So I watched the Eagles Falcons game from beginning to end. Here is some random thoughts:
1. RPO is the latest idiotic buzzword that is going to take over play-by-play. Michaels was calling every play action pass an RPO. In the future I would only like to hear this term coming from a coach or player’s mouth, or in print.
2. The catch rule fiascos of past years has actually infected the brains of NFL officials like a virus. Despite there supposed to be a more common sense approach to determining what is a catch, they blew an easy one on the Julio play. Then they blew it again on review.
3. ... HOWEVER, despite it being the wrong call, I do consider it a major PLUS that the refs seem much more loathe to overturn a call on the field. Reviews should be quick and if they can’t be figured out quickly then you go with the call on the field.
4. The helmet hit rule didn’t show up. Which either means it’s only going to be called in blatantly obvious situations...or it’s going to show up at a critical time where it should not.
5. Opening games are going to be very sloppy. The popular narrative in this is that it’s because starters don’t play enough in the ore-season...I don’t really buy that. Personally I feel it’s more to do with the limitations and reductions in practice. Some of the flags were procedural and technique related which stems from not being drilled enough. Players are no longer able to perfect things. Can’t coach like Lombardi anymore.
6. ...following on that last point, coaches that think they’re going to be able to win with superior execution are going to lose a lot of games. Because players can’t practice the chances of being able to rely on great execution all the time are going to blow up in your face. Clever scheming is necessary to put your players in position to succeed. This isn’t a playcalling issue but a play DESIGN issue and philosophy issue. This is why coaches like Sarkisian are getting railroaded right now. And why a guy like MacAdoo got fired...and guys like McCarthy are underachieving.
7. That green zone thing has got to go. I’m not even sure what it is supposed to be indicating? Isn’t it the same information the yellow line gives us? I don’t get it.
8. I cancelled my cable TV and purchased a subscription to DAZN as this is how game pass is provided in Canada. It worked great during the game and also gives me access to NFL network. So far so good with this service and very cheap.
