He's Canadian, he's the only 'centre' you need......... Well played CDN. Glad to see you've made your way over here.

Halapio looks like hes gunna be the back up center and maybe even push to be the starter.

From what I've been hearing Halapio is ahead of Jones at this point Yes, I have read that in several places over the past few weeks. If it is Jones, then we go with a guy who supplanted a 2nd round pick with hard work and determination. If it is Halapaio, then we get a guy even better than that and we've got Jones in reserve. That all sounds like progress to me.

I wonder if we could teach one of them to long snap. That could free up a slot.

Didn't realize they signed so many former team captains

Didn't realize they signed so many former team captains After reading the article, I'm cautiously optimistic about our OL play. Brown, Scott, Halapio, Greco, Howell, and Gates all seem intriguing. I'd love to hear some of these guys unexpectedly push for a starting role in training camp.

I think Wheeler ends up starting at RT this year. Maybe not in September, but he will eventually beat out Flowers.

You're welcome. I'm excited about the new line overall. The line reached rock bottom the past 3 seasons. Nowhere to go but up.

It is my understanding that Jones and Halapio are the top two options for the starting center spot. Seems several in the organization have high hopes for Halapio.

Also another rookie who, if they make the roster or PS, has center experience from college

Does anyone know how Halapio graded out run and pass blocking. My understanding based on what I've read is that Jones was better at pass blocking than run blocking. If Halapio is the reverse and he wins out, it will be another indication of the shift in philosophy Shurmer/Gettleman bring.
On another note, I don't remember who said it but someone pointed out that we have effectively upgraded every position on our line compared to last year. LT, LG, C and RG are obvious but even RT has been upgraded as it would be pretty hard for Flowers not to be better than Hart.

1LOVED Jones and his story coming from the CFL, but if Halapio winds up as the better Center or Centre as our friends up north call it, we all win as Giants fans.
I forget who said it, but Jones beat out a 2nd round pick with hard work and Halapio may beat Jones with Hard work. We have a few hard hat and lunch pail guys out here on the line.... And as a hard hat and lunch pail union carpenter like myself, i LOVE it!!!

This quote says it all "In the end, the Giants will have to decide if they want to prioritize the run game or pass game at the center position. Neither Jones nor Halapio is perfect, but both players offer one standout trait they can apply to the revamped Giants offensive line." I think their decision will reflect what they are prioritizing. But I'm also glad to see good competition along the Oline.

If you judge purely by the Pro Football Focus data, which should really be used as part of the equation and not the whole answer, Jones is not only the far more experienced center but also graded out in 2017 as the better player.
Jones had a 63.9 overall score from PFF, 18th among centers. His pass blocking score of 83.2 was third among centers, and his pass-blocking efficiency of 98.7 was also third at the position. His run-blocking grade, though, was a pedestrian 47.9. That was 23rd among qualifying centers.
Halapio’s 44.0 PFF grade was 52nd among guards, with a run-blocking grade of 38.9 and a pass-blocking score of 54.2.
I believe, however, we should be inclined to trust the evaluation of someone like Shurmur who has played the position and coached offense in the NFL for a long time over an analytical web site’s numbers.

But it would not surprise anyone if Jones wont eh battle in the end. Preseason will be a battle to watch for.

Halapio has gotten every single 1st team rep at Center.
Brett Jones will not even make the 53 man roster. $2.9 million in cap savings if he's cut.

Coach Pat Shurmur told us not to read into the fact that Halapio took all the first-team reps during mandatory mini-camp. It is, however, hard to ignore that it looks for all the world like Halapio is the starter. He has, through five training camp practices, taken every starting rep.https://www.bigblueview.com/2018/7/31/17629976/ny-giants-training-camp-jon-halapio-brett-jones-starting-center But I dont think Jones gets cut. The Giants are desperate for good OLmen. Not only starters of course but depth.
