He's not the status quo. That alone makes him and everyone else who isn't Pat Shurmur the perfect candidate. That will all change once a HC is hired....then it will be the wrong choice.

He completely turned around 2 college football programs that were in the dumps. I'm Baylor's case it was right after a bad scandal. Says a lot about the kind of leader he is to get guys to buy in and have success in a short period of time with both programs. He also apparently impressed in his year with the Giants as the 2nd Oline coach.

What has he done at Baylor that has made him this elite must have coaching target? Nothing, he appears to be a good coach, that is a good COLLEGE coach.....there is nothing to suggest he would be good in the NFL, but then again nothing to say he wouldn’t be. Hiring him would be very risky.

What has he done at Baylor that has made him this elite must have coaching target? He networked well and kissed the right butts. He became a buddy with someone within the Giants org. He was an assistant on the Giants 7-8 years ago.

And he was a crapshoot when he was stolen from the Jets Not in my mind. He did better with a horrid Browns organization than he ever gets credit for. The way it all went down in the Spring of 1991 makes me want to puke every time I think about it and will haunt the Giants organization to the end of eternity. I for one will never get over it. Thank goodness Coughlin beat him twice in the Super Bowl for us or else how the circumstances played out back then would be totally unbearable.

Schiano did wonders with a Rutgers program that was the worst in CFB for many years...how'd that work out with the Bucs?

He turned two teams around by recruiting really well. Two thoughts, how does that help in the nfl where you cant recruit. Second, how much of a deep dive will the giants do into his recruiting background? College recruiting is a shady business. Are we sure he is scandal free? I just dont get what is special about him and how it translates to the nfl.

Pat Shurmur had NFL coaching experience when he was hired. How'd that work out? Shurmur got on a sinking ship and built a culture and locker-room a year after the team imploded. Jones overachieved in Shurmur's system. I did not expect many wins from this team, Shurmur exceeded my expectations and I was not in favor of the hire.

It's sad that 4 wins is considered "many wins"...

Schiano did wonders with a Rutgers program that was the worst in CFB for many years...how'd that work out with the Bucs? I'm not saying it's foolproof, I'm just staying why people are interested in the guy. It makes sense. He may fail miserably, he may be the next Jim Harbaugh as it relates to the NFL. I like the guy, he's young, he's changed programs and he does have a year of NFL experience. By all accounts he seems like a leader of men. No one ever talked about the culture shifts Pat Shurmur spearheaded or the transformations of people because it's clearly not what his strengths are. He's a likable guy that really knows his xs and os. Matt Rhule would be something different to me, so I'm all for it and I like guys that succeed exceptionally with less talent than other places. He's done that at Baylor and Temple. It's one of the reasons I thought D. Jones may have a shot in the NFL. Did well without a whole lot of talent around him.

I think he's done a great job bringing Jones into the NFL....but I think he's hit his ceiling in his ability to take Jones any further. Time to up his game. It is also a fair point that he is not a good HC when it comes to game management. It's been said a lot here and I agree.....he's an OC. Not a HC. And I wouldn't be pissed off if he ended up back on this staff as such.

Hiring him would be very risky. Who would be a "non-risky" hire? Someone with NFL experience.....Rhule has one year NFL experience.......hiring him would be very risky. Less risk would be to hire someone with more NFL experience. The Giants will never hire this guy and they shouldn’t. Let someone else take that gamble. Making good management decisions does require some risk taking, but this would be way over that.

What has he done at Baylor that has made him this elite must have coaching target? He has brought two college programs from 1 or 2 win teams to double digit win teams in just 3 years each. That's nice, I will say, but it's college...I need more. I want college coaches who have been head coach for many years with a long history of success, failure and success again. Why failure then success again? Because that shows their ability and willingness to step back and learn new or start over. Would like to see a coach from from the NFL with YEARS of experience at OC or DC or best, HC...not just a flash in the pan level of success (that's how get MacaDoo). Mike McCarthy would be a huge get for this team but I am betting Dallas is going to gun for him regardless of what the rumor mill will say.
