As I mentioned previously in this thread, the run blocking is there at times, it just needs to be more consistent. That will come with more reps as the lineman and Barkley start to anticipate/learn how each other reads/executes the play.
Here in Shot 1 are some great examples of the oline run blocking well.

Again, I think that goes with most teams though. Even the ones with good OLs get bottled up a fair amount. But I'm ot saying our OL is good either.

Ouch. SQB definitely has left yards on the field. His vision isnt the best out there. Got to see the field better.

What we are missing here is what the actual run play design/call was for those particular run plays. It really is dependent on the coaches to explain to Barkley that his decision making does not have to be reliant on the play call if he sees something that could work better with a simple adjustment sometimes.
I sure do hope the coaches are showing Barkley the same film and pointing out the alternative options he had on some of the negative plays O'Hara pointed out.
If I were the coach I'd say, hey I may call the run play type but you can get off the script if your vision tells you there would be a better option based on the blocking you are receiving. It is sort of like a WR option route but just like option routes that approach to the running game has to be coached into the player until they have a feel or even trust to do it.
Vision doesn't have to be just about do you have 20/20 eye sight or not. It is something a RB can improve with more alertness of his surroundings which is very coachable.
All world or not Barkley is a rookie and the inconsistency of the O-line may be causing a lack of patience or even panic. This will change with time and experience running behind this O-line if particularly by some miracle it becomes more consistent (which is unlikely to be any time soon). This applies to all future O-lines that he will run behind in his career.
so he should use his instincts and vision. Of course plays are designed for a "hole to open here" so to speak but this I have to believe is job one of any RB on most hand offs no? Dont get me wrong I dig the kid and think he is extremely talented but I cant imagine he has to be told this? The problem is that for his whole life he was the best and fastest player on the field until now. This means that his instincts are to bounce it out where he used to be able to out run everyone. The play where they have 6 in the box was the most disappointing since a player has to know to go right at them between the tackles in this situation but he obviously doesn't at this point.

Sure, but it was the same thing in college for him so its not really surprising. There were some Penn St videos I saw of him completely ignoring holes right in front of him to bounce it outside.

Barkley needs to trust the run Eli putting him in the right running spots when they’re called. Take those gift 4-5 yards when the o line gives them to you. I’m pretty sure you can nitpick any 2 plays with the primary RB. But behind this line you have to take anything the line gives you because they’re so rare.
Playing against one of the best run defenses in the league tonight. Just take those yards if they’re there and score thru the air.

Makes you wonder how much missing the preseason is playing into this. I always believed that vision wasn't a trait that can be taught and hopefully he is an outlier and can be.

He should know to do it yes but as a rookie he may need some reinforcement from the coaching staff that it is okay to do more of it. He has had contact immediately on most of his runs. He may just need some encouragement and reminding. That is on the coaching staff. I don't think it is a vision issue, I think it is a trust issue. Trusting his vision, his instincts and yes his O-line and QB. The coaching and film study must help him build that trust. I'd even actually show him some film of Leveon Bell. He is the epitome of a RB who is patient, trusts his instincts and trusts the other offensive players around him.

Hopefully though he has instincts to see the holes up the gut so to speak. So far this season he's doing ok I think. Almost 600 yards of total offense and 4.3 per carry. Lets see how he progresses and matures into a complete NFL player.

Make the linemen who screw up run wind sprints until they stop screwing up.
