Simple as that. It is just like a college coach who gets fired, and then his original recruits have to either transfer or ride the bench for 4 years because the new coach is only going to play his new guys.
Webb was at a disadvantage from the start this year for that sole reason, and now it is more obvious than ever. It had far less to do with his actual talent than people think. He looked great against the Lions, and he was absolutely the answer at #2 this year. Now if Eli goes down, we are screwed.
Good luck to Lauletta trying to throw into the Meadowlands wind come late fall. And don't even get me started with Tanney.
It's funny how Webb was praised all last season by people within the organization. Praised by defensive backs. Praised by receivers. Praised by Eli. Praised leading up to the draft. Praised by people like YA who had often reported on his progress.
This also now says a lot about Shurmur. I thought you could develop QBs, Pat? We had a tall, strong, mobile guy who could make all the plays and just needed some tweaks, and now you cut him and try to spew BS at the presser.
We got rid of an asset this weekend. Plain and simple. And we kept liabilities like Flowers, Apple, etc.

I disagree with your point on Flowers and Apple though. They still have potential and there is no reason to cut either or them at this point. Maybe in the offseason but right now I think they have to continue to give them the opportunity to improve. I just mean that at this point they should be given a shot for at least a few games.

They are also taking an aggressive approach to team building that I can't comment on until I see the results.

And while I'm having difficulty making sense of Webb being released, it's obvious they preferred Lauletta's skill-set over Webb's.
Webb has the arm but is known to panic under pressure. Lauletta is more poised under pressure without the gun for an arm. Webb showed he's a fighter against the Lions but as even he admitted; the receivers made him look good.
I've already brought up the Meadowlands wind in another thread but the reality is this stadium is not nearly as difficult as it was to throw as Giants Stadium.

How did I contradict myself? Please explain. If it's about them being drafted by Reese, then that is not a contradiction. This is about the QB position and Shurmur wants HIS guy. He doesn't want the guy who was here before him. The receivers made him look good against the Lions? He played very well. If you are going to say that, then I guess the receivers have been making Eli look serviceable (which is sad) for the better part of several years now. Kinda goes both ways, no? The wind is absolutely an issue. Look at the Chiefs game from last year. It's the sole reason why we won. Alex Smith couldn't throw the ball ten yards into the wind. There was even a great article that detailed how Eli, punters, and kickers prepare for the wind each week during pregame. Some of you guys need to sift through the BS.

If you're an honest man, you would've said no. I'm sure that's how the GM of every other team would've answered as well. Now take out all the teams who were already satisfied with their backups and weren't pursuing any. Now take out all the teams who could potentially have picked up Webb at #2 but preferred to look elsewhere to find value in guys (at other positions) that would see the field more often this year. Now take into consideration the fact that he hasn't played in a single game yet. Now take into consideration the fact that he has been in the league for less than 2 years, has already learned two playbooks and would now have to learn a third within a week. Pretty easy to see why he wasn't picked up when you use logic.

You made the comment that "the new coach is only going to play his new guys" and ended your posts with "And we kept liabilities like Flowers, Apple, etc."
Here is Webb's comment after the Lions game:
“I’m pretty confident in my ability,” Webb said. “I just think I needed to hit the reset button and kind of figure out how I want to play football. I want to play football at a smooth, calm level, and again, I didn’t play my best game tonight. Guys around me made plays.”
There is no serious wind issue at MetLife like there was at Giants Stadium So while at least we agree that the Giants play in an open air stadium and wind can be factor at times, I'm not about to get upset that we cut Webb and kept Lauletta right now, nor am I going to get upset over Gettleman and Shurmur shaking up this team. We were 3-13 last year after all.

Again, this is about the quarterback position. When it comes to the QB position, the coach or GM wants their guy. Cornerback is less of a concern when it comes to their guy, and also you only have a certain amount of draft picks. Again - this is pretty basic stuff. You can't replace everyone in one year. Either way, Apple and Flowers are larger liabilities to the future of this team than Webb was. Your bolded quote - literally watch any post game interview from any sport and 95% of the time, the guy who played well will say that. It's called being modest and giving the people around you credit. Tom Brady will say that all the time, as will Eli. It's standard practice. You are reading way too far into it. The wind is a huge factor at Metlife, and it was a huge factor at the old stadium. Yes, we were 3-13 last year after all...and we would've been 2-14 if the wind wasn't a huge factor at Metlife.

"NOTORIOUS"??? Hell that is an understatement! Parcel's was known for opening the door at the other end of the stadium when an opposing kicker was trying a field goal, yeah it worked! His defensive coordinator back then learned well. Wonder how many balls were deflated before the 1986 divisional round against the 49ers ?

I don't claim to be able to read people's minds, (ie Gettleman and Shurmur). But we all know that their bottom line, and what will allow them to keep their jobs is winning football games. I can't believe that they would base their personnel decisions on anything other than who they think can best help the team win.

Absolutely true. 86' NFCCG, the winds were absurd in the old Meadowlands. Even from LT and Simms, the MVP of that game was Landetta. I'm certain that part of the design of MetLife was to not allow those winds to be as much of a major factor. Also teams used to accuse the Giants of using the doors in the Meadowlands to affect wind periodically for opponents.

If Webb had the attributes that were valued by Shurmur et. al. and displayed them regularly he might still be on the team. But he did not. He worked hard in class.. but performed inconsistently on the field. He can throw far, but too often without enough accuracy. He processed information too slowly, forcing him to throw hard and thus often lacked 'touch' in the shorter game. He says the right things but flusters under pressure. He is not 'their guy' because he doesn't possess the traits they desire nor are they teachable. Other quarterbacks do.
Pretty easy to see why he wasn't picked up when you use logic.

If he was the obvious answer at #2 for us, why didn't a single other team in the NFL offer him a spot on their 53? Because they figure if we released him there must be something wrong?

Ok for the past 14 years (with one minor hiccup) , the guy that has been hiking the ball on sunday has been Eli Manning. Guess what , this Sunday, who is going to hike the ball? Eli Manning. Why do I care about who holds the clip board. I dont. Do we have a back up? Thats all I care about. The Jags are coming with their full throttle defense. The NYG better be ready including the fans. Last year was the worst year ever. Its time to fight starting this weekend.

They're not idiots. They just wanted their guy, not someone else's. Pretty basic stuff here. the fans also. yeah. they are upset whenever they didn't get their guy? who isn't? we all think we know better. Some of us do LOL Exactly. Forget Webb, I'm still mad we passed on Rosen. And we likely could've traded down and still gotten him, OMG ???
