I’ve been debating this with a coworker all week. I would have to say Kevin Costner. Thoughts?

In this debate, do you consider how good the athlete was, or is it strictly based on how good of an actor they are?
Kevin Costner/Ed O'Neil would be far on one side of that spectrum.
Michael Jordan/ Peyton Manning is the extreme other side.
Seems you would want someone in the middle like a Jason Statham who was a professional diver and a pretty good action movie star.
I bet I ruined Statham for some...

You mean best actor playing a sports athlete role. Not an actual athlete acting. Costner is definitely up there. And I think he did play baseball in college but not much.

I would probably vote for DeNiro in Raging Bull, or Caan in Brian Song.

Anthony Perkins was the worst athlete, ever, in Fear Strikes out... the story of Red Sox OF Jimmy Piersall. Perkins didn't belong on a baseball field. He was also a horrible basketball player in Tall Story. I expect none of you ever saw either of those late 50's, early '60's films. He just wasn't smooth and naturally coordinated enough to be an athlete... Bad Casting. Mark Wahlberg did a good job in Invincible. Keanu was good in The Replacements. Geena Davis was very good as a catcher in A League of their own. Madonna was decent, too, in that same movie. I like Mastt Damon, but he didn't have a good enough, fluid swing to be considered a scratch golfer in Bagger Vance. The actor who played Bobby Jones in Bagger Vance had a gorgeous golf swing, just like the real Bobby Jones. Costner was believable as a good golfer in Tin Cup. Will Smith was OK as Ali.

Interested to see Jamie Foxx as Tyson. My other personal favorite was Tom Berringer as Jake Taylor in Major League. He killed it.

Foxx better fill out and develop a muscular body to make me believe that. A movie about Tyson? I didn't know. I live in a bubble. LOL. I hope it's good. I like Jaime. I hope he's up for this gig.

LeBron is a pretty good actor on the court. Come to think of it any soccer player.
I always liked Denzel in Remember the Titans.

Now this is before many of you, before your time. But Burt Lancaster was without a doubt the best actor and big name actor as a athlete. He originally was a trapeze and tight rope performer in the circus as an athlete.
Was a heart throb as well with the blonde hair, blue eyes and white teeth. Plus the muscular athletic build. And he could act.
When he portrayed Jim Thorpe he did all the decathlon events himself. Hurdles, pole vault, high jump, shot put, discuss, etc. In those hoaky Robin Hood type movies that was him doing all the stunts swinging on the iron rods from the castles. His personal friend who was mute was in most of his movies. He was also an exceptional athlete with Burt when he was young.
My sister knew him quite well she worked with his neice at a law firm in NYC. Burt used to take them to lunch quite a bit when he came to NY.
Johnny Weismuller won Olympic Gold twice as a swimmer lousy actor but was a star as he portrayed Tarzan.

I did see both of those Anthony Perkins movies. And I seen Jimmy Piersall play with both Boston and Cleveland in CF. He was a very good baseball player, he was a .300 hitter and a top defensive CF. Seen him on TV beat the crap out of those 2 drunks that ran out of the stands in CF after him at Yankee Stadium. They were apparently yelling at one another all game. They used to show dopey fans run out of stands in those days.
