Daniel Jones’ college coach saw Giants rise coming long before it happened
PHILADELPHIA — Daniel Jones now carries a team and a dream in his hands into the belly of a beast of a place where football muggings cheered on by a merciless antagonistic crowd have become commonplace for the New York Football Giants across the last nine seasons. These aren’t the Vikings, these are the No. 1 seed Eagles who will be trying to sweep the Giants into next season, which means that Jones should not be expected to throw for 301 yards and rush for 78 more on Saturday night. So the question Giants fans ask is this one: What can Daniel Jones do for an encore? Eli Manning, following his first playoff win in Tampa on his way to Super Bowl XLII, said: “It’s a great feeling, but you can’t just be content with this. You have to win the first one to keep this going. It’s about keeping this going further in the playoffs.” Now it is Daniel Jones cast as lead Road Warrior. Perhaps it is too much to ask, perhaps it is not, for the quarterback the franchise and the fan base have seen grow up from Danny Boy into Dan The Mann, but Giants fans afflicted with Saturday Night Fever will ask him nevertheless: Be Eli Manning beating Tony Romo in the 2007 Divisional Round. Manning (12-18, 163 yards, 2 TDs) upset the Cowboys, 21-17, at Texas Stadium. Be Eli Manning beating Aaron Rodgers in the 2011 Divisional Round. Manning (21-33, 330 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT) upset Rodgers, 37-20, at wind-chilled Lambeau Field.
Daniel Jones will try to upset Jalen Hurts and silence the most hostile crowd he has ever encountered.
He has to get the ball out of his hands in the face of a raging pass rush and make one good decision after the next and use his legs when Saquon Barkley isn’t using his and be better than Hurts, whether Hurts, who has a sprained right shoulder, is less of a running threat than he has been or not, and especially if the game is there to be won in the fourth quarter.
He is playing like any sixth pick of the NFL draft should. Forgive Brian Daboll if he looked at Jones against the Vikings and saw Josh Allen. Daniel Jones is not Josh Allen.
Cutcliffe, now special assistant to the commissioner for football relations at the SEC, likes to tell the story of when he challenged the manhood of the freshman Daniel Jones.
“He’s not gonna be real vocal about getting tough, you kinda know if you’re around Daniel, you know the look. I’m not gonna tell you what I said, but it was pretty brutal, OK?” Cutcliffe said with a chuckle. “It’s just kind of a football thing. His eyes — I could tell he was ready to hit me. And he came that close. And what I did, I turned around and grinned, ’cause it was exactly the response I wanted to get. And he went out and played as good a football as you could possibly play. We come back and won the ballgame.”
Wait, there’s more.
“And the other part of it is,” Cutcliffe said, “is I’ve seen him play with a fractured rib. He never missed a beat. I had to convince him to get down some. I’ve seen him play with a clavicle break. Both of those happened to him at Duke. I couldn’t believe, and our medical people, they cleared him, but they said it’s just not gonna work. I got pictures of both X-rays still on my phone got own purposes, just to never forget how tough Daniel Jones is.” No. 8 is enough.
David Cutcliffe coached Jones at Duke. When Jones was drafted, Cutcliffe compared him to both Eli and Peyton Manning.
“I did in the regards of preparation and knowledge of the game and a hunger to get better,” Cutcliffe said. “You can’t compare people until they are on even playing fields, but I have had all three in college, and so absolutely, his work ethic, and his focus, and you find that out as a coach with the kinda questions they ask on the first workday of the week for the next opponent.
“And yes, he’s that kinda accurate, and that kinda fast-twitch thinker. He’s a brilliant guy, just like Peyton and Eli are brilliant. I don’t think people really understand sometimes what I mean when I say brilliant. Their minds could have allowed them to be anything or do anything. And then all three are tough guys.”
Jones used his legs as a weapon in college as well. “He was phenomenal in college, gaining big yards, and big runs. He’s really a fast athlete, and quick,” Cutcliffe said.
Cutcliffe is asked for the one intangible trait that gets teammates to follow Daniel Jones. “He’s genuine,” Cutcliffe said. “How many people in your life do you know that are truly genuine that you can count on, and what they say and what they do are the same things?”
Jones persevered through it all until Daboll arrived and changed everything for him.
“If you just sit back and watch him be a great teammate, it’s a beautiful sight,” Cutcliffe said. “And you can tell those guys around him are responding to that.”
Cutcliffe is proud of his former quarterback, who will cash in on a new contract as worthy successor to Eli Manning. “He’s earned it,” Cutcliffe said. “This is one of the things I like to say — if it’s not the long way it’s the wrong way. I think he’s earned it and proven himself through some tough times. You cover the Giants, you know what the personnel issues were around him.
“He’s earned it.”
Cutcliffe will be at the Linc on Saturday night.
“I love the Jones family … it’s as if I’ve got a family member,” Cutcliffe said.
Giants fans who booed Daniel Jones on Draft Day have adopted him.
“Between Eli and Daniel, I qualify as a pretty damn good Giants fan, you know?” Cutcliffe said.
He wouldn’t want anyone else to quarterback his team now.

I get more confident the closer we get to kickoff!! You sure it's not the booze? I was about to start a game day post then saw this. I lol’ed once I saw this comment after the heart to heart myself and Game and the rest of the board had yesterday. That’s a question you should be asking me, not Game . Like I told Game, I’m more nervous about the cows winning but I’m starting to get a hair antsy about todays game. I wasn’t surprised nor looking forward to beating MN but this is a different animal. There’s only two teams left that have a lot to prove in the playoffs IMO, us and the Jags. I think the Jags suck and I’m still not sold on us, a win today would go a long ways. So many different dynamics involved. Beating the same team 3x, Hurts injury, both teams have significant players back that didn’t play in either of the first two games, shegals struggled against teams like the Colts and Warsh, we barely beat most teams….I’m glad pretty much every team left in the playoffs (minus Purdy) is fully healthy. No excuses. I wish kickoff was at noon. This is going to be a looooooooooong 14 hours. Go Giants!

Morning fools. Today’s the day. I don’t even want to leave the house for fear of punching somebody. Lol, always nice to hear from you buddy! I’m just trying to stay somewhat sober and conscious until kickoff….and, like you, not have to deal with society. Most people suck. Just need to run a few quick errands (or the wife does) for booze and game day vittles and I’m set. I plan on wearing out my recliner today.

I told Game yesterday, no matter what happens I’m happy with as far as we got. I’m not saying I won’t be swearing at the team, and possibly some of you as my wife is swearing at me for being on my ipad and not talking to her during the game, but I can handle this potential loss. This team has far exceeded my expectations. Now if we were the eagles and lost, a team that started off so hot and is the 1st or 2nd best team on paper, then I would lose my shit 10 fold. We’re like the Bad News Bears, the original BNB, not the newer movie bullshit with Billy Bob. No on expected this team to be here, including 99% of us, and we’re still the underdogs, rightfully so IMO. Ideally, a perfect weekend would be a win for us and SF. A miserable weekend would be a cowboys win no matter what happens today.

I think the Cowboys are going to beat the 49ers.

At least I love Philly as a city, heathens yes and dirty, but awesome city nonetheless. DFW just f’in blows all around. No character other than being flat, cookie cutter neighborhoods and pretentious assholes. It’s a concrete jungle with snobby aholes. The people of DFW remind me of the cowboys. Country club, entitled, arrogant pieces of f’in shit. I can at least respect Philly’s blue collar passion, although they’re f’in disgusting heathens who act like primates. Actually, primates have more sense than they do, seriously. Ever see a monkey eat shit? I haven’t but I have seen a Philly fan eat horse shit. They had to lube up the lamp posts before the SB to try and prevent the carnage they knew would happen for gods sake. ok….I’ll stop now. Thanks for getting me so riled up, it’s only 6 am here. My wife will appreciate you shortly.

I was born in White Plains and lived in Westchester County until I was 8. I specifically remembered my parents and grandparents taking me to the Giants summer training camp in ~1986-87 at Pace University when I was a kid. My dad was transferred to DFW with JC Penney when they moved their HQ there in 1988, so I’ve been stuck in this shit hole since. All of my family, not many left alive, are from the NY/NJ/MA area. I still get back every now and then but there’s not many left. As soon as I can retire I’m headed to the mountains, anywhere but here. F’in hate this dump and always have. Put it this way, I had enough common sense when I was 14 years old that I VOLUNTEERED to go to military school because a) thought it would be fun and b) hated DFW so much that I was looking for any way to get out. Ironically I ended up working for the same f’in city I grew up in and am still there, hence part of why I like to drink. Pretty cool story, eh?

I was leaving NJ for Las Vegas when I got sucked into staying because I landed a job with the county and had a pension. Well public employee pension in NJ is slowly but surely taking a shit so I left my job and withdrew the money that was mine before it disappeared. So, now I’m out a possible pension and trying to figure out what’s next. But it’s better than losing what was mine because some asshole politician decides to go to the casino with my money.

Going to be a really long Saturday waiting for kickoff. As most on the board I did not expect playoffs this year and certainly ecstatic with last week's win. We are playing with house money, but I want that effing money in our pockets after tonight! Nothing would be better than shutting up the Eagle fans in Central Jersey (yes there is a central jersey) well that is until next week and shutting up the Cowboy fans nationwide. Let's Go Big Blue!

Vegas is one place I’ll never go and weirdly I don’t want to. I have waaaay to many vices and Sin City would bring out the worst in me so I’ve always declined vacations, bachelor parties, etc. Luckily my wife doesn’t gamble and has much more self control than I do so she has no urge to go. I know what ya mean about the “guvment” jobs. I work for my city as well, we actually have a great retirement but I also work with quite a few people that worked for the actual city of Dallas and they got fuuuuuuuucked a few yeas ago, most people bailed and now they can barely hire anyone.

I dont know how you take it man. When I am south of NJs mason dixon line and you start seeing Eagles gear in the bars and stores it makes me ill. This game is personal for sure.

Two of my nephews have started doing a sports podcast and they had their dad and me on last night. They more we talked about the NYGs the more confident I became!! The Eagles are frauds!! Easiest schedule on the league!!...lol Getting very pumped!! I've been trying to go back to sleep for the past 2 hours and can’t. It will be the same tomorrow before the stoopid cows game. I wish kick off were at noon, let’s get this shit going and over with so I can get on with my mundane life. saw where you are orig from Westchester. Spent some up there working at the airport. When I saw your posts I was like...damn he's up early!! The older I get the earlier I wake up. I get a 5 hours sleep and I m good to good.
