That's life as a professional athlete. One minute you're on top of the world, the next you're trying to figure out what to do for income. Unfortunately Nicks has to figure out what career he's going to be in. Because as a professional athlete that is all but gone for him. Great player, we don't win a Championship in 2011 without him.

maybe he can still work for the organization....it has worked for Charles Way the past twenty-five years. One thing about this ownership is they are loyal to past players. Once a Giant always a Giant.

Hakeem Nicks career earnings: $6.6 million.
If he was wise with his money he should be set for life.
Don't feel sorry for him about money.

Very sad how these guys blow it.
All they have to do is invest in S&P equity index fund.

I hope it works out for Nicks. It was sad seeing him get hurt just when he was starting to break out.

Most people end up broke after their careers end regardless of the line of work. A lot of these athletes buy multi million dollar homes that cost a fortune annually to keep up. They also spend a lot of their money on things that depreciate the moment you get them (expensive cars and jewelry). Those are just some examples of the endless amount of financial mistakes that people in their situation make. One important thing that I feel that should do is learn to say no to family members seeking handouts. I have a cousin that was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Lions and then ended up being signed by the Cardinals (Chris Jones out of Nebraska). He is always being asked for something by various family members.

I will disagree with you here ,the assumption is all NFL players make big money and that's not true . Many players have taken what little they have earned from the NFL and gone on to have nice lives . I actually know a gentleman who was Mr Irrelevant in the 80's and only played three years ,got hurt the first and spent year 1 and 2 on IR was traded to the Raiders and was cut before the end of the season. He took his three years and bought his home a very nice one which has only grown in value and other money he invested but he still had to work a normal 9-5 job to live ......he never blew it . You bring up a good point. Isn't the average NFL career like 3.5 years? I think it is safe to say that most of them are starting new careers by the time regular people are starting their first career.

I seem to recall that 70% or so of NFL players are broke a few years after retirement.
So 30% are not.
Whether 70% counts as "most" is up for debate.
Hopefully, Nicks is not broke. He earned $6.6 million in his career. That's 66 years of work for someone making $100k/year. 132 years making $50k.
Not too shabby.

A lot of it could depend on his medical bills. That is where a lot of them get killed.

Uncle Sam takes half.
Agent takes his cut.
6.6 ends up to be about 3.
Hope he makes the xfl. I got nothing bad to say about him and wish him nothing but the best.

I’m sure he did ok while playing. But after taxes and the agents cut there is nowhere near left what people think. Most of the inflation in player salaries is due to the agents and their fees.
Nicks is a good example of why players are smart to get what they can while they can...and to manage health to the extent possible.

Jesse Palmer is the most successful football player who never made it IMO... define ........made it? I think Terry Crews is doing pretty well. .................... his net is about 20 million. Palmer has a good job as a football announcer/analyst during the season and has his own variety news TV show which he produces on channel 5 in Houston 5 nights a week, he's a pretty successful young man but I don't think Palmer is making as much as your guy...

Well then I would like to see that link? Look make no mistake there are players who mishandle their money but 70% is BS. Sorry, I misquoted.
It was 80% of NFL players go broke after retirement.

I am pulling for him to make it in the XFL. Realistically no one is going to sign a 31 year old receiver with a history of leg problems to the NFL even if he makes a splash in the other league.

He "made" it.
Played 13 seasons.
Pro Bowl (1975) First-team All-Pro (1974) Second-team All-Pro (1975) 2× First-team All-NFC (1974, 1975) 2× Second-team All-NFC (1970, 1973) NFL All-Rookie team (1969)
