Cant help but remember this: I was trying to think of an analogy to help express my thoughts, thanks for the Kerri shrug video. A somewhat good analogy would be comparing Biles dropping out to Dominic Moceanu's vault performance just before Shrug's. Moceanu had the opportunity and had the skill to post a score high enough such that Shrug's vault wouldn't have mattered, but she didn't have what it took. We didn't applaud Moceanu for that vault, did we feel bad for her? Sure, but there's nothing to applaud.

I feel for her, although the timing is very bad..
Yeah I think she should have toughed it out, but keep in mind these are amateurs competing and don't have much support other than their sponsors. The professionals they are compared to are getting paid to be tough physically and mentally. They are not.
I am disappointed but I will not kill her for doing what she did..Some people are just whacked in their reactions

I had a feeling something crazy was going to happen with her after seeing her in U.S. qualifiers. The pressure is something an athlete has to overcome in order to win. She overcame that in the past, but not this time. There's nothing to applaud about the situation, in my opinion. And of course she waited until she was actually AT the Olympic games....keeping someone else from qualifying.
But despite her difficulty....she's going to work through all her pain and compete in the individual events.
What a brave soul.

She has a net worth of $10MM. ALL of it from being a gymnast.

It has to be tough on her but she is neither brave nor a coward IMO. She just choked and broke down. She is in a different country. Lots to consider. It's a shame it's being so publicized. And eventually politicized I'm sure. Let her move on. She better not try to capitalize off of this herself though otherwise my opinions might change.

Well to be fair she did drop out of the individual all around.

If she wants to opt out as she has, that is her right. It doesn't make her a bad person in an way. But this notion that it's some kind of "heroic" act seems silly to me.
She was happy to collect all that endorsement money leading up to the Olympics. And she waited until the Olympics actually started.

Well to be fair she did drop out of the individual all around. This is true. The individual All Round is a grueling competition where one Gold medal is awarded. The individual events can bring 4 medals.

So let's be honest here...for virtually my entire life, athletes were more commodities than people. You were a linebacker, we expected to see you out here on a Sunday unless your wife died or your child was having surgery, and that 2nd one was marginal.
I knew not a thing about LT's inner demons, and it never occurred to me to care. Go out there and unleash havoc...period, end of story.
Not sure how effective it would have been, but I would have expected a player who was hurting emotionally to rub some dirt on it and get back out there and perform.

I see both sides on this. Mental health is a serious issue and if she quit because of the mental stress its understandable. Personally I believe people that are thinking of quitting should power through, because if they win its the best feeling in the world to over come the stress and anxiety. She'll be regretting this the rest of her life imo.
Now, if she's backing out because she didn't do well then thats some baby shit. Unfortunately thats how this whole thing looks

I remember when I was in little league, I was pitching in the local world series circuit. It was a 3-2 game into the final inning. I went 6 innings and was still going strong striking out the first 2 hitters in that final inning (although Im sure they helped chasing some pitches). When I got 2 outs, it hit me. 1 out away. Probably because the crowd reminded me. Chants from both sides got loud. I got nervous. Walked the next kid on 4 pitches. Not even close. Coach came out and looked at me, and asked if I had it in me to get one more out. I shook my head yes while looking down at the mound. He grabbed the bill of my cap, pulled my head up, and said "You are God damned right you do. Finish them up!"
A few pitches later I got the next kid to hit a can of corn to 3rd base.
That was probably the most pressure I could remember being in as an athlete, and I played a ton of sports after that. I was 11. I remember it like it was yesterday. Butterflies, nerves, sweating, nose running. eyes watering, heart racing. Thinking about my teammates and friends and family there watching. Had to get my composure for that last out. I felt like I beat my mental stress for sports that day. It was all mental (with a little physical fatigue).
I don't know why this reminded me of that story. I guess mental toughness and facing adversity. I could have easily backed down when I lost control with that walk. Coach had someone ready to get that last out.
Haven't thought about that day in a long time. Good memories.
Now that I know Simone is filthy rich already, Im less inclined to defend her move. Funny how that works.

Never implied that she was a hero. Actually the opposite. Just trying to make light of it. Most people's reactions are just way out there

That aside you did say directly that these are amateur athletes....Right?
It's that claim that I am taking exception to....because it's nonsense.

it used to be that you lost your amateur standing if you took money for your performance, apparently not any more...

You're welcome.
What I don't understand is that while she works out her mental health issues, she's still competing in the individual events.

Anxiety and expectations can be bad combination. It can create a world of scattered thought processes under the surface. To find relief from that in extreme cases has caused people to take their own life. I feel for her. I would rather her dropout to protect her mental well being than compete without focus.

Apparently the mental health issues only manifest in team events. She is perfectly fine in the individual events...
Just imagine we had a player like that (switching genders and sports) in the NFL and begging off during the playoffs, what would the fan reaction be like?

Are you sure she is not an amateur? She still may be

Holy **** some of you are harsh.
As it turns out, she's been taking ADHD medicine, Ritalin, since she was a child. It's illegal in Japan. She had to stop taking her meds and it messed her up.
She also had to get special permission in all her other competitions through her career to be able to take the drug and legally compete.
If you still think she should be demonized, you have no idea what you're talking about.
