The New York Giants kicked off their undrafted free agent class with a UCLA defensive back that was a turnover machine in 2023.
“Former UCLA defensive back Alex Johnson will sign with the New York Giants,” relayed UCLA reporter James H. Williams after the conclusion of the NFL draft. The Talkin’ Giants podcast quickly added that Johnson registered five interceptions in 2023 during a repost.
This news was also confirmed by KPRC2 NFL insider Aaron Wilson, who provided key context on this UDFA addition. “UCLA DB Alex Johnson signed with [the] Giants for $115,000 total guaranteed per a source,” he informed.
To explain, most undrafted prospects aren’t guaranteed any money, let alone a six-figure agreement. Those that do get paid are typically bid on by multiple suitors.
Johnson falls under that description, and the Giants must have really wanted him if they shelled out $115,000 just to get him in the building.
New Giants DB Alex Johnson Led Pac-12 in Interceptions Amid Breakout 2023 Campaign
As mentioned in the open, Johnson’s 2023 campaign included five interceptions and a fumble recovery for a touchdown against Caleb Williams’ USC Trojans (pictured above). This was easily a career season for the 6-foot-1, 190-pound defensive back.
At his pro day, Johnson ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash with a 37-inch vertical and a 10-foot and seven inches broad jump. He ran a 7.00-second three-cone drill.
That interception total was also tied for sixth highest in the entire NCAA and “was the most by a Bruin player since 2009.”

I hope you’re right and the 32 teams that passed on him 7 times a piece are wrong.

They also paid a good contract to sign ford-Wheaton last year and he didn’t seem to show much before his injury.
Hope the kid pans out but i have way more faith in the guys already on our roster.
I really think the addition of Brian Burns will make the biggest impact on our secondary out of anything else we’ve done this offseason.

A turnover machine that 32 teams passed on all 7 rounds. Maybe he’s an apple turnover machine.

big money for the kid peanuts for an NFL franchise worth the shot at developing him Phillips was tough physical CB in college also there will be competition Philips and McCloud have inside outside flex so does Flott if he finds a spot on the practice squad great.

Thought this was about Andru Phillips. He is not a turnover machine but he looks sticky in coverage. Sometimes gems are found undrafted, time will tell.

I had 500 plyers ranked. He did not make the cut. 101 were DBs (Corner+ Safety) One 5th of the entire draft pool. I did my diligence. IDK. DBs are either have it or they do not. Most don't. There were 36 Corners taken and 19 corners taken. A total of 55 DBs. Believe me if was in any form of good. He would have been drafted.
Sorry to be the party pooper.
We should have snatched Beau Brade ahead of the Ravens as an UDFA. I had him ranked 129 and 23rd best DB.
My postmortem had 38 players go undrafted in the top 257 out of the 500 players I had ranked. Only 2 in the top 150 went undrafted. Not too bad. Last year I had close to 80 go undrafted. My stats agistments are getting better.

Beavers was playing well the previous year before the injury. Devito wasn't a train wreck.

Who knows. According to the article, it's unusual to give undrafted players guaranteed money, and that they were probably bidding against other teams. So I guess he must have some upside.

Al Bundy scored 4 TDs in one game. Spare tire Dixon missed that game.. He was in court on a silly manslaughter charge. Some poor running back tried to run him over. All that was left of him was flesh and organs.

Only 30% of drafted players last more than 2 years in the league.
I can't imagine what the percentage is of UDFA turning into "diamonds"

Tony Romo Kurt Warrner Priest Holmes Wes Welker Antonio Gates Brian Waters Cameron Wake Victor Cruz James Harrison London Fletcher Adam Vinatieri Jeff Feagles When you average 15 per team after the draft over 30 years (the cap era). That is an average of 14,400 UDFA's in the league for that time period. 12 /14,400 = 0.00086 or 0.09% it is 1 out of every 1200. (average) You can get some serviceable players as UDFA. But that "how did this guy go undrafted" player. Is a rare find.
