On Mayfield's td throw up the seam to the TE, the Giants blitzed Collins and the MLB was responsible for covering the TE. But in trying to disguise the defensive coverage, the MLB never shifted over. The TE bellied out a little to get some horizontal separation, then bent back to the post as Mayfield lobbed the ball up the middle of the field.
A play like that should be an interception for the free safety, but instead Thompson was late getting to the ball and he even missed the tackle. The next morning I watched Undisputed and Shannon Sharpe confirmed what I saw. He said if that were a top safety, that ball would have been picked.
If our MLB can't cover and our FS can't make the easy plays and we have an anemic passrush, the middle of the field will open all season long. Think about it, if the Giants play zone but don't get any pressure, the completions will come. However, if the Giants blitz to get pressure but the linebackers can't cover and the free safety isn't smart, then the opposing tight ends, running backs and slot receivers will have a field day.
I am worried.

I wouldn't be surprised if Thompson doesn't make the 53.

Yes and schematically NFL offences are evolving / have evolved strongly towards attack the middle via seam threats etc. So this is something they will face constantly. Quickest way up the field is through the middle.
Secondary needs to have A+ communication and play extremely smart or they will get torched

Tyrod Taylor threw that TD pass. I don’t think that play is going to work against elite pass catching TE. I hope we never see that again tbh. Olgretree is going to get wrecked.

On the bright side Engram and Barkley will be doing this to the other team as well it seems,so for once we can do to other teams what has been done to us for seemingly 25 years

The middle of the Giants defense has been weak for almost 30 years

I noticed Landon being sent often, but it was just the first game for these guys in the new defense so we'll have to see how our defense progresses.
Let's not forget that Riley is slotted as the starter but he missed the game due to a hamstring.

When is the last time the middle of the field wasn't weak in our D? I could line up at TE for our opponents and get 10 catches for 100 yards....

Coach you should be ,with the hybrid tight ends playing now free safety's have to cover ground and get on top of those routes, not many backers are going to cover Njoku, each team in our division has one ,only the cowboys have an unknown being that whitten has called it quits

With all the rules skewed in the Os favor with all the protection the QB/WRs get now, the days of ever seeing a defense allow under 200 will never happen again in our lifetime. Nowadays allowing under 275 is grounds for celebration. Vikes were #1 D while allowing 252 pts. When's the last time a D allowed under 200pts in a season? Ravens in 2000 allowed 165pts. TB allowed 196 in 02'. And now with this new BS helmet rule, watch how many offensive drives will be given extra chances when on 3rd & 12, a flag will be thrown that gives a team a fresh set of downs.

When was the last time the middle of the field was stout for the Giants? This has been happening for years now.

I am worried. Difference between JR and Gettlemen when it came to shit LBs is that JR typically paid league minimum. Gettlemen traded for a guy that routinely misses tackles and can’t cover in Ogletree. Big name LB tho, glad we’re giving him $6MM. Savvy move by the Rams as I’ve said all off season
