As the month leading up to training camp is one of the quietest and most uneventful times for football news and discussion it propelled me to start this thread for some giants nostalgia.
So everyone always talks about their favorite teams and memories and this typically entails championship teams (obviously) or teams that should've won it all but didn't (such as 1989 and 2008) but I always wonder; what are some of your favorite more obscure teams? Is there a team that you look back on fondly or sentimentally even though they might've not been so great? Just one of those classic scrappy teams, or teams that had transitional years (such as one which propelled them to do better the following year. I know it's an odd thought but I figured it would be more interesting than talking about 2007 or 1986 for the millionth time.
For me it would be both the 2005 and 2006 seasons. I feel that they played such a huge role in that 2007 victory. 2005 was exciting as Tiki was entering the best two seasons of his career and was amazing to watch with that rebuilt offensive line. It was the first season of big plays from Manning to Burress. Shockey had a great year. Strahan and Osi were totally dominant. Pierce was a great surprise. They had some dominant games as well as that great comeback against Denver. But the secondary was inconsistent and the linebackers (aside from the great Nick Greisen and Carlos Emmons) were as well especially as injuries ravaged them going into the playoffs. That season gave a lot of hope and enthusiasm towards the future after two really bad seasons.
2006 started off great. I still remember the first Manning bowl with that horrible pass interference call towards the end of the fourth quarter against (the great) Tim Carter. Then they had the comeback against the Eagles. Kiwanuka playing really good as a rookie and then making that laughably bad play against the Titans. The season had a lot of good moments in the first half though and although they ended 2-6, it's the biggest catalyst to the super bowl win in 2007.
What are some of yours? I'm sure some of the older Giants fans will obviously have more interesting input than myself who is younger and only became an avid watcher in 2002.

Similar to your point, I would say the 84 and 85 team are right up there at the top. Those teams were building towards our eventual Super Bowl win and 17-2 season.

The 81 team. It was the first glimmer of hope and ended the drought.

The 2002 Giants. Hated the ending, but it was a pretty cool season. Loved the emergence of a kid named Jeremy Shockey as a rookie. It all started in preseason with him trucking a Colts defender and taking off down the sideline. That team had a legitimate shot if they hadn't blown the playoff game in SF in epic fashion. It didn't end well, but I was such a huge Shockey fan, dude was all heart.

Shockey was great to watch that year. That was the first season I started watching every game, or every game I could.

The 81 team. It was the first glimmer of hope and ended the drought. Me too. The 81 team was when the era of embarrassment ended.
Making the playoffs for the first time in my 15 years as a Giants fan was an incredible experience. Then beating the Eagles in the playoff game......Priceless.
That team will always have a special place for me.

Yes but what a heartbreak ending...not to mention the refs missing the holding call at the end of regulation Yeah, at the time that call was maddening. But in retrospect now I see that without that loss and the ensuing terrible season those great years from 2005-2008 most likely don't happen, nor does 2011. I would take that heartbreaking loss every time if I had knowing what the future held.

1970. Lost first 3 games, missed playoffs by 1 game. Fran Tarkenton, Ron Johnson, real good defensively. This was the year that my blood turned Blue !
