Ok. So one or two coaches have been named. That's an incredibly small sample to be basing a philosophy on (not you in particular). And I never said eliminate the possibility of hiring an NCAA HC... all I have done is question its success rate. Thus far it has proven to be very unsuccessful. Ok fair enough. Was speaking to the posters that feel its an automatic death sentence to hire from the college ranks. Me personally I wouldn't mind the hire of Rivera or a defensive minded HC excluding Rex Ryan and Romeo Crenell. I'm kind of somewhere in between. Give me a defensive minded coach, with some NFL coaching experience (not necessarily HC) but who is young and innovative. I'm kind of tired of being a dinosaur franchise, with dinosaur owners with dinosaur GMs, with predictable and/or dinosaur coaching staffs....

Gettleman would probably want to go after Rivera, but after the disaster of the last 2 seasons DG probably doesn't have the credibility to convince Mara to go after somebody he worked with in Carolina. Truthfully, Gettleman's should be on his way out if the Giants don't show some real improvement in 2020.

How is he a better option than McCarthy? Rivera had 3 winning seasons out of 9, 3-4 record in the postseason including 2 first round exits. If McCarthy should've won more, what does that say about Rivera who always lost? I dunno. McCarthy always seemed like an OC who had the best QB in his prime in a historically weak division during his tenure. Their defense was also perennial underachievers. Eli won more SB’s than Rodgers during that time and no one is going to say ghat Eli was better than Rodgers. I like a defensive-minded HC. I always have. Hire Rivera to fix this D with the decent roster we already have and hire a good OC to develop Jones and run the offense. Riverboat May be aggressive, be he won’t be involved in the overall offense much. I question why McCarthy didn’t get an offer after leaving GB. He is a good choice as OC, but only if Rivera wants him. He seemed to get the best out of Rodgers and their O, year after year. He threw too much his entire GB career in my estimation, but he was an above-average OC/QB coach. That seems like a nice scenario to me. Two proven winners in the NFL and a HC who is on the same page as our GM. Mara should be on the phone with DG tonight. We need a complete purge of our coaching staff. That much is painfully obvious.

If Shurmur gets fired tomorrow, would the Panthers message boards be pining for his hiring to be their HC next year? Shurmur will never get another HC job after this one, yet some want to keep him. Go figure

Giants need a young coach that will grow with the team. Like a Mike Norvell( Memphis). Lincoln Riley ( Oklahoma), Rulhle ( Baylor) I don't understand the reasoning behind your position. College coaches with no NFL HC experience often never pan out as an NFL HC. Hot shot NFL assistants rarely pan out either. The fact is that it’s really hard to find a 10 year NFL coach

Agreed that Rivera works here for the reason you stated in that he is more a CEO type that manages the game.Wouldnt mind of he brought Turner with him as Norv reinvented himself at this stop with his scheme looking a lot like the modern WCO/air raid hybrid we and other teams run and how he used McCaffrey, sonic think Hones would be fine To me his biggest selling point is he has a lot of experience with the 3/4 so we wouldn't have to re gut the front 7

Here is what I would like to know: Who is the last coach to put up 10 wins or less in 2 seasons who wasn’t fired?

Shanahan’s team showed a huge improvement at the end of 2017, and then he lost his franchise QB in 2018. Giving him another year seemed reasonable. Shurmur has showed nothing over 2 years - no improvement at all ... just the same mistakes over and over.

I consider Shanahan an exception as they dealt for jimmy g midway through year 1 and won once he entered. Then they lost him at the start of last year and had to play an UDFA all year.

Both were competent OCs and incompetent HCs. Both got 2 shots in less than ideal circumstances, but never gave you a reason to believe.

Just heard Ron Rivera's press conference. There is no way that Mara/Gettleman are not hiring this guy as our next HC (unless he decides that he wants to go elsewhere).

Interesting discussion on Golic and Wingo this morning. They mentioned Ron Rivera as a possibility in Dallas. They said that Ron Rivera if he goes to Dallas would lose the broader powers he had in Carolina as Jerry Jones would be overcontrolling and possibly hinder him from being the best coach he could be. Now I think Rivera is a better coach than Garrett is but with Jerry Jones limiting Rivera's powers and Garrett free from his shackles that he was forced to operate under, I wonder what trajectories their careers will take in the future. I am not a Garrett fan but if Mara gets him (because he's Mara), we might at least get a Garrett 2.0. Or w/e. Maybe Ron gets his first Super Bowl ring. Who knows.

Interesting to hear the Redskins as one team being thrown around as a possible destination for Ron Rivera. I think Ron was a great coach Carolina, he was after all 2 time NFL Coach of the Year and it would definitely suck if he was hired as the Redskins HC.

Perry Fewell our old DC is the new interim HC. How ironic would it be if we hire Ron Rivera and Perry Fewell becomes the HC of the Panthers. Might actually be a better HC than DC IMO, I think DC who go on to become a HC have better success than OC who go on to become a HC. I feel like that for some reason when OC become HC they want to do micromanage everything on the team and still have offensive play-calling duties which never turns out well. We rarely see OC who had a top-5 offense go on as a HC and still have a top-5 offense just doesn't happen.

Ehh We also see way more OCs get coaching gigs and often they are hired to fix terminally bad offenses/attempt to rescue hopelessly bad qbs. Like anything else the good coaches allow their OCs to call plays for the most part. Fewer defensive guys get hired because of this, and that's also because their rep was well earned that they end up wanting and having horrifically ultra conservative offenses that can't compete in any game that's not a very low scoring type game Seems the new age DCs have learned that in the modern NFL you have to be aggressive on offense a d score as quickly and as much as possible so that the defense can do their thing. McDermott is an example(who learned under Rivera, who also evolved into an aggressive minded coach)

It wouldn't take long for him to be ruined by Snyder like every other coach he's brought in. Or did you mean it would suck FOR HIM?
