Promising group of playmakers. Lionel Manual and Byron Williams I think were rookies Bobby Johnson I think was in his 2nd year... Mowatt was a rookie
That group had the potential to be as devastating of a WR group in that era as there has been.. That offense was explosive and balanced,an ahead of its time option route based attack that teams had fits with that year (4000k in the air in 1984 when nobody did it tells you everything) And they had a balanced good running game (Carpenter and Morris )
Alas...injuries took this unit apart as fast as it appeared Manuel never resched his potential (should have been a household name as a 70 catch 1000 yard guy for a long period..Madden actually in a few games compared him to Cliff Branch) Williams I assume went into the abyss after injuries... Johnson was OK but probably at best a complimentary type piece
Mowatt with Bavaro though....those 2 in a 12 healthy...we saw what that looked like December and January of 1986/87
Cam you imagine a 12 with Bavaro,Mowatt,Manuel and Williams for a fee years at peak health and their running game ? With that defense?

Yeah as 1984 really was how that the team was getting together and in the having on the chemistry of the team and what was going to be a very good team under Parcells.

I watched the 49er playoff game in 87 yesterday.. Rice fumbling a TD on a slant and Lott dropping an easy INT on the 5 yard line. That score could've been so different at the half maybe they don't throw that pass where Montana got blown up.

We could have faced the football Gods that season, and wiped the floor with them. We beat the logos off Washington and the 49ers helmets in the playoffs that season.
