USFL to eliminate chains, measure first downs with chip in ball and yellow line on TV Link"When it’s time to measure for a first down in the USFL, the officials will call for a high-tech solution in place of the decidedly low-tech 10-yard chains thathave been used in football for a century. The USFL played a preseason game on Friday night that included the debut of its new first down measuring system, which combines a chip in every football and the yellow first-down line that fans are accustomed to seeing on TV. Video of its use during the preseason game was accompanied by a claim from the USFL that the upstart league has “First down measurements that are more accurate than ever. That, however, may not be accurate. Although it undeniably looks cool on TV to see an image of the football and an image of the line to gain — reminiscent of the way replay is used in tennis — the reality is that this kind of ball tracking technology isn’t precise enough to guarantee that first down calls will be correct."Now a first down can be hacked

The idea of the spotting of the football has always been pretty ridiculous when it comes down to it's precise location.

The idea of the spotting of the football has always been pretty ridiculous when it comes down to it's precise location. It's as accurate as umpires in baseball calling balls and strikes. Lots of room for error. I'd like to see robo umps and this robotic LOS line once the tech is perfected.

A terrible ump ruins the game.

Should, the NFL decide , to use this technology. Will , rain or snow effect the signal ? Also, what will be the backup plan , should something does goes wrong .

My guess is they will defer to NY to sort it out (or make things up).
And if they happen to screw the pooch in the playoffs; they'll undoubtedly overact and make a total mess of things the following year.

The ball has to receive a GPS signal. It has to broadcast a RF, Bluetooth or Z wave .......signal. That signal can be scanned, jammed and hacked to be rebroadcasted. You can buy the devices needed on Amazon.

The GPS is a different signal. Your phone uses it. I do not think the GPS is accurate enough for what they are trying to do (10 feet at best) or 3.08 yards. That precision is military GPS channels. Probably why they need the Yellow Line on the TV .

Why would you need extend to send signal to space to see if a chip in a football passed a sensor on the field? You add complexity which introduces vulnerabilities and increases cost dramatically. A self contained RFID system is simple, secure and more than cable of doing it. Like the tags on clothes. Once it passes the sensor is all you need.

Which means the NFL cannot use that technology as long a Belichick is coach.

Starting to resemble college football..a ton of read option style offense and the Generals bring in a passing qb on obvious passing plays

Trend so far Rosters only are 38 guys per team and defenses are tiring out by mid 3rd quarter..and will only get worse the hotter it gets..
So those of you that prefer watching running type offense will probably like this league because tackling is non existent by the 4th
Also what's cool is the helmet cam on the RBs...some guy from "Philly"(remember every game is in Birmingham Al)just went house and you saw his perspective
