Mike Florio (who I happen to think is a total schmuck) posted an article about this subject yesterday. In it he concluded:
"First, fans just want the players to play. During a holdout, it’s the player who is the one directly responsible for keeping the player from playing. So the fans pressure the player to “honor his contract,” not the team to give him a new one.
Second, the fans don’t care about the massive wealth differential between owners and players. From the perspective of the fans, they’re all rich. However, the owners are dramatically richer, earning billions collectively every year while also holding 100 percent of the equity in the teams. And the owners can do it indefinitely. The players have a limited window to make what they can before the exit the game with bodies and brains that may eventually betray them.
Third, it’s would be foolish to not consider the racial component, especially against the backdrop of the ongoing anthem debate. Some (many) white fans surely resent (consciously or not) the fact that African-American men parlay God-given physical skills into the kind of money and fame that the average white person never will enjoy, no matter how hard he or she works. So when African-American players try to get more money that some (many) white fans think they don’t really deserve, those fans get even more upset, reasoning that the players who already have more than they should should simply be happy with what they’re getting."
Of course I can only speak for myself, but when MLB and the NHL shut down their sports, I did not blame one side. I blamed them both.
In fact, after the NHL's 2nd lock out in less than 10 years, that was it for me. I no longer follow the sport and it happened to be my 2nd favorite sport behind football. And of course according to our little yenta/provocateur Florio, it must be because I hate those damn articulate Canadians!
The truth is, and this goes back to the protests - I just want to enjoy the game. And if I cannot, I will find something else to do.
I have no interest in knowing how much money the owners or the players are making, and I have no interest in listening to anyone who wants to pit one side against the other.
I just want to watch the ****in game.

For whatever reason I do frequent that site for NFL headlines and it's become apparent this guy is always looking to stir things ups.
Now I fully understand how someone who's involved with the game in that capacity has become detached from the game itself, but what I don't understand is why he's always looking to divide people.

Because dividing a population will always be a means to achieve an objective. The division is a purposeful way to disguise intent.

As George Young said a long time ago, it's always about money.

I wasn’t clear in the way I said it. I meant most of us fans feel the way you do not the writer. The writer is just trying to get attention with the same made up B.S. that has become more pervasive these days. These athletes have been provided free education before entering the NFL, and should be able to get well paying work after, simply based on the fame the league then provided. If not for the salary cap and the resulting limitations on what other personnel the team can acquire or keep, once a certain player gets that big constraining contract, it would be a moot point for most of us. Like these billionaires... there is no cap on their earnings, and what they amass has no effect on my life's enjoyment. But I do want to see a complete team to root for, not a patch work assemblage of league castoffs that rely on a single or few high contract players.

Bravo well said Rosey I agree that Florio is a tool ... he is a media shining star though compared to Pat Leonard of the Daily News. That guy is a complete embarrassment.

When is the last time a Giant actually held out and missed a real game? I'm not mad at somebody for trying to get paid, why would I be? I would think most people want what they consider fair value for their services/talents. This loses me when it suggests that a white dude is upset because of some us vs. them mindframe and not because he just wants to see the best players for his favorite team on the field. The racial component? I'm pretty sure it's the "I hate seeing my favorite team lose or anything that increases the likelihood of it" component.

Internet 101. When you start a thread about a story found elsewhere on the web a quote is fine but a link to the original source is nice.
