Yesterday watching the Met game they were talking about the anniversary of the 16 inning game Juan Marichal of the Giants and Warren Spahn of the Braves.
The game went 16 innings the Giants won 1-0. But the story of July 2nd 60 years ago was both Marichal and Spahn pitched complete games. Marichal threw 226 pitches 16 innings and Spahn threw 201 pitches 15.1 innings.
My how things have changed in 60 years, lol. If you were pitching good there was no need to take you out.
P.S. Oh and by the way both pitchers pitched their next turn in the rotation and it was a 4 man rotation on 3 days rest. FYI- Newcombe once pitched both games of a Double Header.

Different times back then.. That’s when men were men.. Warren Spahn was 42 years old in that game. Now players who are in their forties are managers. They were built much different in that era. They didn’t have the resources and knowledge todays players have. Every player now has a scouting report from their tendencies to when they take a shit. Then it was a beer and let’s go..

Satchel Paige pitched both games of a doubleheader in 1932. What made the feat special. In the second game. He pitched a no hitter. That is bad ass.
