I just want to make sure I understand this post: we would have been better off taking Josh Rosen than Barkley.

What if he is as they say, and can play a very good OT too. Start him at RT in 2020 and go from there. IS Zeitler going to be 100%? He had a shoulder injury right? Did it require surgery? That wasn't your question though. I would not take a chance on an OG in this draft in the top 4 because my very good OG had a banged up shoulder in week 1 last year. I believe he only missed 1 game and that was an ankle injury. Also that was his first missed game in 5 seasons, not much of an injury risk (not Pugh). Way too much of a risk to fill a hole that probably does not exist. If we didn't have Zeitler I would not have a problem with it.
If Wirfs can play very good OT I would not have a problem taking him, how ever I would not take a guy I think is very good over a guy I think is great at pick #4 in the draft. At pick #4 I don't want very good, I want great. If there is no one I think is great then yes I would take the very good OT.

I think Jeudy will be GREAT. Elite great. If he was, should we take him at 4?

I think Jeudy will be GREAT. Elite great. If he was, should we take him at 4? How do you judge everyone else? If you think Jeudy is the next Jerry Rice and everyone else is just ok then yes I think you should take him. Except in a few situations I think you take the guy you believe will be amazing. QB, very closely rated players and players you have no room for are the exceptions. And having no room only applies to a few positions like QB, OL and RB. If you have two All Pro DEs you can work with having another one (Osi, Tuck, draft JPP type situation).

I just want to make sure I understand this post: we would have been better off taking Josh Rosen than Barkley. 100%...not even debatable. Well, I'm sure you all will. Coulda, woulda, shoulda...the mantra of the after the fact sports fan. Going into the draft, all 5 of those QB's should have been taken OVER BARKLEY. Well, unless we had Jones....then a trade back was still in order ...or the DE. BTW, I was ready for Jackson as your example, as his pre draft grade was 2nd round, where a running back with top talents should be taken...but since he has had success, you've chosen the failure Rosen...because as we all know....easier to defend in hindsight the failures. If no QB intrigued the Giants, due to the Eli can still play mix up, a trade back was in order....lot's of other running backs that year Value wise, and many here knowing it was time to think about an Eli replacement...yeah, not even a close call. A QB should have been taken over a running back. IMHO of course, well, me and the boys down at the lab. To be clear, the gif is in no way meant as an insult. I'm cool with your approach; just because I don't agree with it doesn't mean I don't see its merit.

Yeah, that's usually the closing argument when a poster gets lazy .... you should work in the NFL or the freckled response of our coaches and GM know more then I do...or the vintage, I am correct, look everybody, I knew it....see post 37 where I said what was going to happen ... GM qualifications on display. Of course, being a message board of faith and science, we share opinions, and mine is not much of a stretch...there were quite a few Barkley to the Giants mocks at the end, but that was an easy guess as DG was telling so many people what he was doing it almost seemed an obvious smokescreen. The big debate was QB vs RB, and RB value at 2...trade the pick if no QB was your guy...that was for the Eli could still win it all side. All this said, and my hating the Jones pick as well and still not totally sold on him....I do know we sure should be worrying more about the wall in front of him vs some Simmons. DG gave us Barkley, and then Jones, like it or not...and yet, we still seem to abhor "wasting" good picks on those boring fat guys who block...and what would make them successful.

For me as a fan, personality is important. I don't mind a tad of over confidence and we have sure seen it in Rivers, Big Ben, Peyton, Favre ect. I appreciated Mayfields swagger and thought he was the top QB that year coming out--but did not see him as a NYG pick. I was suspicious of Darnold, and really liked Josh Allen. I still think he could emerge as the best long term PRO QB. I went into that draft hoping that if Barkley got snagged early that NYG would take Allen. I did not want Rosen not only because of his divisive persona, love of stirring the pot on social media(people said he was Eli 2.0 before DJ came along umm, not so much) but he ALREADY had a history of concussions in College. With the new protocol, it was a very real possibility to have such a high pick sitting on the sidelines instead of developing. That of course, if his play even warranted the opportunity. I think they got the type of person they wanted to represent NYG from the QB position. Lets all hope he continues to progress.

There is good and bad with Dave Gettleman. A lot of it gets overblown in the massive NY media market. I think some of his moves wouldn't be so highly criticized if he didn't respond defiantly to some of the questions or provide too much for sound bytes. I was not sold on any of the QBs in 2018 so I actually liked the Barkley pick. No, we didn't get the QB in that draft and I think the jury is still out on all of them. We got the QB a year later in Daniel Jones who I would rather have over all of them, and its not just about the talent, although that is obviously important. I just feel as though he is the right fit. You have to be a competent QB but you also have to have a certain something to survive as a QB in NY. Eli had it and I think Daniel does to. You know it when you see it. Now I think the offense is going to be in capable hands over the next several years. The goal of this draft has to be to get some difference makers up front, which doesn't necessarily have to be in the first round. Ideally Gettleman will be able to trade back a few spots to accumulate more assets so Oline and the defense can be addressed some more.

Mine would be: Simmons - As a long time Giants fan who grew up in the 80s when the LBs were the cornerstone of the defense, I think it is a travesty that the organization has devalued the position so much. I want to see the team invest resources here and get some playmakers. Okudah - 1A with Simmons. He is a technician and an athlete. He has the smarts and the character to go along with being able to play. He is a culture builder and potentially a future captain. If not for all the resources already put into the secondary recently I would probably put him first. Wirfs - Great feet, Athletic and enough size. Plus Iowa churns out some good lineman. I think he has the highest ceiling and can play on the left side. Wills - Has a nasty streak, is a road grader in the run game and is a good pass protector. Not sure he will be able to play LT. I think he will be a Pro Bowler on the right. Thomas - A true left tackle because he has played there. I think he has the highest floor and might be the most ready day 1. He struggled some against some of the better D lines.Becton - I see him as a bit of a project. Has some good traits but I worry about his size being a hindrance. Heavy guys usually dont get lighter. I wonder how he will do against speed. Jeudy - Would be high on my list if not for other needs. I think he is the best WR in this draft. Lamb - I see him as a mid first round talent. Will be a solid player for some team. I hope the Giants dont draft him absent a trade down. Nice fair insightful post I do however want to see some backing on this bolded part as I have watched EVERY bulldog game last year...struggled? This is considered his worse tape ... Delpit with a beauty blitz sack at 5:37...guys glides out there. You are probably right about Thomas. Yes the LSU game I felt his rep took a bit of a hit but my analysis of him is more based on what I've heard then what I've seen myself. And I guess that could be the pre-draft buzz, where every year it seems a solidly rated prospect takes a tumble for whatever reason.

Yep, and Thomas is a beast in the run blocking, especially in the gap...but LSU was destroying other SEC powerhouse teams last year... like Ohio Sate beating a Rutgers, so Georgia had to go pass every down to come back vs the strength of running the ball...probably when some of the longer pass sets gave pause to many scouts, those with his feet...nothing he can't correct as just the next, and probably last development stage he needs to take.

I will never argue with anyone over the need to build the trenches, particularly when you suck so much you're picking in the top 5 two years in a row. I think we have violently agreed on this in the past. And while I understand your approach, as I said I don't completely agree with it. That's primarily due to the evidence that it's no more accurate or effective than any other approach although like most models, its logic is pretty unassailable. At least we don't have to worry about that boring shit this year. I'm reading PFF has the Giants taking Jerry Jeudy. Another long term, dyed in the wool major building block to a thoughtfully well built team. Maybe there's a match up nightmare TE looming out there as well; we can only hope.

This is a PFF post FA mock draft...the latest. I am not on board with it, but Becton over Simmons all day long. 1. CINCINNATI BENGALS — QB JOE BURROW, LSU The Bengals will likely get some pretty incredible offers from the Dolphins to swap spots, but they should stay put. Burrow is simply that good. 2. WASHINGTON REDSKINS — EDGE CHASE YOUNG, OHIO STATE The trade for Kyle Allen looks like the nail in the coffin on any serious Tua Tagovailoa hype. At this point, it’s the draft’s most ‘sure thing’ to the Redskins. 3. MIAMI DOLPHINS (VIA DETROIT LIONS) — QB TUA TAGOVAILOA, ALABAMA The Lions are in the driver’s seat with the No. 3 pick. It looks like it will be an all-out bidding war between the Dolphins and Chargers at this point, with Miami able to outbid any offer made by Los Angeles. That means it’s Tua Tagovailoa and his back-to-back 90.0-plus overall grades heading to Miami. 4. NEW YORK GIANTS — OT MEKHI BECTON, LOUISVILLE
Size and speed have been tenets of Dave Gettleman’s team-building strategy in his tenure as general manager. No one has more of the former in this draft than Becton, and after running a 5.1 in the 40-yard dash, he’s got some of the latter as well.
.... 7. CAROLINA PANTHERS — LB ISAIAH SIMMONS, CLEMSON The need here is obvious, and so is the talent. On 107 career targets at Clemson, Simmons forced 22 incompletions and picked off four others. Those are silly numbers for a ‘linebacker.’

If Gettleman selects Becton at #4 then he’s begging to get fired. Becton a player that is getting much attention right now would be such a reach at #4 that it would have to be that Gettleman has become senile over night. And that his draft board is written in crayon.
It’s the only logical explanation of such an idiotic thought. The #4th pick HAS to be a major contributor right out of the gate. If Gettleman swings and misses at this pick you might as well start mailing him get well cards because he will be sent packing faster than toilet paper at your local grocery stores.

The problem with that is, how do you know those 4 arent a Joe Thomas or Tony Bosseli? And by the way, how the hell is Bosseli not in the HOF? If Wirfs is the next Quentin Nelson at G, is it worth it? Speaking of...Quenton Nelson will be getting a huge second contract, and this board will be split over signing Barkley to that second one...both horrible 2 overall picks, but Nelson > Barkley pick wise all draft day long. I don't see Wirfs as a Nelson, but if he became one...hell yeah worth it. I think Wirfs is far more Zach Martin than Q Nelson. Both play G in the NFL, but Martin can play tackle, Nelson cant. You dont take a G at 4 or a RT for that matter. Thomas looks to be the only lock to be a LT. Wirfs and Wills look like RTs to me.

Those are silly numbers for a ‘linebacker.’ They're entitled to change their minds too I guess. Man, Becton seems like too much of a project to me. But I do think his middle name is molly so we may be stuck with him. They have pure analytic drafts, where you seen JJ and then Ruggs...and subjective according a certain writer...like every other "expert". PFF believe, through data...and you can disagree as that's fine, some do...but they have a pass value that takes out much value for running backs and run stuffing DT's...and they also grade Daniel Jones according to his many fumbles, that takes down a grade. So what I'm trying to say, is that...well, they hate many of the players we pick and sign, and trade for. And in their defense, we don't win with them. They value the WR quite a bit as well as TE and CB, and why the analytic draft will probably spit to one of the highly graded pass catching phenoms to us at 4. I certainly don't agree, as I'm all over OT, and probably to a fault. I'm in favor of the trade back, but the Lions hold that ace. Once the Dolphins trade up, the Chargers have no worries about us taking Herbert or Love unless they believe we trade far past where we believe "our" tackle will be. Hell, we might think our best OT being Josh Jones, and believe he will be waiting there after a bigger slide of a tradeback, only to once again have a team trade up and reach to 13 for Jones as we pick 14....and we begin that unplanned frenzy of taking some Eli Apple again. Offensive tackles get picked and picked a lot...and reached for a lot. I'd prefer the Giants just take their OT they have graded the highest, and run up to the podium at 4 versus playing games...unless, somehow the Chargers do fear some smoke....not sure Dave Gettleman is a very good poker player...his tells are his ego and idiocy with the media.

Jerry Jeudy! SB LV here we come! A QB best friend is a great receiver. Know what else helps? An offensive line, I know what you’re thinking. What is that? I blew the dust off of some old Giants books, and you know what? Four scores and seven years ago we did have a good offensive line. And we actually won some games too. I say draft Andrew Thomas, stick him at right tackle for the year. Let him learn the game and in 2021 send the much liked and respected Solder ass out of town and move Thomas at left tackle. It’s time Mr hog mollie himself backs up his claim of “fixing the offensive line.” Because right now he sounds like a politician, all talk and bluster, with no solutions to the issue. Hopefully, with Thomas or insert your player here (except for Becton) he's far too much of a reach at 4. We can finally trot out a respectable and dare I say a dominant offensive line.

DJ had him at 4, and I now believe Charley Casserly also has Becton to us at 4. This is exactly a tell as to how the insiders think of the Stone Age Gettleman..all we can do is hope he, or some Judge, can get him to trade back and accumulate picks...in a difficult pick 4 with most teams already signing up their QB's...

Wow you think Becton is that poor? I don't think he is much different than Thomas honestly. All four of the OTs have questions about them but Thomas seems to lead the pack from my eyes and Becton isn't far off.
What's your thoughts on Thomas if Becton is graded as "instant fire"?

I see Thomas as legitimate left tackle in this league. Hard to say the same with Becton. I find players that massive to have far too many issues with their knees and backs. I think he will fall into that as he gets older. He could be a good pro, you and I don’t know that for certain right now. But with a franchise that is grasping at respectability and wins we need a player who is going to be penciled in as rock on our line for a decade. I feel Thomas is that guy. Edit: Never said he was poor.

I agree actually. That is my one big fear with him. I think his upside and Thomas' are equal, I do think Thomas is the safer pick though. Thomas is also a mean blocker that mauls people so any Becton fans can't be too upset with Thomas as a pick.
