Eli could have taken that shot with no problem.

Totally legal, perfectly timed and legit. Not his fault Joe was a thin QB under 200lbs.

I too thought the hit was legal. I thought the ground is what banged up his shoulder. That game is one of my favorite Giant memories.
Who knows today ? If it was Brady it would definitely be a penalty.

Back then, you get praise from your teammates. Now? Jim Burt would be charged with assault and awaiting a bail hearing. It’s not the hit that took him out, it’s how his head hit the turf like a basketball. Montana took some of the most vicious shots of his life from the Giants. Just four years after that hit, Leonard Marshall nearly killed him.

Would this play be legal today? See slow motion at time 1:27 Looks like a clean hit to me. I think he'd get a flag today simply because the QB got hurt. I don't think it was dirty; it was a bangbang play.

Clean hit. At the time it looked like he was hit by a car.

It is a clean hit however it would be called as a penalty today because he actually touched the QB after he threw the ball.

wasn't late wasn't helmet to helmet
clean hit and the hard turf is what did Joe in. He banged his head big time.

Back in the day where you used to make those kind of tackles. Now it would be about suspensions and/or fines.

You can't even touch a QBs head today without losing 15 yards. Plus the viewing technology has improved so much.
That play would never happen without a 15 yard penalty today.

Best part of that was how much Burt looked like Donald on the center with his hands ... he even was late off the snap.

Would this play be legal today? See slow motion at time 1:27 nope, shoulder hit Burt's shoulder never touched him. Burt hit/shoved him with both hands at his chest, right under Montana's right armpit. He could have just rolled over him instead of the push. There's no way for Burt to pull up in time. Montana's throwing arm follow-through comes down on Burt's shoulder. So, Burt damned near hit him at release. I think in today's NFL the ref's would be about 50-50 on calling this..

Burt never touches his head. He shoves/hits Montana right under his right armpit. Burt's face was under the armpit, too. Take the head out of this equation... it's either late, or not. I say he couldn't stop, so it's legal.

It's a legal clean hit from a Giants defensive lineman. So, yes, that would get a flag now.

Burt lead w/ his helmet. No doubt today that's a PF Take a look at the pics. He gets him under his throwing shoulder with his hands and push's Montana back , Montana falls(hard ) on his non throwing shoulder no Helmet contact in the initial contact at all.

In today's game you have to lead with your hands and arms, not the helmet. No one is saying it should have been a penalty then, the rules have changed

Q: Describe the Jim Burt hit that knocked you out of the game in a 49-3 loss to the Giants in the divisional round of the playoffs in the 1986 season.
A: It wasn’t a bad hit, it was just like my head hit the ground, and that was it. I just remember having a pain in my head. I don’t remember if I could see or not at first, but it wasn’t a bad hit at all … that turf just knocked me out.
