There are so many new parts/players on both sides of the ball.... new coaches... new system for every player. It takes a decent amount of time for everyone to be on the same page, as we saw Monday night... a lot of mental mistakes in coverage and blocking assignments. It takes time to become familiar with the system and with each other, and to build chemistry. I think what we see the second half of this season will be a better indication of what our nucleus truly is, and what parts we still need to replace to take the next step to respectfulness. I'm not complaining for real until they get some time to get the kinks out.
I am confidant we have the right coaches and QB to build success from.
Next year, a solid .500 season. 2022 we will definitely be playoff contenders. The guys that are keepers now will be way more experienced, will know the system, and will have a solid chemistry. Solid vets will be there for newer rookies to fill those gaps, like Banks in '83, Karl Nelson and Joe Morris in '84, and Bavaro in 1985. I feel that what Gettlemen inherited in 2018 isn't too dissimilar to the crap George Young inherited in '79. Young got the first important piece his first year... Simms in '79, for the next 13-14 yrs. Jones of 2019 is our Simms of 1979. So, we have, hopefully found a good, quick plug-in to replace Eli, and we won't have to play musical chairs trying to find a solid offensive leader that some teams like Cleveland have done. Barkley should be another that eliminates the need to draft a RB at the top, and we can devote those top picks to another couple OLinemen, WR, LB, and TE (sadly, I don't think Engrem is our Bavaro. It took Young 6 years to put the Oline together that was so great and dominant in '86. 1985 was the first year that all 5 Olinemen plus Bavaro played together. We are definitely 2 Olinemen away from a corp that we can feel really good about and project them there for several years.
I expect to see serious signs of improvement the 2nd half this season, .500 or better next year, and serious playoff contention in '22. Back to the Superbowl type of team by '23, '24... and Judge hopefully building the same kind of career here as his mentor did in New England.
