After watching Judge and being totally completely impressed, I'm left with ONE message that he said, and I'm not sure I'm saying it correctly. The players need be shown HOW to do something, and WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE that you want them to do, but most importantly WHY you want them to do it. I think we've been missing teachers in our locker room. There are probably a million coaches but only a few that can teach. "There are no fancy schemes.." I think most of us think all you need is X's and O's smarts and that's enough. Maybe that explains all the coaching failures out there. That's what I got out of it. Shit, I want to go back to school to be a teacher now. My favorite line however was "I don't care if you're young or old, a free agent or where you were drafted, if someone outworks you then they'll see the field." We have seen that time and again that the Patriots get the most out of their players. BB must be an amazing teacher. I wish this guy all the luck in the world. And I pray if he wants to bench a high draft pick Gettleman doesn't get in his ear. You hired him, let him drive the cart.

I'm in my student teaching program right now to get my degree in education, and I'm going to remember that philosophy in the classroom. Also, let's hope for everyone's sake that a high draft pick doesn't play poor enough to get benched.

That is actually what separates the average leader and the great ones in the military too. General Mattis always talks about "commanders intent". That is the WHY in this case. I used that line a few months back when I got selected to head a department. If your guys don't understand why they are doing something then it is very tough for them to buy into it.
I didn't see this quote, thanks for posting it.

He should run for President this year, no better slogan ever existed "Maddog 2020".

And I pray if he wants to bench a high draft pick Gettleman doesn't get in his ear. You hired him, let him drive the cart. Showing someone how to do something, and what that looks like and what end product that produces is not something new. This is something that you will see with all good coaches, right from coaching children all the way through to coaching men. Some people are better at getting their point across. The thing that Judge said that was impressive to me was that he puts the onus on his coaches to find the way to these lessons to each individual player. As long as that player is there, then it is your job to get him engaged and to make sure he is understanding what you are teaching. Find a way to get through to the individual. In all sports there are schemes that help put you players in a position to do well, and every once in a while someone comes up with a new scheme. No scheme is without weakness though, they all have their strengths. Its about using the players you have and putting together the best scheme that works with your talent and about getting them to buy in, buy all in and just play hard and fast and smart. Then on top of that you need to find someone that is inspirational to the team as a whole. That can manage people one on one, that is credible with the media. That his other coaches and the organisation respect. That has just enough self doubt that he can grow in the role but enough self confidence that he believes in what he is doing. Its a tough gig. Not many humans have the complete skillset.

BB must be an amazing teacher. If he were such an amazing teacher i think he'd have better than a 10% success rate with his coaching tree. Good press conference though. I'm cautiously optimistic. Even the best coaches in the world need talented players though. BB failed in Cleveland his first go around. Gettleman needs to fix the OL and find some defensive talent in FA or the draft or we're going nowhere fast.

New England's success is a combination of factors.
The ownership Front office Belichick Tom Brady
There's a synergy there. Take away any one of those and it might fall apart.

I love that Judge said basically to hold the coaches accountable for teaching the players too. I dont see this guy allowing his secondary to be brutally wide open for years at a time with no adjustments...

In my opinion, is that BB is flexible. He's not stuck to X's and O's or what should and shouldn't be done if such and such happens. He's not stuck to some flow chart. If adversity happens on your team, you adapt. And apparently, it's hard thing to find to find among coaches because they seem to be so rigid and only stick to what they philosophically think is correct.
He's able to take the tools he has and make it work.
Which is why I'd rather hire a coach who took an 0-16 team with 0 talent to be 7-9 and missed the playoffs over a coach who had lots of talent and won the SB.
Mike Tomlin deserves coach of the year for what he did in Pittsburgh.

He knows how to manage it, he knows schemes. He places emphasis on offense, defense and special teams. Most importantly...and Judge mentioned this too...Belicheck finds out what his players do best and allows them to do that. A lot of coaches...in many, many sports...don't. Most coaches plug guys into a system or a position they need them at. And that doesn't really work. Take Ereck Flowers for example. He was NEVER a left tackle. Yet, the Giants kept trotting him out there...only to fail ALL the time. They kept insisting he do something he wasn't good at because they needed him too.

It's a true story written by the CO and it's pretty eye opening.

I think it has more to with year in and year out stability as a Franchise. That is the true measurable key to any organization that has won multiples. The Giants have not had that since they fired TC. We keep skipping the pages and go right to the new chapter. Hopefully they will let the novel play out this time.

I would add "connecting" as part of teaching but maybe all great teachers have to "connect" with their students. I would also add that football smart are a small fraction of what it takes to be a great coach. Look at McAdoo....all we heard from JM was how smart the guy was regarding football BUT he clearly couldn't teach any of it to the coordinators and subsequently the team. I am hoping for something dramatically different from Judge.

I think sometimes when guys are pros and great athletes that there's just too much of a misconception that they don't need to.be taught basics and fundamentals.. being great at those are the platform to being exceptional . The giants have been terrible at developing talent for years now . Our lineman always seem to regress and never get better then go to other teams and become serviceable so maybe the giants really are bad teachers . It will be interesting to see if Joe judge can take our talent and develop it properly .

I concur 99%, the other % is to understand that he is the one driving the boat, not the FO, they just write the checks. Every Sunday I would hear the HC saythesame thing: we will get back to work, clean up the mistakes and get ready for the next opponent. He nevertold us what they had to clean up and how that would be done... never! Well, now we have a guy who will teach or coach the basics of the game they’re playing and explain to his men why they will do it that way. The last 2 HC’s didn’t get it done, let’s see if Joe Judge can. I’ve bought into round One of this 12 rounder. Go get’em Joe.

Amazing that no teachers ever teach students that because they just assume they know how. Perhaps that what he means by fundamentals...not assuming they know the basics. Many players in college get by on their athletic ability alone and never learn good techniques
