Victor was smart in that he pushed for more upfront guaranteed money by agreeing to a contract less than some thought he could get. Worked out fine for him. He did. Although judging from the numbers that were being thrown around here at the time folks clearly had no idea what his actual market value was. As I recall he signed for market. I don't recall thinking there was any meaningful discount but the fact that he got much of it guaranteed was certainly a huge benefit to him. I think the speculation over Victor value was in regard to paying him as #1 WR or great slot WR.

The average pro-football lifespan is like 3.5 years. Planning should start before one signs his 1st contract.. I think there was a RB a few years ago for the Redskins who was still driving a 10 yr old car well into his 4th year or so....smart dude .. Kurt Cousins the QB and ,even with his new contract in Minn he still has that van. And a 2nd job

Cruz needs to get in on some of that action. I would definitely watch. Maybe get Webb or Lauletta to be the QB.
They can be called the "NY Has beens"

Nicks was a great Giant and is still only 31, hopefully he can overcome his past injuries-it would be great to see him playing again.

I will disagree with you here ,the assumption is all NFL players make big money and that's not true . Many players have taken what little they have earned from the NFL and gone on to have nice lives . I actually know a gentleman who was Mr Irrelevant in the 80's and only played three years ,got hurt the first and spent year 1 and 2 on IR was traded to the Raiders and was cut before the end of the season. He took his three years and bought his home a very nice one which has only grown in value and other money he invested but he still had to work a normal 9-5 job to live ......he never blew it . I seem to recall that 70% or so of NFL players are broke a few years after retirement.
So 30% are not.
Whether 70% counts as "most" is up for debate.
Hopefully, Nicks is not broke. He earned $6.6 million in his career. That's 66 years of work for someone making $100k/year. 132 years making $50k.
Not too shabby.
Not exactly because the tax ramifications are much different in those different scenarios.

Another career destroyed by this team's medical staff. I hope he does well Well, he broke his foot in May 2012 and then was playing in Sept. But the play that basically "ended" his career was the long sideline catch against Tampa in week 2 where he hurt his knee. Was never the same after that.

I feel zero pity for any pro athlete that is now broke or "only" has a mil or two left in the bank after making millions playing in the NFL. Best majority of us normal working job folks will never make $1 million in our lives & I'm supposed to feel "sorry" for a guy who has just $1 mil in the bank? I wonder, do they worry or feel sorry for those of us working 40hr a week folks? Highly doubt it. Hater comments in 1...2..

Hakeem Nicks career earnings: $6.6 million. If he was wise with his money he should be set for life. Don't feel sorry for him about money. Dude, subtract for taxes and his house Poor guy got fleeced The Giants Giants fleeced. Another bad draft pick by Reese. I like Nicks and all 2 1000 yards seasons and about 25 career TDs is bad for a 1st round pick. 6.6 million in a few years of work is unbelievable. I remember hearing a story where it was controversial when Sam Huff left the Giants for a $10,000 raise.

There might be some others out there that are better at the tax aspect of this but at 6.6 million easily take at least a third in taxes ,then your agent 10% and maybe a Lawyer and a investment person it adds up quick. I realize 2 million take home is a lot of money to many of us and would keep us happy for a while but in this day and age I can see it going fast with the cost of homes and things these days. ' I realize 2 million take home is a lot of money to many of us and would keep us happy for a while but in this day and age I can see it going fast with the cost of homes and things these days."
$2 mil would keep you happy 'for a while"? Wow, you must be a big time spender if you can't make $2 mil last you your lifetime. And if that's the case, you deserve to go broke Ever heard of "living within your means"?

Once people know you got 2 mil its going to go one way or another.
