Eli Manning is the startergiantswire.usatoday.com/2019/08/17/new-york-giants-pat-shurmur-again-makes-it-clear-eli-manning-starting-quarterback/New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur keeps saying it, but for some reason or another, people just refuse to listen: Eli Manning is the team’s starting quarterback and everyone on the building is on board with that .
“John [Mara] owns the team, right? We’re on the same page. There is really not much more to say. I think I’ve been saying it all along. I just get a sense once in a while that when I answer those questions nobody believes me. Well you heard it from the owner,” Shurmur told reporters on Friday night.
And no one does believe him. Rather, personal interpretations — interpretations that are quite obviously wrong — continue to be projected onto Shurmur with some going as far as to create this conspiracy theory that Shurmur is being handcuffed into playing Manning.
From the moment he interviewed with the Giants for their then-vacant head coaching position, Shurmur has been on the Eli Manning bandwagon. He remained on that bandwagon in 2018, return to conductors booth here in 2019 and has given Manning literally every single first-team rep since spring.
Still, we somehow find ourselves in this broken record position where a controversial headline is needed and since Shurmur is not playing along, it’s being forced.
Eli Manning is the starting quarterback of the New York Giants and it’s beyond obvious that that’s exactly how Shurmur wants. It’s exactly how co-owner John Mara wants it and it’s exactly how general manager Dave Gettleman wants it. It’s as clear as day for anyone willing to pay attention.
And should the time come where Shurmur wants to make a change at quarterback, that’s his decision alone to make, so says Mara.
“At the end of the day, it’s going to be a decision by the head coach as to when and if Daniel ends up playing this year,” Mara said.
The Giants, and especially Shurmur, have made this whole thing crystal clear, but that narrative doesn’t sell. A quarterback competition and a head coach hamstrung by the owner does no matter how far detached from reality it actually is, so that’s what we’re going to be force-fed.
In the end however, Shurmur and Shurmur alone will make the decision to put No. 10 under center in Week 1 and beyond.

This is strictly my opinion and logic in it. He has at least 4 -5 more seasons. The Gaints' will not force DJ into a new HC. Why would you draft a QB then put him in an awkward position to have to reestablish himself as the next franchise QB. Pat seems to be a good fit for DJ. There is no logic in changing that, The new coach may want his own QB. Anyone whos wants DJ to fail. Wish for a new HC. That is what the talking heads want.

I'm still in NY Is this what they are calling journalism these days? I don't know how anyone can take an article seriously with so many grammatical errors in it. I had to reread several lines just to get what he's trying to say. Shame on this writer and it's editor. For the sake of total transparency, I am completely hung over right now.

wow...like this is ground breaking news??. Who doesnt think this is the scenario??
Eli starts with a short to very short leash. By that I mean he will get 4 to 5 games of poor performance before he is pulled.
In the best case scenario for the team Eli plays very well and they make the playoffs. Eli retires or goes elsewhere and Jones steps in next season.
IMO......I would rather have Jones in at some point this season other than mop up. But that means they are not doing well but I want to this kid in sooner rather than later because he is like a new toy

I don't think anyone has argued that Eli ISN'T the starting QB...........right now. He started the last 2 games.
The KEY to this is that this could change at any point during the season. Even game 1.

Let me ask you guys, if the Giants are fully committed on playing Eli Manning and thinking they are contenders this season, then wouldnt the better option to help eli and the 2019 Giants have been to not take a player at 6 who adds zero value to the 2019 team? Wouldnt you add a pass rusher who adds immediate value to helping the 2019 team be as successful as possible?

This is their mind set. They are giving Eli his due...again.....as fans we have to just deal with it

That is fabricated and it keeps being parroted . Not once has anyone inside the organization stated that. There is no logic in that thinking If he is on a short leash as some believe. It can be interpreted as lack of faith in the starting QB .If the HC has any questioning about the QBs abilities. The HC should not start him period . If he does, He is not HC material. Not at any time , even a leak coming out of the FO has there been a question about Eli's abilities.

I admit that is my interpretation and its not based on anything ( other than my take on what ever the talk between DG and Eli was) I read but that mid set does not show a lack of confidence in Eli at all. Its just a game plan for the season. If Eli plays great and the offense produces then ride it. If he doesnt then for the first time in 15 seasons they have their legit shot at the next franchise QB.

Eli and DJ's play will determine when that happens. Could not be any clearer. I am not implying anything.

I also agree that the clock starts ticking on Shurmer in 2020,that this year and last year ars basicly mulligans

Its a HC with a new QB who will get the next shot at being the franchise QB. If Eli does poorly and Shurmur keeps trotting him out there that is being a "good HC"? Jones will get his shot.......that in itself puts some type of "leash" on Eli

Makes sense to me to give Eli the reins as starting QB. He can do it. Jones can only get better with a year observing and learning.
If the NYG get way ahead put Jones in for a few series late in the game. Hopefully this can happen.
As far as Shurmur, he is a good coach and given good talent can win. Can he win with lousy talent? No, and neither can any other coach.
The NYG are one of the most stable franchises in the NFL. As long as Shurmur maintains discipline and the respect of the players he will remain.

I have been completely clear in my statements about what I think. Lose the chip when you read them or don't bother reading them.

So I could conclude since you are fair minded. You are on board with a change if Eli play bad. You would be equally on broad with an extension if he plays well. Because as you say it all about how the Qb plays?

But, I don't have much confidence in Eli based on the last few years of check down Charlie and taking dives. It remains to be seen. But there won't be any extensions no matter how good Eli plays. This is his last year in a Giants uniform And again, if you are going to attach the 2 game theory to me, please quote where I said that. Thank you.
