Just wanted to share that I got accepted to PFF's trial team. I will grade a handful of past games to start off. Depending on how well I do, I have a chance to make it onto the full-time team by the end of June. Wish me luck πͺπΏ Best of luck in the gig, man. Β How do they know the assignments of every player on the field for every play? Β Β Thanks bro. To answer your question, let's say the defense is in a nickel D single high look (FS high middle, SS at the LOS).. after the snap if the SS bails out and covers deep right, and the FS rotates and cover deep left we know 1/3 of the play which is Cover 2. Now we look at the CBs and see what they did, maybe they jammed and played man covering crossing routes or taking a WR past 5-10 yards vertical... or they handed those crossing routes off, or played trail technique for 8-10 yards. This will add another 1/3 of info. Now we know ifnthey handed the crosing routes off its a Cover2 Zone. Qt this point if you understand schemes you know there not too much you can do with LBs if your CBs and Safeties are in a Cover 2 Zone. So to get the last 1/3 you pay attention to whether LBs blitzing, if any DL players bail into a zone etc... Those actions by the LB and DL can make the play either a Normal Cover2 Zone with LB playing underneath coverage, Cover 2 Zone Tampa where LB play deeper in the middle, Cover 2 Zone with a delayed blitz, or a Disguised Cover 2 Zone Blitz where a DL pulls off into a zone and the LB takes his spot rushing. I hope this helped answer your question.

na man everyone is entitled to their opinion Just make sure you slap someone if they give Aaron Rodgers a negative grade after throwing 300+ yards and 5 TDs with no INTs again, because it was "too easy" for him. Do you get to meet Chris Collingsworth?

Congrats Gunner, Best of luck. You know you would be the guy we complain to when PFF rates one of the Giants lousy. Your our inside source.
Seriously Good luck

My first trial game is set for tomorrow. One quarter of a bcs game from a few years back. I've got to breakdown everything on each play. Who's on the field (offense & defense), their positions pre-snap, and each players assignment on the play. Never realized it was so tedious until I read the breakdown of how they do things. It's assumed that for a full 3.5 hour game you may have to put in a minimum of 6 hours to get all the information documented. i left my first email breakdown from pff in the other giants forum your in. Huge time investment.

They sucked They played pretty good They played great Seriously though I dont have the patience, inclination, or game knowledge schematically to break down film like that.

Congrats dude. Now try and manipulate some Giants players grades from the inside. I'll get Jones in the 90s in no time π
Itβd be more Machiavellian if you kept all their numbers artificially low. Anywho, congrats man. Iβd love for you to keep us updated on the process and goings on. I think a lot of us would find it interesting. Good luck!!

How do you know each players assignment on every play? Watching their movements from different angles Well, you would know what they thought their assignment was. How would you know if they missed their assignment? Like a receiver ran the wrong route?

Well, you would know what they thought their assignment was. How would you know if they missed their assignment? Like a receiver ran the wrong route? That's always been a mystery to me . I played a four man(DT) front in college and it was shed your blocker read and react . In HS we played a 53 monster , we lined up the exact same way every time but our assignments were always different. Sometimes outside eye ,outside shoulder or inside shoulder but when we lined up it always looked the same. Early on with PFF, BB was asked about the ratings. He admitted he would have no idea how to grade opposing players because he doesnt know their assignments.

To be fair, based on Saquon's performance in 2019 he was not a top 50 player in regards to stats and production. Now if we're talking pure skill.. he's top 3 everytime.

That is the thing with PFF. Their stats are very good when talking pure stats. When they start grading guys is where I stop paying attention because they have no possible way to know what the guy was supposed to do or not.
