5 takeaways from NY Giants preseason opener, including how Davis Webb can rebound ART STAPLETON | NORTH JERSEY RECORD | 2 hours ago EAST RUTHERFORD — Giants coach Pat Shurmur was asked if he had a halftime message for quarterback Davis Webb, who struggled upon replacing Eli Manning in the first quarter. "I just tried to settle him down, that’s all," Shurmur said. Some were already writing Webb's football obit on social media before halftime, but just remember he had not played in a game since last August. Things did not go particularly well for him, but he admitted earlier this week in advance of Thursday's preseason opener against the Browns that he'd have to guard against trying to do too much. His performance was uneven at the start, but he finally seemed to settle down when getting running back Wayne Gallman involved in the passing game. Webb said after the game he was too amped up and wished he had a few throws back. But he's confident he'll be ready to go next week, first in joint practices against the Lions and then in the second preseason game in Detroit. To me, he just looked like he was trying too hard, and looked bad doing it. I'm not going to judge him too harsh just yet.

The strange thing for me is that I remember him looking much more comfortable last year as a rookie. Let's see how games 2, 3 and 4 go before hitting the panic button.

No doubt, he can't do that much and get away with it. just joking here, but had that been Eli...they all would have been picks, he never gets away with throws like that, lol!

The kid has not played much other than practice and last preseason so we shouldn't be too surprised

I get he hasnt played a lot, but honestly it was cringe worthy watching some of those passes. Baker Mayfield took his first live NFL snaps and looked pretty damn good.
I honestly thought Lauletta looked more poised than Webb. I hope he shows more than that moving forward...

Those that do make it many of those are only “ok”. Both Webb and Lauretta are mid round picks. The odds are they won’t make it. Not counting on them to be the next franchise. But.....you neva know.

I was hoping Webb was going to look better. But most of his reads were right. See if he can dial his arm in

He also overthrew to wide open guys that probably would of been TDs. On both plays he had plenty of time with little or no pressure and just missed the throws

Don't fade, brother. I've somehow found a way to enjoy it like before without letting the bad parts upset me as much. To be honest though, gut wrenching regular season losses still hurt some.

Only half??? I hope you washed it down with a bottle of wine at least. I did have 3 beers before that, but most times I'll take half. All this started because of sleeping issues. If I just crack my eyes like @ 1:AM in the morning, start thinking about things then boom, I'm up.

I have a few sleeping issues and anxiety crap sometimes. I just found the xanax helps with the NY issues too, lol

No panic here, but last year there was absolutely no pressure on him because he knew he would never play. This year he is the primary backup to a 37 year old QB. Totally different situation. If he has another game like Thursday my bet is they will be looking for a FA backup.

The DL looks great against the run. I liked the play calling because our back up QB's missed some opportunities that Eli would have capitalized on.
Coverage is a major red flag.

I agree with that but geez, after15 years of football a few of which were on a big college stage, calling a pre-season game "pressure" is disheartening. We do need a capable backup QB and he didn't look like that guy on Thursday. On to the next game.

Our 2 biggest weapons , OBJ/SB played a combined 2 series, all by SB. I'm pretty sure that when they play all 4 qts, defenses won't look so great against them. I just wanna get thru the pre-season with no major injuries to our starters, we could go 0-4 for all I care. Being a healthy team in 2018 is gonna be the key to our chance at making it to the playoffs. Giants went 5-0 a few yrs ago in the pre-season, how'd that work out for us in the reg season?

Said things actually slowed down for him during the game.

I believe the entire line needs to hold/finish their blocks better.

The game wasn't enjoyable to watch but was very easy to move on from. Every year the team is a work in progress. Let's see how they look this Friday and then we can freak out even more.
