this was the way Rich Suebert did it first building then practicing then getting some game snaps. think because Richie was TE in college they let him run in the Jumbo packages to start. could see gates doing it the same way. Then returning next year full time.

From the moment he made the team as an UDFA I have pulled for this kid. When I saw him fill in better than the starters he replaced at various O line positions, my appreciation grew. Nick Gates is part of whats right about the NFL and I wish him a full recovery. Since he still wants to play I hope that works out for him.

It's really good news that he's made strides the last few months, but I wouldn't count on him for this season at all. Hell the fact that he can practice even in a limited fashion is great for him, that was one nasty injury!!

Then they needed him to start at RT, and everyone was clamoring about him never taking a snap at that before. But he surprised, and then again, and again...

The fact he is running is an enormous step. I always thought it was multiple steps taken very quickly.

He was a tackle in college but still he played left I believe. I think Dave Diehl talk to him and several OLs about the importance of being able to play multiple positions Gates is a 5 tool guy now he can play every spot from outside to center. I wanted him to have a chance to start at RT I do think he fit better inside tho. I think if he can get healthy and strong enough maybe by October earliest November he might start getting his feet wet at that swing tackle spot.

He's been competent at each position they've tried him at - but really took to being a physical Center, and I 'd prefer Neal and Thomas starting at Tackle.

Good to hear. I was unfortunately at that game and sitting in the end where the injury occurred. The stadium wouldn't show a reply and my friends/family at home were texting asking what happened because I guess TV wasn't showing it either. It was a pretty gruesome looking. Thought for sure it was career ending (might still be) but glad to hear he's doing everything he can to work his way back. As someone else said the injury was really a kick to the gut. The o-line (except for Thomas) never really got on track last season.

He really needs to take this year off and get his health in order. Coming back to soon could ruin his career even more.

So cringe worthy,
love the guy for giving it everything he's got. Yet at same time, I do not to see him with a cripplng injury again if he is able to work his way all the way back to playing again.
Tough situation

Gates is at Camp. Glad he will be around the team, facility and coaches as he continues with rehab.

At some point he’s either going to have to be added to the active roster or shut down for the season. The optimal scenario would be to get decent play at Center in 2022, so it’s not an issue. Let Gates continue to rehab/practice then re-evaluate next year.

The fact he is running is an enormous step. I used to think so.... While I was watching the game I said to my sons that the 20 yard line seemed at least six inches higher than all the other yard lines. And then this happened…😎

great news, but I'm still not expecting him to contribute this season. Same here. There is no sense to move faster with him. Give it the entire season to keep progressing.

He surprised me at every turn. Didn't expect zilch from him as he was UDFA but was pleased to see him do very well as a replacement tackle. When they put him at center I was a bit upset b/c I thought he should have stayed at tackle. He filled in nicely there too. I still think he's better at tackle but we're more than set there. I hope his career isn't ended with the injury but not too hopeful. Hopefully he surprises again.

If any player can come back from that injury, it’s him.
