AWESOME!!!! NHL unveils 24-team playoff format, details its return to play plan The league is currently considering 10 hub cities Here are the details about the playoff format that Bettman outlined: There is no set start date for the return of play Two hub cities -- one for Eastern Conference games and one for Western Conference games -- will be announced at a later date Teams will be limited to 50 personnel in their respective hub city. A small number of support staff will also be permitted in event arenas A comprehensive COVID-19 testing system will be put in place Phase 2 of the return to play plan is expected to begin in early June, but there's still no official date Phase 3 will include the start of training camp and is targeted for early July Phase 4, which has no target date yet, will include the return of play with clubs facing off in two hub cities for round robins, qualifying rounds, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs The NHL is currently considering Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Pittsburgh, Toronto, and Vancouver as hub cities. In this particular playoff format, the top four seeds (determined by points percentage) in the East would be the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. The top four teams in the West would be the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars. Those eight teams will face off in a Round Robin in order to determine seeding for the First Round. Here's what the play-in round in each conference will look like: East No. 5 Penguins vs. No. 12 Canadiens No. 6 Hurricanes vs. No. 11 Rangers No. 7 Islanders vs. No. 10 Panthers No. 8 Maple Leafs vs. No. 9 Blue Jackets West No. 5 Oilers vs. No. 12 Blackhawks No. 6 Predators vs. No. 11 Coyotes No. 7 Canucks vs. No. 10 Wild No. 8 Flames vs. No. 9 Jets www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/nhl-unveils-24-team-playoff-format-details-its-return-to-play-plan/It will feel like a March Madness playoff atmosphere.

....aaaand the sad news. MLB 2020 season negotiations: League's new economic proposal leaves union 'disappointed,' reports say The MLB Players Association is not pleased with the latest plan from owners On Tuesday, the owners reportedly approved a proposal that was then shipped to the union. Although their original intent was to put a 50-50 revenue sharing plan on the table, the owners instead are said to have asked the players to sign off on a "sliding scale of compensation." This plan would trim the salaries of players set to make the most money in 2020, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale. Revenue sharing, as it turns out, is not mentioned in the proposal, per Nightengale's report. ESPN's Jeff Passan reports the highest-paid players would receive "perhaps less than 40% of their full-season salaries." While players making the league minimum might get all or most of their prorated salary (based on the number of games on the 2020 schedule), Passan notes that "the possibility of all players having to take a reduction is part of the league's proposal." www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-2020-season-negotiations-leagues-new-economic-proposal-leaves-union-disappointed-reports-say/

The MLB players union is the only major sports union that literally doesn't care about the sport. Its truly pathetic. Get out there and play baseabll for millions of dolalrs already. The only pro sports players with 100% guaranteed contracts when signed. They can take an L on this one to get the game going. Now if they are truly scared of the virus? Ok, stay home. But its about money. IMO I think it is because of their guaranteed contracts. The players are embolden. I am not a cooperate lawyer. But I do think if the league can not afford to pay the full amount of the contracts. Probably what the players expect. The league and all of its franchises can dissolve and reemerge as new entities. Removing themselves from all their financial obligations and guarantees. They would not have any players under contract. ( In essence they do not now because of their refusal to play) It would be a way for MLB to come out of this without the hole that was dug this year. The Yankees have the highest payroll. Do you think Steinbrenner is going to pony up 250 million out of his own pocket so his team will play? I would use this as a weapon to get them to come to the table and hash out a deal for this season. If you do not want to. We will renegotiate all of your contracts under a new league for less money and no guarantees.

NBA Board of Governors approves 22-team plan to finish the 2019-20 season at Disney World Each team will play eight games with a play-in tournament for the final seed in each conference before the playoffs After several months on hiatus, the NBA made significant headway in returning to play. On Thursday's board of governors call with league commissioner Adam Silver, the owners approved a plan to finish out the remainder of the 2019-20 season at Disney World in Orlando, where eventually, a champion will be crowned, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. The vote required three-fourths support to pass, and it received a 29-1 vote from owners on the call, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The owners now need formal approval from the National Basketball Players Association before the league can move forward. The NBPA is expected to hold a virtual call on Friday to approve the plan that the owners just voted on, according to the New York Times' Marc Stein. The league is targeting a start date of July 31, where 22 of the 30 NBA teams are expected to participate in Orlando. That will include the 16 current playoff teams as well as the New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards. Teams will play an abbreviated version of the regular season that will consist of eight games, as well as a play-in tournament for the eighth seed in both conferences. The tournament will only happen if the No. 9 seed finishes within four games of the No. 8 seed, in which case the No. 9 seed will have to beat the No. 8 seed twice to earn the final playoff spot in their conference. www.cbssports.com/nba/news/nba-board-of-governors-approves-22-team-plan-to-finish-the-2019-20-season-at-disney-world/

NHL and NHLPA reportedly put finishing touches on Stanley Cup playoffs format agreement There are still many elements of the four phase return plan yet to be agreed upon The NHL and NHLPA have reportedly finalized agreements of the 2019-20 playoff format, according to Pierre LeBrun. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced last week that the season will resume and go straight into the playoffs, without playing the remainder of the regular season schedule that was left when the season stopped in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Both sides reportedly came to the agreement that all four playoff rounds will be best-of-7 and the play-in round will be best of 5. After each round, the teams will be re-seeded and will not be bracketed. www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/nhl-and-nhlpa-reportedly-put-finishing-touches-on-stanley-cup-playoffs-format-agreement/

This would be WILD Report: MLB, owners focused on 48-game schedule for 2020 MLB's discussions with owners about a shortened 2020 season are now focused on a 48-game schedule with full prorated pay for players, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN. Previous reports indicated the league was seeking between 50-60 games at the prorated level. The MLBPA proposed a 114-game schedule, which the league rejected, but the union is reportedly willing to play an 82-game season with fully prorated salaries. The union "resoundingly" rejected further pay cuts for players Thursday evening. The two sides are at a standstill in negotiations. When the league and owners rejected the idea of a 114-game schedule at full prorated salaries, they made it clear that they wouldn't present a counteroffer. The league is in a position where it can implement a shortened season unilaterally, Passan notes. The current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire after the 2021 season. Owners have said that playing a longer schedule without fans in attendance would cause substantial losses that they are reportedly unwilling to absorb. The players have asked owners to open their books to show specific numbers related to the expected financial shortfall, but that request has not been granted. www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1976205/report-mlb-owners-focused-on-48-game-schedule-for-2020

They are both being greedy in a time they shouldnt be. They need to meet in the middle. This is a very unique situation. Its not like it will happen every year. I thought an 82 game season was perfect. MLB owners take a huge bath on the revenues especially if no fans are welcome to watch, and MLB players get their salaries cut to 65%. I say 65% because even with only half the games played they still are practicing and have the postseason.
