1. Closer: 2 years in a row Chapman has let us down. His best only seems to be 101 now, whereas plenty of guys are hitting 100 (all 4 rays pitchers we faced for example except for maybe Anderson can reach 100). Without movement, variety, or better control he's not the same as the guy who used to get in the 103-105 range.
2. Starter: the chronic thorn in this teams side seemingly for decades. They thought they addressed it with the Cole signing but then injuries to Paxton and others, and Tanaka's declining performance put us right back down the hole again. Id keep Paxton, not resign tanaka, and stock up on young arms again, which seems like the way Rays built such a high quality staff on a low budget.
3. Trades: to accomplish 1 & 2 above I think will mean trading key guys - Gary and frazier my top choices. I'd like to keep both but to get something you have to give something too.
4. Boone and Cashman: don't see any way either departs next season, but both need to clean up their analytics act, so to speak. These guys more often than not seem to outsmart themselves, unlike Rays who are impeccable in their decision making process.since boone and Cashman are here to stay, I'd like to see them bring in some more analytics staff and actually give them some power ....i.e. listen to them!
5:"Small ball": no I don't see any point going in that direction. Its not the league anymore. Rays beat us with HRs last night, not by getting a guy on base with a walk, bunting, stealing bases, and sac flies.
6. Conditioning: that being said, if you're staying with power as the primary driver, than you have to have your power guys healthy all season. Why do so many of our guys miss so many games with "nagging" type injuries? Need to sort this out.
7. Decision on infield: resign DJ for a large sum and keep Torres at SS, or move Torres back to 2nd and sign a better Fielding SS? I hate to say it because DJ is one of my favorite players, but given the cost of resigning and how we need better defensive play from SS position, the latter may be the better thing to do.
