Chargers had excellent offers for Hebert from at least 2 teams. If his own college coach were that sold on him he could have further built his team with draft capital and had McCarthy. He didn’t do that. Which tells me that most people’s belief that he was an absolute stretch at 6 was accurate. So glad we got Nabers.

100%
Never been so relieved by a pick in my life. On the other hand the thought (even at least 1 mock) of us taking Penix at 6 wasn't that far off lol. Again so glad we didn't.

I love the potential of Penix but our turf with our line represents the least optimal health scenario for that young man. Just keeping it real. Glad for him though. I hope he turns out to be great, the letter he penned to teams was awesome.

Nobody in their right mind is going to take a prospect over a proven NFL player. Set your team back by developing a new QB? There was no chance the Chargers were doing that. The fanbase would've revolted.

Crazy what things go on behind the scenes at the draft!

I think the best he ever played in a game was against us so we have a skewed view.

Riskiest early pick in the draft.
If they thought he was worth the pick, I’m certain they would have taken him.

In 4 years, Herbert averages over 28 TD's and over 4000 yds per season. And has a career comp of 66%. That's as good as anyone. All that's keeping the Chargers from competing for championships has been good coaching and a supporting cast. But Herbert is everything you could want in a QB.

That’s an easy answer. Most people it will make sense too. Since this type of question was generated by you I’m not gonna count you in that group. Herbert is proven in the NFL - JJ proven at the college level. Just because Harbaugh “thinks” JJ will be successful in the NFL why trade a ultra talented experienced QB who now has more protection and weapons for a talented QB who has proven nothing at the NFL level. That scenario never came up more than likely it’s kinda bizarre. Unless for some reason you’re searching for justifying the Malik pick over JJ. But that would be silly. If Nabers doesn’t go Beckham Diva and shows more effort than he did in the bowl game I think he will be better than Beckham. We’ll see.

He does have good traits, but there are a ton of open questions.

His entire game film reel spans the amount of time it takes to eat a Twinkie.

We will find out in a few years if passing on McCarthy was a good thing, or we will be a bunch of very unhappy fans again! or

I believe he’ll answer any of your tons of questions this season. 😉

We will find out in a few years if passing on McCarthy was a good thing, or we will be a bunch of very unhappy fans again! or I believe we will find out this season. JJ was hoping to be picked by the Vikes. He was very adamant about the right before the draft. The head coach said “ I want to coach that kid “ prior to the draft. The table is set. JJ now has protection - great WR’s - a very good TE a very good RB. He has every opportunity to strut his stuff this season. He is NFL ready. Even though I wanted us to draft him I’m very happy he didn’t get stuck with us. We pale in comparison to the Vikes set up. He won’t reach his potential obviously this year but he will make a statement the Vikes made the right choice. If that happens and DJ leads us nowhere again and JJ out plays Maye or even plays just as good heads will roll. The kid was dumped in the Giants lap and they pushed him off. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

There is a reason no team moved up to get him.

I like JJ, but the Vikes had him as their guy so much that they tried to trade up to 3 to get Maye themselves. Not saying teams don't have multiple guys they like sometimes, but let's not pretend like it was JJ or nothing from both sides.

Also, the Chargers were never ever going to trade Herbert. Which is why all those offers were turned down immediately.
Not an indictment on JJ McCarthy at all.

Barkley tore his ACL on natural grass.
