No thanks not for top dollar anyway 2019 he had like a half sack through the first half of the year Giants Edge guys need to play the pass as well as the run. Thats why Golden wasn't a fit.

This is what I like to call a terrible evaluation on our general manager and his staffs part. Not only did we part ways with a young player at a position of need, we threw him away like a used up tissue.
When your GM discards a player due to him not fitting a scheme you have a narrow minded general manager running the team. We all saw the ability Okwara showcased in limited snaps. You don’t part ways with players like that, especially when they come cheap. You put their talent on your defense and make it work. I’m sure if Gettleman drafted Okwara he would still be with the team. This was when Gettleman jettisoned all of Reese’s players.

And he probably would have flourished with Graham This is more a Betcher move than Gettleman move IMO... Remember Yes Patricia was an awful HC But he comes from that New England culture where ..tell me what a player can do One of the few players that flourished there

Did not like it when Okwara and Kennard were both allowed to leave.
Well at least the guy from Detroit works here now.

wasnt a big deal at the time when he left. Oh well... oh really? I think quite a few wanted him around. The Giants had the 4-3 personnel in place and could have added to it.

Besides a free agent spending spree resulting in an 11-5 record which was derailed by a boat trip, they’ve been a mess since 2011.

I think it’s a collaborative effort. Betcher came in and he was one of the first jettisoned.... Well, we know how that ended for Bettcher. Just an overall blunder on the Giants part. I put most of the blame on our prehistoric GM. He’s a football lifer, he should know talent when he sees it. If he can’t veto a player being released, then he’s worthless.

If a coach says someone is a bad fit for the team I'd rather the guy be either traded or what not GM and coaching staff have to be on the same page I didn't agree with it as Okwara is athletic enough to be a hybrid Edge /LEO backer in a LEO hybrid 4/3(which we ran under Spags But that's not my call

You don't think the coaching staff had any thing to do with players getting cut? I think it’s a collaborative effort. Me too. Just trying to figure why it's seemingly all blamed on DG here. Multiple coaching staffs over the past years have not helped, and he doesn't make those decisions. How do you pick the right players for a "scheme" when you have 3 HCs in 5 years? Don't get me wrong, I didn't like the DG hire and his record is mixed at best. But I'm convinced the bigger problem with this team is the owners.

Now the D is a 3-4 base so like I said.......Oh well. The 4-3 3-4 thing is a BS cover for stupid personnel decisions. The Giants even under Bettcher played plenty of snaps where 4 guys had their hand in the dirt. Now with Graham they are even more diverse. Honestly it seemed and sometimes still seems that Gettleman was purging the roster of the prior regimes players simply for the sake of purging.

And the HCs that were there during the supposed purge didn't object to him getting rid of these great players?

I think at a minimum Okwara, Kennard and JPP were all players we could have used and who would have been productive/would still be productive. Okwara was an up and coming guy and I was really surprised they let him go considering how cheap he was. Looking back now I’m even more convinced of this. Especially considering who they brought in on defence to replace them. Ogletree? Barwin? Golden? I was more ok with letting JPP go at the time but in hindsight I believe he should have been kept.

I'm not giving DG a pass, far from it. The LW situation alone was idiotic, IMO. But the idea that all the issues with this team are on DG, or that he should have known players who were cut would succeed elsewhere, or he just wanted to cut everyone a previous GM drafted are just silly. Also the Giants GM is not the "CEO" of the team, as has been suggested in other posts. The owners are partly responsible for the fact that DG had to deal with multiple HC's and coordinators schemes during his tenure. And they are responsible for hiring him too.

If Gettleman was letting James Bettcher make personnel decisions for him that tells you everything you need to know. Gettleman referenced multiple times he was changing the culture in the lockerroom when asked about these players. He did not improve the team and got rid of some good players (some young) in the process

Got it. Has DG done anything right? If so why did he make that decision?
