Interesting insight in the draft process, sounds more collaborative than I thought.
Sounds like Garrett was a big reason why Andrew Thomas was selected. Bring back Garrett as GM? Why is the guy who wrote the article acting like Thomas is a bust?
Pat Shurmur pushed to draft DeAndre Baker.

Also, it is behind a paywall for everything but these are REALLY well done. Very deep and tons in there.
I never pay for these but had a friend on twitter point this article(s) out. Well worth it for good journalism.

Man. So part 1 talks about how when Gettlemen came in he changed EVERYTHING. Took out the old scouting system and told these old scouts to use his method. One that they were never trained for.
Completely wild.

LOL how did it get so bad so fast that in itself is a dumb statement, being it was bad for 9 or 10 years Gettlemen has been here almost 4. I read this earlier and there is legit shit in it but really, lol sounds like Marc Ross wrote this one sorry this train was coming off the tracks as soon as 2008 -2009 as far the drafts that destroyed the franchise and they continued right through DGs tenure..

"Into the next offseason, one source recalls McAdoo being infatuated with a young quarterback out of Texas Tech named Patrick Mahomes. McAdoo saw Brett Favre in Mahomes and loved everything he witnessed at the QB’s pro day. When asked about him in one of the final pre-draft meetings, with Mara present, one source remembers McAdoo saying “I want to get my f------g hands on him.” Picks. Players. Whatever it took. Of course, Mahomes was a difficult prospect for all scouts to read. You may remember Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula trying, and failing, to get his evaluators to believe. Skepticism was the theme everywhere. Scouts across the league viewed him as a second- or third-rounder. And, here, such a suggestion was blasphemy. The Giants were riding and dying with Eli, baby, so the Giants never even considered doing exactly what the Kansas City Chiefs did in trading up for Mahomes. They were blind to the possibility of drafting any quarterback in the first round. “They were still on the ‘Eli has something left,’” one ex-scout says. “Eli? We were about five years late on that deal.”

"Trading down obviously would’ve been a swell idea — remember, this was a 3-13 team with holes everywhere — but Gettleman’s mind wasn’t exactly open to the possibility.
“People call you and they want the second pick in the draft for a bag of donuts, a hot pretzel and a hot dog. Go away, leave me alone, I ain’t got time to screw around.”
Reliving his favorite play on film, Gettleman explained how Barkley once faced two linebackers in his face with a safety coming down and, like magic, strung together three moves to take it to the house. He had to hit rewind a few times, too, “and say to myself I know I wasn’t drinking.”
Know this, too: Gettleman didn’t go rogue. The Giants’ brass was mesmerized.
At the Combine, cameras captured Chris Pettit — the team’s director of college scouting — shaking Barkley’s hand with a gleam in his eye. That gleam, one ex-scout says, was very real. Internally, Pettit never hid his love for the running back. Almost as if this was a high school crush, he’d tell people Barkley was so rare, so spectacular that it sincerely did not matter who was on the Giants’ offensive line. Barkley could move mountains.
Too many important people at the top of the organization “got blinded by that talent,” one ex-scout says."

"Voices like Steve Devine, the team’s Midwest scout who watched both Barkley and Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson extensively. He was adamant that the Giants should draft Nelson — heck, right at No. 2. Devine told the group that Nelson would change the whole demeanor of the Giants’ offensive line to accomplish exactly what Gettleman promised Day 1: a return to “big-boy football.” The Giants passed. The Colts took Nelson at No. 6. Nelson has been a first team All-Pro every single season.
At this rate, a gold jacket is absolutely in his future.
“All of the pretty stuff Saquon was doing,” one ex-scout says, “overwhelmed people.”

They cleaned out the scouting department pretty good this is a disgruntled guy more then likely. I still have my money on Ross the colossal failure he was, Gettlemen makes it easy tho, I have to say 2017 Gettlemen was not here for the Pat Mahomes pass nor the worst year we have ever had in 2017, he just didn't fix it and he deserves to get canned. Why would they keep the same scouting system that did not work from about 2008 to 2017. Yet probably the guy who wrote this and all of us here Want a complete over haul with new outside voice that will change everything and thats fine with me the. Problem here Gettlemn didn't change it enough, other problem is the league passed the Giants by since 2008 their drafts have sucked more then not a good draft was getting 1 good player and maybe 1 average one. DG deserves to go for sure but man this has been a decade long problem they need to change everything.

No OL, no receivers and eventually lost the locker room. Still, the guy wanted Mahomes. What should have been.

"Most observers were surprised to hear the general manager go on and on about Jones and, frankly, so was his own personnel staff. Throughout the lead-up to the draft, the Giants’ college scouts had zero clue what Gettleman thought of Jones. The inner circle running the team wanted to keep their opinions close to the vest so the scouts — the same ones who should’ve been heard one year prior — had no clue Gettleman was in “full-bloom love.”
“Dave never said anything,” said one scout. “I was wondering, ‘What he’s feeling? What he’s thinking?’”
A GM triple-padlocking such intel isn’t a novel concept. Paranoia runs high in the silly season that is the NFL Draft. Last spring, no scouts and no coaches on staff had a clue Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch were drafting Trey Lance No. 3 overall. What made this strange, however, was that Gettleman typically rambled on and on about draft prospects. He’s a man with stories to tell. And on Jones? Mum was the word. Never mind the fact that this was a decision bound to affect the livelihoods of everyone in the building. Dissenting opinions should be heard. Heated debate should be had. Daniel Jones’ game should be dissected like a frog in ninth grade biology class with anything the GM says about the quarterback robustly challenged.
The Giants whipped around the room, everyone said their piece and Gettleman was vaguer than vague.
“Dave was like, ‘I’m still doing some work. I’m still working on him. But I’m listening to all you guys. I hear what you’re saying but I’m still doing work,’” one ex-scout recalls. “It stayed like that. I was like, ‘Man! I wonder what he feels.’ I never got to hear that until he talked after we picked him.
“Generally, it’s always an inclusive process. That was one where, ‘I’ll keep this one to the vest, until the time comes.’”
Dave's own scouts didn't even know liked Jones. Didn't even discuss it with them, What an idiot

Thanks Garrett for Thomas over Wirfs:
"There was heavy interest in Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs internally but the offensive coordinator on new head coach Joe Judge’s staff — former Cowboys head man Jason Garrett — was unbelievably vocal in support of Thomas. Per one source, Garrett was “in love with Thomas” and told everyone the tackle reminded him of the eight-time Pro Bowler he coached for nearly a decade in Dallas: Tyron Smith. Every time Thomas’ name came up, Garrett went off on a “10-minute spiel” about the tackle and insisted that Thomas was more developed than Wirfs, even though Wirfs did hail from the same school (Iowa) that had produced the likes of Marshal Yanda, Brandon Scherff, Riley Reiff and Bryan Bulaga. Arguably no head coach in college football prepares linemen for the NFL like Kirk Ferentz.
Gettleman liked Thomas, too. But it was Garrett who pushed the pick over the top"

Massive, however, far from the only one I read it but he took over a huge mess. I laugh because how did it get so bad so fast no it took 10 full years of stupid and stupider if there is such thing. One thing I question is how much training does a scout need I remember they said we are changing the criteria to more instinctive football players I mean that does not sound hard to me and it worked quite well in Carolina. I agree with you the guy has f#$@ed up and needs to go but getting a story from an un named X employee is like shooting fish in barrel. I liked the inner workings parts and agree on DG but this shit show has been on tour for years, if it were only 4 drafts of Gettlemens it would be a much easier fix right now.
