Hello those (giantlegacy is the only one I remember - apologies to the others) worried that the absence of OBJ will hamstring our offense: just wondering if you believe any of the WRs we have on the roster are showing enough so far to allay your fears? It seemed to me in the last 4 games of last year that Latimer was giving defenses enough to think about to keep the safties honest and (based on highlights only because I'm in Senegal) it seems to be continuing into practice and preseason games this year. The WRs, as a unit, seem to be doing ok. I'm saying this based on what I've read of practices as well as the highlights of the preseason games. What do you guys think (with full acknowledgment it is hard to say at this point)?
On another note, run blocking seems much better so far as free defenders getting into the the backfield. Smith seems to be a proficient runner but may have played himself off the roster with his ball security issues.
Last note: how did some of the projects like Adams, Slade, Conrad, Connelly, Carlock and Love look?

We are using our starting OLine vs backup Dlines. We better be able to give the QB time to find those WRs and create running lanes.
Id say Shepard, Latimore, Russell, TJ Jones, Fowler make the team with Tate coming back week 5. Not seeing enough of White out there.

The recievers we have in camp all seem to be catching the ball very well.

And yet, we still try to figure out who is good and who isn't (as you did with your last sentence). Thoughts on keeping defenses honest when it counts?

We have yet to see the offense with any of Barkley, Engram or S Shepard on the field, arguably our 3 most dangerous players. I think we'll be fine on the offensive side of the ball. I'm still concerned about the D. At least we were able to get some pressure last night against the 2nd/3rd string O Line of the Bears.

Nah - he knows the topic is just whether or not Latimer and others is showing more than expected and enough to keep teams honest. Not replacing OBJ, obviously, but doing enough for the offense to function without having to go 12 personnel all the time.

If they can hit a solid #1 newt draft they will not only survive they will thrive, and maybe look like the smartest guys in the room landing Barkely the QB and a WR all on rookie contracts wow. That would change the narrative big time and there would be a lot of crow eating.

We have young hungry receivers. But I want to see these kids playing against starting cornerbacks.. The difference between a starter and a backup is huge in the NFL.

I said in the Jones thread that Jones is making a very pedestrian group of wideouts very productive, but let's face it these guys are not getting a lot of separation otherwise...so my thoughts
Latimer Why has he not put it all together in 5 years? Some guys have all the skill sets to he a legit number 1,which he has,but it never happens I don't know enough about his past in Denver, but you would have thought having D Thomas in his.prime opposite him he could have feasted on single coverage. Maybe what he is is what we saw.last year, some flashes, hamstring, more flashes,a groin... This ie probably his last year here anyway,if he is still like this they will move on,if he has a late bloomer breakout season some dumb team will give him 40 million plus,we have 2 guys making 40 million a year..
Slayton... He has a chance..... to me the low end bar for dynamic playmaker is Ted Gimn Jr,just enough to pull a safety back and have to account for him, which is what would make this offense explosive with Barkley Tate Engram and Sheppard doing their things in the 20 yard box at will. This is TBD,though what is in his favor is that out of all these non starting receivers he has the most chemistry with Jones (I'm thinking post Eli future )as.they have been basicly teamed up ever since rookie camp.
Sleeper guy Alonzo Russell He has shown some incredible speed and has size as well, would love to see him get some more meaningful burn but he is one of the few recievers that is getting separation in his routes and has made every opportunity count. We dont have a guy with this kind of skillsets.
Taking Tate and Sheppard out of the equation The rest of these guys are a fungible group of slot/possession type guys that can't get a lot of separation against backups that Jones is making look much better than they are with his ball placement, throwing into tight spots, ect.
Engram is Engram,he can be dynamic if used correctly and innovatively, which we saw the last 2 weeks of the season...to.make him more dynamic personality we really need to feature a 2nd TE in the passing game and make tbe 12 formation our base. I still think Ellison has a Jake Ballard type skillset that needs to be utilized. Dissapointed we haven't seen more from Conrad in the games even though he legit looks the part.
Of course we still have the unicorn,Barkley, and supposedly he has been running some of Beckham's route tree(how frightening would that be),but still he can't be the entire offense, him running that kind of route should only be used sparingly to shock an opponent..
Best case scenario Slayton and/or Russell show enough where we only take a playmaker if it's an obvious BPA early (remember, everyone wants o line in the first round,Getty has never taken anyone earlier than 3 except when Hernandez was the obvious BPA and been successful, while taking Mccaffery and Barkley top 10 2 out of the past 3 years in the top 10 and drafted Benjamin in the 1st).
Worst case scenario With the 13th overall pick...the NY Giants select, CeeDee Lamb(or someone,Jeudy is a top 7 pick right now and unrealistic)and he is our finishing piece to the offense (after buying the top RT in FA)

Not replacing OBJ, obviously, but doing enough for the offense to function without having to go 12 personnel all the time. Some times a committee type of situation works as well. Not buy any fault of OBJ but the Giants were locked into trying to get the ball to him 10-12 times a game can't play that way, has to be organic when he is open he gets not just forcing the issue, think this will force them to be more diversified.I think Saquon will be running deeper routes also.

Jones has to play special teams, and he scares me when he's on punt return.

We forget he looked explosive in his rookie year at times, then showed it again at times in 2013 All of a sudden his routes started getting sloppy and he wasnt getting separation anymore and he was basicly shot by his final year. What I mean by pedestrian is guys that can be effective bottom of roster guys or guys with an elite qb can be productive, which you need because these are the types of players in a multi WR set that should exploit nickle and dime corners, but if these guys are your starters you are in serious trouble.

I do not think that is the case. They look better than The Bardens and Randles we have had in the past. I am not observing that, I am seeing guys that are running good routes , getting separation ( well as best as you can get in the NFL) showing speed . The best is, they are going up and getting the ball. What more can you ask for in recievers? Me: I am more concerned with our RB depth than our WRs.

TJ Jones... very good last two games and a good camp. Pro experience. Kid has the chance to have a lighting in a bottle type pf season. I like him I think he's going to be the odd man out. You have Sterling Shepard, Tate as automatics, then toss up with Fowler, Latimer and Jones. Russell Shepard I think is a lock because he plays a very good special teams. Jones has to play special teams, and he scares me when he's on punt return. To me Jones is basicly a slot guy .We have better versions of him with Tate and Sheppard And one other thing He never really did anything special in Detroit where he could have exploited teams number 3 and 4 corners.. He doesn't strike me as someone who right now at best is a possible 4 game placeholder while Tate is out.

Just enough NFL separation against backups where Jones has made them productive. Like I said this is good enough for back end of depth chart recievers as if all works out as planned because they would be facing these same backups in multiple recievers sets Of course if we are rolling out 11 and 10 formations a lot it also means something catastrophic has happened to our TE group and let's not think about this

I said in the Jones thread that Jones is making a very pedestrian group of wideouts very productive, but let's face it these guys are not getting a lot of separation otherwise...so my thoughts Latimer Why has he not put it all together in 5 years? Worst case scenario With the 13th overall pick...the NY Giants select, CeeDee Lamb(or someone,Jeudy is a top 7 pick right now and unrealistic)and he is our finishing piece to the offense (after buying the top RT in FA) Great post I want to see Russel get a chance with the Ones or two's he had a real good special teams play yesterday to. also Russell is all overvthe field on STs making things happen. Almost created turnover with his speed and ability to knock ball loose but the bears player got a lucky bounce and got the ball back Also did you see his speed catching the Dback who had the INT near goal line think he was tsking it to the house. Russell was lightening fast closing a big gap to bring him down

He legit looks like he has taken the next step. Hight/Speed guy that needed a little seasoning
