I'm thinking he might not have experience at safety and a full offseason to cross train would be more beneficial,Not to mention where is he going to play, seems they are giving Love his shot at FS... My question is why are you so quick to call him a liability while you seem to give the rest of the young guys more time? We saw him play the slot for what,6 games?

Well, Allen Robinson was running free all game long so .... Go re-watch the game. Robinson did not have a ball thrown at him when Backer was covering. Yea it was actually Beal on the big reception that got called back. They got him matched up on Ballentine and all hell broke loose. these are things that need to happen for this kid to grow into the slot, I like him better out side length and speed. Love has expeience there he can play the same role as Antrell did slot and safety.

All good sings. "Perhaps the player who needed a good game the most, DeAndre Baker easily had his best game of the season with an 83.5 overall grade. Baker was targeted twice and didn’t allow a reception. He played 75% of the snaps
David Mayo was the best player for the Giants yesterday with an elite 92.4 grade. He had 8 tackles, including 6 run stops, and a pass breakup
Julian Love had an 81.2 overall grade, playing 67% of snaps in his first game with a heavy workload. He wasn’t targeted in the game and had an interception on an under-thrown pass"

I’ve chosen to ignore all the kid corners, treat this as learning ground and see what they are in 2020. Giants should be in the corner market in FA.

I would’ve waited for next weeks game against Aaron Rodgers as opposed to this game against Mitch Trubisky where there was another CB on the field actually worse than Baker before I made this post. Preach...

DeAndre Baker — Baker is now splitting reps with Sam Beal, and it is increasingly apparent that the Giants are losing patience with the overwhelmed rookie cornerback. Twice against the Packers Baker was yanked immediately after poor plays. Baker was pulled after the game’s second play, when he allowed a 43-yard completion to Allen Lazard. He was pulled again in the third quarter after a 25-yard pass to DeVante Adams. Baker was in zone coverage on the second play, didn’t appear to make much of an effort to break up the pass, and got yelled at by Antoine Bethea.

Jenkins got burned and Baker was coming over to help. Go rewatch it.

There was one play, I forget which one, maybe the long TD pass, where it looked like Bethea just let his guy go to no one in particular. If Baker is supposed to be that deep on that play in zone coverage it's a bad play design. And why would Bethea actually stick to his zone if he sees no one is next him?

I dont think thats how it works They do go hand in hand tho. Well kind of, when the pass rush is doing well it makes it easier for the coverage guys to do well, rather than vice versa.

By Lance Zierlein NFL Analyst
Draft Projection Rounds 1-2
NFL Comparison Asante Samuel
Overview Pesky press corner who has proven he can thrive against man-to-man challenges in a competitive conference. Baker isn't a burner, but has good play speed and the foot quickness and pattern recognition to stay tight in his coverage. The biggest issue teams might have with Baker is determining whether or not he can give up 30-plus pounds against bigger, outside receivers and still hold up. While there might be some matchup concerns at times, his ball skills, talent and competitive nature should overcome his smaller frame.
Strengths Consistency and competitiveness are his hallmarks No touchdowns allowed with five interceptions since 2017 Confident in press coverage Crowds release-acceleration to slow route-timing Has quick trigger to turn and sprint when needed Foot quickness to stay tied to early phase of routes Dials into opponents' route speed and stays in-phase Good feel for timing of route breaks for effective matching Excellent field awareness and in constant state of communication with teammates Loves to squat and lurk on underneath route from off-man Impressive burst to close Plays the edges to challenge throws Good timing on jump balls Aggressive and accurate swipes at the catch point Willing and able as open-field tackler
Weaknesses Small by NFL standards with thin lower body Matching against NFL size on the outside could be a concern Early to open hips against press fakes from Alabama receivers Grabby when trailing complex routes Physicality at the top of routes will be flagged in the pros Plays a little too tall in space Inconsistent reading quarterback's eyes for early jumps on the throw Struggles to disengage from blocks in perimeter run support Dropped potential takeaway opportunities

Ledyard Vertical Coverage - Despite not being a speedster, didn’t give up much in the vertical passing game in 2018. Survives with quickness to flip and get vertical off the line of scrimmage and consistent physicality during the route. True speedsters will be a concern if playing off the ball, but from press man can typically delay releases enough to keep from being stacked. Needs to watch the grabbiness at the top of the route.
Fluidity/Agility - Transitions are pretty smooth from press position, doesn’t take many false steps or give up positioning easily, and has quick feet to recover when he does. Some tightness in space and needs to gear down a little to change direction. Does his best work in close quarters.
Ball Skills - Hit-or-miss with finding the ball with his back to it down the field, but definitely improved in 2018. Flashes the ability to close on the ball from off coverage and make plays. Elevates at the catch point and plays through the receiver’s hands. Not a ton of turnover production in college, but process is good.
Click-and-Close - Inconsistent closing on underneath routes. Knows his speed limitations and will at times get in his pedal too quickly and open up a ton of space for easy completions underneath if the quarterback is on time. If he cuts down on the amount of space surrendered, he is quick out of his pedal to break on the ball.
Press Ability - Patient from press position. Won’t fall for jab steps and stays balanced to match releases. Gets hands on and rarely gets off balance. Excellent length despite a lighter frame. Plays with good physicality and strength. Tough for vertical threats to get going as he boxes them to the sideline.
Route Recognition - Doesn’t pass off routes super well in zone coverage. Instincts are average as a space defender, clearly at his best in man coverage with less to process. Can get confused by more complicated route combinations and struggle to process. Excellent reading releases at the line of scrimmage and not getting jumpy in press.
Tackling - Not a big hitter nor a tackler who seeks out contact, but typically accepts the mantle of responsibility in game situations, targeting low and getting most runners on the ground. Can slide off stops when attempting to arm tackle full speed runners.
Run Support - Not overly enthusiastic about defending the run, but is capable enough to get the job done. Lots of press man opportunities didn’t give him a ton of chances to get involved in run defense. Getting off wide receiver blocks is not an area of strength yet.
Competitive Toughness - A few business decisions in the run game, but plays hard and will give full effort in pursuit, even from opposite side of the field. Plays tough in coverage and has an edge to his game that is easy to appreciate. Chirp king who took it personally when Deebo Samuel didn’t know who he was before their matchup.
Athleticism/Size - Height and weight are average for the position, but arm length is outstanding which is important given his most effective role as a press-man corner. Average overall athlete in basically every testing area.
BEST TRAIT - Press Ability
WORST TRAIT - Speed
RED FLAGS - Have been told by a few sources close to the program that Baker’s practice habits, work ethic and coachability are often not ideal. Could take a relatable coach to know how to handle/get the most out of him. Another source said he didn’t take Combine training seriously.
If you’re looking for a press man corner, there are none more pro-ready than Baker in this class. His upside can’t match Greedy Williams’, but his technique and patience at the line of scrimmage are only outdone by his physicality. Baker has speed concerns and can get a bit grabby, but his ability to match all types of receivers off the line of scrimmage results in some impressive tape.
I do think Baker is a little bit scheme dependent as a press man corner, as he isn’t a great processor in zone and doesn’t play his best football in off-man. Keeping things simple for him in terms of assignments may be important, as Baker’s ball skills and length at the catch point show up more frequently in man coverage than anywhere else. I don’t think he’ll ever be a true no. 1 cornerback in the NFL, but he’s a sure starter who can help from day one if his character checks out.
Round Grade: 2nd

Saw today on Giants insider Baker is down to 57% completion against coming from where he was that is pretty good.

I've been tough on Baker but I give him credit at this point. Taking into account the level of competition the last 3 games, his progress is for real.

I like the optimism but I just don't really see it at this point. We've had a very soft schedule the past few weeks but he hasn't really broken out yet.
Devante Parker had a big game...Baker gave up a jump ball TD. It was a matchup that supposedly plays to his strengths. Man-to-man coverage..jump ball that could have been intercepted....but.... Touchdown Dolphins. To be honest, he just looked out-muscled and outmatched and a bit lost in coverage. I liked how he looked pissed off after the play though...to me that shows heart.
