won’t be around to see any offset....

Does any one know what the parameters of the contract are? Maybe he has good cause to wait.

Who cares about Darnold? Rosen was the QB for us. Darnold has nothing on Rosen. He's looking great in AZ by all accounts.
