For a few possessions, Tom Brady had to be having Super Bowl flashbacks. He dropped back to pass and saw nothing but white Giants jerseys in his face. Instead of Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora, it was Markus Golden and Lorenzo Carter. Eventually, Brady and the Patriots would find their rhythm and drop Big Blue to 2-4, but not before the future Hall of Famer was sacked three times, hit on six occasions and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. It was part of an impressive performance by the defense, continuing a recent Giants trend of pressuring the quarterback. “It’s just guys working together and flying around together and believing in each other as far as the pass rush,” Golden said. Since failing to register a sack in a season-opening loss to the Cowboys, the Giants have 16 in five games, which is tied for the sixth-most in the NFL. Getting to the quarterback was a major need after the way the past two seasons went in that category. The Giants were 30th in sacks in 2017 and 31st last year. To remedy those issues, they made changes, signing Golden and drafting defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence in the first round and outside linebacker Oshane Ximines in the third. “Well, we’ve made improvements. I think that was a big topic of conversation through training camp, how we were going to create pass rush,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “I think, if anything, we’ve shown flashes of being a good football team, and then I still think we’re inconsistent in a lot of areas, but we’re starting to create some rush. “I knew going into it that Markus Golden had that ability. It was a matter of record that he had been very disruptive the year before his injury, and he’s back and playing really hard. I knew Lorenzo Carter would be better from a year ago. Not to mention the other guys we’ve added, X-Man [Ximines] and so on. Then, I think at times we’re getting pretty decent push on the inside.” Golden has stood out the most, notching team-highs of five sacks and five tackles for losses. After producing 12.5 sacks in his second season in the league with the Cardinals, Golden posted just 2.5 sacks in 16 games the past two years, partially hampered by a torn ACL. But he has been a difference-maker so far with the Giants. Against the Patriots he had a sack and returned a Brady fumble created by a Carter sack 42 yards for a touchdown. “I’m all about working, so I worked hard this offseason. I worked in [organized team activities] and even in camp, I just worked hard,” Golden said. “When you put in the work that I was making sure I put in every day and making sure I was taking care of my body even better than I was before the injury, yes, I was confident in myself no matter what. You have to be confident in yourself, especially if you are working hard.” But what has to be most encouraging for the Giants is the variety of the pass rush. Eleven different players have at least half of a sack, and of those 11, six are in their first or second season in the league. Lawrence and Ximines have combined for four sacks and five tackles for loss, the duo improving by the week, giving the Giants reason for hope in the future as well as the present. “Big Dex is an animal out there, you see it on film,” Golden said. “He really stood out on film as far as running to the ball, pushing the pocket and flying around. I’m excited for all of them, but Big Dex is making a big jump and you can see it when you turn on film.” nypost.com/2019/10/12/giants-are-wiping-away-long-standing-defensive-concern/

Brady ran for 2 TDs for the first time in his career behind 3 backup Olinemen right into the heart of the D. The Ds that defeated Brady would have had 252 sacks v the Oline NE fielded Thursday night. I truly despise attempts at silver linings. Close, hard fought defeat? Okay maybe. We got our asses handed to us. 35-14, they stalled at the 15 on 4th down early, missed and passed on 2 other FGs due to wind. They kneeled down at the 3 to end the game. We gave up over 400 yards of offense with the wind as a 12th defender. This coming off allowing Kirk Cousins who was 31st in passing to get on track. This D has shown 1 thing: nothing. Anyone who wants to praise what this D has done or is encouraged by it is a product of low expectations. We are nowhere near where we need to be....if where we want to be is good. That’s what I want. Note to all: Dexter Lawrence is good does NOT equal this D being good, or improving, or anything beyond him being good. He’s singular. The D is comprised of 11 people who OCs will find and pick on the weak links.

At the top of the league in sacks, at the bottom of the league in yardage and points. When the defense isn't sacking QB's, they're giving up 15-20 yd plays.

Until there is consistent play from the whole roster it will be like this the OL and pass rush are improved, LB and secondary still need some work probably getting some younger guys reps in the slot and on the outside in place of JJ would be wise see what we have.

There is a process that will take place and as I watched over 50 years of football it was something I witnessed as a fan. There are some good pieces in place with some encouraging signs and due to years of neglect by our former GM what we see is more exciting than the crap we had. Maybe wishful thinking but that's all we have for the moment. Low expectations? I don't think so. Many here have watched some of the great D's of old. If you want to be the glass is half empty than so be it.

Seems some think this team was a few players away from being a good team, for god sakes they were the worst team in the league # 32. in 2014 when they blew a 20 point lead to the Jags they took the crown as worst and 2016 didn't fix it they were even worse in 2017, this is a long term deal repairing this broken team.

I would just like to point out that Olivier Vernon has 1 sack so far this year. He has been invisible for the Browns. And in case you were wondering, no he hasnt been injured. He started every game.
I would also like to point out that every member of our starting defense, as well as 4 backups, has more tackles then Vernon thus far into the season.
Give DG some credit, the Vernon for Zeitler trade has been one of the most lopsided trades the Giants have made in a LONG time.

As much as people bitched about the OBJ part of the trade, that is also looking pretty good on our side. Peppers has been playing really well the last few games, Dex is getting better and better, and Baker seems to be blossoming.

The same thing I do as a Yankee fan..... Talk about big games? Have discussions where we analyze this team like a pro team rather than a minor league baseball team? Discuss coaching decisions? Etc. The thing I realize at all times is there are 32 teams. We are not a test tube football team in a lab. We can talk about specific players showing promise, that's fine as long as it is relative to specific players. All teams have some young players showing promise. We are the Scranton Yankees waiting for the NY Yankees to call up a few guys. We need the entire team as a group to be good. And the future does not hold all positives. It's not going to be A, B, C, D going well there will also be A, B, C, D going wrong i.e. losing players, injuries, guys not panning out or falling off. This team is weak at OT, we don't yet know about the QB a lot of young guys are playing well, Kyle Allen is 4-0, some 4th stringer just won for the Steelers, Minshew has put up better stats than Jones, he was a round 6. We need to have gotten that pick right and he's shown ability. We need to start seeing results because other young QBs are showing results. This next stretch is big for him. 10 days to prepare for a bad Arizona D is a spot where you have to expect him to play well. His best performance was in Game 1, each game in terms of stats has been worse since then. It's time to play well and get a W Sunday. Why? Because other kid QBs are doing it, so do it.

Baker wasn’t part of the OBJ trade. Peppers, Dex and Xman

Lmao @ that article. No one is saying this is a great D and no one is praising them. If you listen you will hear people saying this D is improving. It seems you want instant results. That is not how the process works just to inform you. That's the thing. I don't agree it is improving. It's had 1 good performance, against the Skins with Keenum on a bad foot and Haskins with no reps. In that game Keenum missed 2 70+ yard TD passes on unforced misfires, WR was wide open.

What in the world are you going to do once we are really, really good...Tear off salamander's legs? Minshew was terrible yesterday. Guess he is regressing....

Murray - 1,664 Yards, 7 TDs, 4 INTs 87.6 rating 238 yards rushing 2 TDs
Allen - 901 Yards, 7 TDs, 0 INTs, 106.6 rating
Jones - 821 Yards, 5 TDs, 6 INTs, 74.1 rating
Rudolph - 646 Yards, 7 TDs, 2 INTs 102.5 rating (4th stringer just played with him in concession protocol and beat Chargers)
For perspective Jones is clearly running last statistically here. And the turnovers stand out compared to other guys who are out there learning as well.

Peppers, Dex and Xman You're right, sorry about that. Replace him with Xman who is also contributing nicely, and we're still doing quite well on the trade.

6 games into the season. smh Mouthbreather take .... I’m not making judgments this year regardless and as I’ve saud Kknes has shown ability. However it was 1 game when talking heads began making apologies. After 4 he doesn’t stand out in comparison to QBs with similar experience and he’s turning it over far more than all of them,

You have Murray rush stats but not Jones, WTF?............. NOT too BIAS. Murray stats are for 6 games I believe , Jones has played 4Jones has 86 yards and 2 TDs rushing. I noted Murray because he’s on a high rushing pace for a QB.

That's correct and exactly what RF used to do when posting on behalf of the Giants, which I don't recall members taking issue with. So we can post everything in an Article but the lass sentence and that's ok? Its really not. The point is you should be encouraging people to use the link to the site where the content originated to read more. If you provide all or most of the article, that wont happen.
