247sports.com/nfl/new-york-giants/Article/Report-Giants-free-up-cap-space-with-Janoris-Jenkins-contract-121532927 "According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Giants bet on Jenkins being a part of the franchise for longer than just the 2018 season when they converted $4.5 million of Jenkins' base salary into a prorated bonus. The end result of the decision was the Giants creating $3 million in 2018 salary cap space. The move was not as much drive by choice as necessity.
The Giants had just about $2.55 million in salary cap space as of Thursday with the season opener rapidly approaching. The Giants needed to give themselves some breathing room, while also making room to pay the 10-man practice squad, future bonuses paid out, and to sign free agents should the desire arise. In order to do this, they banked on Jenkins keeping up his level of play through the final years of his contract."A great gesture by the Jack Rabbit.

Jenkins proves he is a team player. He didn't take a pay cut though right. Just deferred it essentially.

He got his money and got it earlier. There was only upside to this move for him.

I agree it was an upside for him but he realized it was for the team also. Are you saying; He just did it to do it and not to help free up cash ?

I like Jack Rabbit as a player as well as his personality. I liked him until he quit on the team last year. Hopefully he redeems himself this year I didn't like him quitting on the team either but I will cut him some slack being that McAdoo was probably the reason others quit as well...

He did it because the team said - hey, instead of us paying you 3M (just an example - don't remember the real number) as salary paid out over the 16 week season, what if we just give you that whole amount right now? Who would say no to that? The move of course benefited the team, but a "grand gesture" it was not.

Just deferred it essentially. he kind of helped the Giants and himself, there wasn't much dead money involved if they cut him after this year he is a big cap hit,now they will have to take a hit to get out of his contract so the team might think twice about making him a cap casualty, hopefully he has a great year and they will be not even thinking about parting ways with him.
