I’m all for paying him but still at some point the guy has to grow up.

Pay him with an injury/playing time clause of some sort.

Pay him with an injury/playing time clause of some sort. I'm thinking that might make him more of a target, possibly something for defenders to get into his head about. I doubt the mention of that idea would create any enticement to stay on this team.

To this point, the guy is a little overrated. he needs to grow up, stay healthy and prove himself. Bingo! You win.

Seems easy. we have the franchise tag as leverage.
Just seems smart to make sure he's still the guy he was.
Let him play this year on his current contact, but take out a large insurance policy for him to protect him against injury. I don’t know if the premium on that policy would count against the cap. Doubt there is a insurance policy possible There have been a few college players who have one and maybe the player can obtain one yet the team won't. The insurance the team has is only the bonus is guaranteed.
