First and foremost, I want to say, I was really disappointed with the fans last night. Looked like they didnt even show up. What a joke we have become supporting our team at home.
1-8 in the last 9 opening games now.
On to the game:
Daniel Jones. I really really want to say I love watching him play. He makes some great throws at times. My issue appears to be the same as last year with him in this game, and hopefully its due to no preseason and all that, but he likes to hold the ball too long still. No fumbles which was nice, but man, he had a play or 2 where he was just standing there not realizing the pass rush was coming. The 1st INT was him staring down the receiver, but it was a hell of a play by Watt. The 2nd, was all on DJ. A game changing demoralizing turnover. Throw it away or take the sack. He saw the rush coming the entire time. 19 drive play, ending in that was demoralizing.
OL. Thomas was our best OLineman. He stood his ground all game. Loved the pick, and this is why. He is our LT the next 10-12 years, and a probowl one at that. Willy Hernandez. Not sure he had a great game. I saw a couple of plays it looked like he was wiped out. Gates? Go back to backup OT. He is NOT a C in anyway. Zeitler. Well, not sure he had a strong game. Flemming. Backup at best as Ive been saying. Backup in NE, backup in Dallas, backup here. Pass protection was good early on, but wore down later once some exotic blitzes came. The run blocking, that might have been the worst showing I have seen in my 30+ years of watching this team. Jeez...
Barkley. Yes, the OL was awful, but this kid didnt help one bit. For a generational talent, touched by God, you would expect him to be able to pick up a blitz or catch a football. And his running style just isnt working. You cant win with a RB who gets negative yards in 80% of carries. He goes east and west too much. To me, Zeke is a much much better RB. When they both are hit behind the LOS, Barkley goes down and Zeke fights for 2-3 yards. Gallman and Lewis were non existent.
Engram, waste of a 1st round draft pick. I said trade him a year and a half ago now, we should have. Drops, bad routes, bad blocking. He is a slow footed outside WR. Kaden Smith should be our #1 TE going forward. Much better all around.
Slayton looks like the real deal. I mean, not elite, but a great WR. He knows how to get open and go and get a football. I dont see him as a #1 but he is certainly close. Shep had a solid game too. Board looks like some good depth. The rest meh. Need to get another WR in this group.
DLine looked good early, but opened up late. Still lack of a pass rush which is expected since we really didnt do much to upgrade it. Lawrence stood out to me as the best of the bunch. Great screen read too on a play. Williams had a good game I guess. Got a coverage sack. Very underwhelming though.
LBs Blake Martinez is the real deal. Havent had a LB like him in a long time. The rest were just fillers. No standouts.
DBs They held their own for a while but gave up some big plays too. Wide open receivers. Peppers looked ok. Bradberry got beat a couple times. Ballentine was ok. No one stood out but no one got abused either. Holmes had a decent first game too.
Playcalling was just ok. I dont know what would have worked and not worked with this group. I dont think there was any boneheaded play calls. Just werent translating.
Over all Im disappointed, like I have been 8 of the past 9 years. This game was winnable at one point, and the turnovers killed any momentum we had. That said, not being able to run the ball will cost us many many games and wear downt he D quick.
You say rebuilding, I say "Still?" Next year when DG gets fired, and we need a new GM, that GM will come in with a prepicked QB and HC. And if we lose again, those 2 will have short times here and the cycle continues.
I just dont want to be eliminated in October again. Year after year. It sucks. This game looked right out of the last couple of years. Bears up next. Cant fall 0-2.

I would love to see Eziekel Elliot and him switch places and then see who does what. ...and it wasn't him who coined the phrases "generational talent" and "touched by God" it was his GM, who, I agree, is starting to wear out his welcome. If Daniel Jones doesn't have an exceptional year, Gettleman is gone. It's not that I don't like him, but there's too many head scratchers for his attitude.

We looked eerily similar to last season’s product.

eh we basically had a bunch of kids who never even had a single preseason game get on the field competitively for the first time against a team that many pick to go to the superbowl, and a healthy and talented veteran defense thats tops in the league. Im actually encouraged by much of what I saw. that was a tall order for a team with all new staff, and very young. and really, do we have a roster even close to pitt? its amazing it was 26-16 really, therell be good teams that lose worse than that to the steelers, and ill bet look worse doing it. we hung in there and then i think we just ran out of steam late in the 3rd. the 19 play nothing burger drive seemed to have a demoralizing affect to some degree too. the guys didnt quit, but that was disappointing.
each year though i lose more hope for engram. dude is NOT a TE in the nfl. last nights just one game, but it typified his whole career, drops, not completing routes, blocks, etc, meh. before too many games i can see kaden smith stepping into number one.
the barkley stuffage EVERY play in the backfield is disconcerting though. geezus that was insane, it was like a belichick superbowl scheme level of crushing, they totally shut him down.

I’m encouraged by what I saw.
However it’s obvious-
We need more top tier targets at WR Ballantine is a weak link Engram is a joke We need a stud pass rusher Run blocking was pathetic Barkley needs to make something out of nothing like elite backs do - thus far he is far from elite
The good with better targets DJ will be a star Slayton looked good and proved he “ can” catch and run more than the fly/go route Thomas held up VERY WELL for a rookie LT vs a very good defense - no sacks given up by him Martinez looked solid Bradbury looks like a good get DL is stout Peppers had some nice returns
I liked the coaching DJ was trying to throw the ball away on the key turnover when his arm was hit - he wasn’t trying to throw into the end zone like so many whined about. The defense looked good until they got warn down.
I’m optimistic the future looks bright with a few key additions. Not selecting one of the better WR’s early in the draft looks like a bad DG decision.

not drafting a top tier WR is going to come back to haunt us this year.. As much as i want to agree would you pass the following players at the moment Thomas McKinney Peart Holmes? Yes I think Quez Watkins over Cam Brown would have been my choice as he looked like a clone of Slayton but more advanced.. But they had to get the line right and now looks like reinforcing the secondary was the right call I want to see more of Board(who showed he belonged yesterday)and Ratley It definitely gets fixed next year(don't be surprised if we jump on Gallup in free agency and he replaces both Shepard and Tate )

I agree with most of this Ballentine while a weak link also didn't embaress himself either,I was expecting every pass to go his way so that means he was on his guy quite a bit,the guy we got in the trade with Denver was horrible on that TD pass As far as getting a TOP WR ,we only had so many picks and a ton of needs. I hated the idea we passed on all these guys in probably the deepest class in history and a very important year in Jone's growth. Slayton looks legit but we also have seen in the league teams able to manufacture a dominant run game when they have weapons all over tbe field to open tbe box, which takes a lot of pressure off tbe O line Is Slayton enough to do this by himself? Doubt it now Personally I'd start to phase Tate out and give more opportunities to Board and Ratley as the year goes on,they have legit deep speed. And agreed that looked like a throw away

Watt also made a brilliant play on his int but our fans are also blaming Jones for that.

some random thoughts:
Offensively, they have a lot to improve on for the OLine and blitz pickups. Columbo definitely has his hands full with this. Daniel Jones seems to have control of the offense and improved pocket awareness but his situational awareness was lacking lastnite. Lets see if that trend continues. SB needs to learn to pick up a damn blitz. This is starting to drive me nuts. None of the TEs blocked well and EE decided he didnt wanna show up at all.
Defensively, nothing happened that I didnt expect. Some pressure from the DLine and LBs and hopefully that will continue. Good job stopping the run before they gave up on that. Defensive backfield is pretty much in flux so we'll have to see where they settle with that. I have confidence they'll eventually learn how to deal with the counters to man coverage.
IMO, the special teams was one of the better performing units in the entire NFL this week. There were some horrid special teams play in the league in week 1.
Overall what we expected but the run game performance was alarming.

Engram has so much potential but thus far he is a glorified Travis Beckum in a league that has become softer since the time of Travis Beckum. Point being, I don't think Engram would've been a high prospect if you go back ten years, which really is not long ago at all.

Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to agree with anyone who thinks it felt the same as last year. I think the difference on defense was clear, in hustle alone. Not to mention, while it's become a bit of a cliche, the defense was clearly more "multiple." Whatever DJ was going to do on that ill fated play he needed to do .5 seconds earlier. Football is a wild game, and that half a second changed everything.
Things I liked:
Andrew Thomas in pass pro Daniel Jones outside of a single play. He is a strong armed, very accurate QB. That's a heck of a foundation. Darius Slayton Defensive hustle and game scheme Blake Martiniez's pursuit Jason Garrett helping make things happen when we legit couldn't even run for positive yardage
Things I did not like: Run blocking A running game having a bad night meaning we couldn't get positive yardage vs. just being stopped for short gains and having to grind. It's gotta be the latter to have any success. I don't expect us to run on every team, but I expect a bad night to not be mostly negative yardage. Evan Engram having a bad night. Cost the team 7 points, a 3rd down conversion, and a big play for momentum. Get it together man, I'm one of your biggest defenders Corey Ballentine. Unfortunately we need him to be more than he might have the capability to be. He wasn't totally awful, but it wasn't a great night. Like it or not, he's a starter right now. Run defense from mid 3rd quarter on. Teams should not be able to run the ball on us, it's what we're built to stop.

He was scrambling, saw the heat coming. Threw it when the defender was right there. He either needs to throw it away before the defender got there or eat the sack.

Have to also remember Ryan had a grand total of like 5 practices with this team. Once he has a full grasp he probably becomes our qb in the secondary and it tightens up a bit. Actually thought Holmes held up well in his first game

Obviously with new personnel and coaching it isnt a mirror of last year, but the results are the same. We were good early and got blown out late. The defense was out couched at the half. The killer turnovers. The lack of any run game offensively. These are things we saw last year too.

Line stunk last night, the rookie thomas graded highest (although still sub-par). I think that largely explains the performance of barkley, and a good part of Jones too:
Giants starting O-lineman PFF grades for week 1:
LT Andrew Thomas: 60.8 (mediocre)
LG Will Hernandez: 46.3 (terrible)
C Nick Gates: 54.4 (bad)
RG Kevin Zeitler: 49.6 (very bad)
RT Cameron Fleming: 51.6 (very bad)
Also keep in mind this was a top tier defense. You could tell by how well they adjusted after our first series. Steelers are geared to take on the mighty Ravens, when all we have to do is be competitve with also rans like cowboys, eagles, football team. The only win in division last week was the football team, over another division team. This division stunk it up last year, so if we hang in there we can have a better chance this year given less turmoil at the QB position and a better HC (I am not annointing Judge, just saying anyone is better than Shurmur).

This division stunk it up last year, so if we hang in there we can have a better chance this year given less turmoil at the QB position and a better HC (I am not annointing Judge, just saying anyone is better than Shurmur). Gates and Thomas were not the biggest problem on the OL the as everyone predicted they would be. Both were ok in pass protection overall. That was the best game by a Giants LT that I've seen in a long time. I don't know what's going on with Will Hernandez, after a strong rookie season he has not played well. He and Zeitler should be the foundation of a strong interior and there's no excuse for how badly they played.

First and foremost, I want to say, I was really disappointed with the fans last night. Looked like they didnt even show up. What a joke we have become supporting our team at home. 1-8 in the last 9 opening games now. On to the game: Daniel Jones. This post should be distributed to the Giants front office because it perfectly summarized this game and team. Can't argue with a single point made here.

Line stunk last night, the rookie thomas graded highest (although still sub-par). I think that largely explains the performance of barkley, and a good part of Jones too: Giants starting O-lineman PFF grades for week 1: LT Andrew Thomas: 60.8 (mediocre) LG Will Hernandez: 46.3 (terrible) C Nick Gates: 54.4 (bad) RG Kevin Zeitler: 49.6 (very bad) RT Cameron Fleming: 51.6 (very bad) Also keep in mind this was a top tier defense. You could tell by how well they adjusted after our first series. Steelers are geared to take on the mighty Ravens, when all we have to do is be competitve with also rans like cowboys, eagles, football team. I wasnt on the hernandez bandwagon, even when did grade well. seemed like all his college highlights were pancaking 210lb linebackers. doesnt translate to NFL. need to see better technique from him

Agreed on Thomas. His pass blocking against that pass rush is very encouraging for being thrown to the wolves his first game

Colombo’s got his work cut out for him with this group
