In 2018 they could have traded back to middle of Round 1, taken Jackson @qb, and gotten a low Round 1/high Round 2 pick and taken Chubb @ RB.
Jackson + Chubb versus Jones + Barkley?
Thoughts

Thoughts Jackson fell to 32, this is very much Monday Morning quarterbacking. There were serious concerns about Jackson as a passer. I still question if he can sustain this style for more than a couple years. His legs are off the charts. Theyve created an offense around that which is dynamic. However his legs are creating man throws which he’s able to make. As a traditional dropback passer he’d struggle mightily. I think they are going to win the SB this year having said that.

Yea but Monday Quarterbacking is always easy to look at and cherry pick things that look really good. In 2018 getting Saquon and Hernandez looked like a steal and I'm still very happy we got both.
Lamar Jackson is a lightning bolt that is lighting up the NFL. There were 4 QB's picked in the 1st rd ahead of him. Jackson was the 32 pick which means with all things being equal everyone is shaking their heads that they could have had him. Only the Ravens gamboled to move up and grab him. Cudos to them they have built their offense around his skills.
Greg Roman the OC has made this work. You think he's going to get interviews as a HC this up coming season ?

Thoughts I was thinking the same thing but about D Watson a few years ago, it all looks good in hind sight for today but careers need to play out to really know.

This coaching staff would not have known what to do with Lamar. Look at last year's playoff game. That's how he would have been with the Giants. He would have been a colossal bust IMO.
I give Harbaugh a shit-ton of credit for what Baltimore is doing. Kudos to them.

Your right imagine what is said in private in the offices of the Chicago Bears ? They traded a handful of high picks to move up to the 2nd pick, and took Tribisky. They bypassed both Mahomes and Watson. Whew !

As long as he can avoid the big hits and stay healthy he'll be an MVP candidate this year and beyond. But this is all hindsight. I don't think he was being looked at as as first round QB prospect by very many. Usually when teams trade up into the first round like they did for him it's because they get that extra year on the contract.

You guys have to slow down on the Jackson hype train like he is a HOFer already. Media does too. It's getting out of hand. He is having a great year so far. I'll admit his passes are looking better, his TD INT ratio is great, but the thing is, he only had 169 yards throwing yesterday. It's still the legs with him. Sometimes it takes a bit to get figured out, or an injury happens.
I love watching what he is doing though very exciting. Ravens did a great job so far developing and using him to his strengths, something I can almost guarantee the Giants would struggle with.

Lamar Jackson has more rushing yards than Saquon. I knew he could play QB, but not at this level in the passing game. Even Kyler Murray has found his stride.

I put forth the idea of trading back for Nelson and using the extra picks to trade back up into the first for Jackson at the time.
Just sayin..

No GM made the move until 32 so you could question all of them many already had their QB, and others were in process of getting them. that leaves the screw ups. if our guys are part of that group, then why are they here?

It is so easy to be a Savant Arm Chair GM . You can can display your genius months , years after the pick. There is only one problem with that profession. It never pays enough to get out of your parents basement.

I mean who really thought Lamar was going to be as good as he's been. He's throwing the ball well, he's running it well. I think his coaches have done a really, really good job setting him up for success. I reallyt believe thats been a big part of his success, plus I hear he's got great work ethic. If he went to a coaching staff that couldn't set him up the way the Ravens have it could be and probably would be an entirely different discussion. All things considered, he's exceeded what most thought he'd be capable of at this point.
We'll see if it continues, but so far so good. Also, to answer you question no. I don't believe this coaching staff and his style would synergize real well.
If barkley can continue playing at the level he did last season, you can make an argument either way, but as much as I love Barkley and even wanted the pick in hindsight I don't think it was the best decision to be honest. Hindsights always 20/20

Barkley was the pick if you did not need a QB, (which we did need) both other NY teams took a QB and Mara and Gettleman thought we did not need one. Now im thinking if Barkley will even be resigned when its time.

You don't get to go back and simply pick the best player you would have liked, you could not have done that back then. This same thing could be done for every team in every draft.
I was one of the only people on the message board that liked Jackson back then and he was the QB I wanted...but I wanted him in round two after taking Barkley. Barkley, Beckham and Jackson would have been very exciting. I think Jones will be better though in the long run.

Hell NO. We should have moved up and picked Patrick Mahomes instead of Evan Engram in 2017. And dumped Eli in 2018.
Then picked Taven Bryan or Isaiah Wynn in 2018.

I remember rolling my eyes thinking “this ain’t the ACC”. Credit where it’s due, man. That would have been some fun viewing. FWIW, I wanted a trade back for Nelson, Chubb, and Darius Leonard if I recall. 😁

What about the posters that said Barkley was the safe choice and that we needed a QB? That was not hindsight. Which of those QBs has proven to be a better pick than Jones? And while we're at it, how about Beckham? Didn't you posit that he was guaranteed to have a much, much better season now that he's got a real QB throwing to him? Abwahahhahahahahahahhahahha! That one never gets old!

Honestly 27 or 28 teams should jump in a time machine and draft Jackson. People are saying he is likely to get injured, but at the point is Jones any less likely to get hurt behind operation jailbreak? I finally have come around to the idea that SB at 2 was a mistake though. Honestly, they should have drafted Quentin Nelson if we are playing the hindsight game. A guard too high at 2? That kid is going to be a perennial all pro and hall of famer.

I finally have come around to the idea that SB at 2 was a mistake though. Honestly, they should have drafted Quentin Nelson if we are playing the hindsight game. A guard too high at 2? That kid is going to be a perennial all pro and hall of famer. If they wanted Nelson trading back was the play. Same as if they wanted Barkley. A Pro Bowl OG or RB is nice, but that pick had tremendous trade value because of the QBs on the board. The idea of losing any single player compared to the bounty to be gained in a trade to move back a few slots simply did not add up. If we dropped to the 5-6-7 range from 2 we’d have picked up an additional 1 or multiple 2s and still come away with Nelson, Barkley, Chubb, or McGlinchey. Our advantage on draft day 2018 was we needed everything and held a pick that had tremendous value. My problem with DG defenders is they point to him needing time because Reese left this empty roster that had to be built. Well Gettleman inherited # 2 overall from Reese. That wasn’t genius GM work having that pick, it came with the job. And that pick could have been turned into draft assets to address multiple needs, which is exactly what was needed. His golden jacket speech was ridiculous. You don’t look to draft a hall of famer on draft day. Far too many good prospects bust to think anyone is a mortal lock for such a career. You hope to draft good players and have them reach greatness. If you go listen to DGs media sessions from the 2018 offseason and draft and see where we are now I don’t see how the guy gets retained if accountability is in play, which it’s not under Mara. He hasn’t come close to his mission statement. Leonard Williams was an egregious panic move. Another big body for DG to use fancy words about and pretend a plan is in place. His Oline stinks. His pass rush stinks. And “big guys” are his thing. Jones TD passes are the lipstick on the pig right now. If we ignore everything happening in this franchise except Jones TD: INT ratio things look good. If we look at everything except Jones TD:INT ratio from his fumbles, to our 2-9 record, to our inability to block, to Saquon’s regression, to our poor blocking, to our defensive inadequacies everywhere, to our K missing XPs, to our coach repeating the words fight and battle until the media is bored to tears or begins laughing out loud, things are at an expansion level here. Giants have the wrong guys in charge.
