MLB's game 1 saw a 25% drop in viewership compared to last season's game 1, while the NBA championship series was down over 50%.
The cause of the decline aside, no fans and low television viewership means lost revenue and it will be interesting to how these leagueS manage the financial hit they are and will be taking in the coming years.
The landscape of sports appears to be changing.

Hard to gauge anything with the Covid factor. It's a wild card that makes these comparisons difficult.

My interest lies in the revenues lost from advertising and how that will affect player's salaries.

That's a good point. I would imagine they will adjust the salary cap based on this year's revenues. That might throw a lot of guys off their teams.

makes you wonder why they keep jobbing the #1 market Yankees with consistently poor and biased balls and strikes calls

I believe the NFL has agreed to spread this year's hit over a number of years, but I think it's fair to question just how long this pandemic will impact sports income.
I'm hearing masks might be something that will be with us years instead of months. Now that fans have been forced to stay home I wonder how many might avoid the hassle once they are permitted to return?

I think the biggest problem with MLB and NBA are that they are not televised on over the air channels anymore. I stopped watching years ago because I didn't want to pay for cable TV. I lost interest. I only watch during the playoffs. I am betting a lot of people cut the cord during COVID to cut costs which led to the drop. I sure it will pick back up once the economy gets on track and companies start hiring again.

I think there is a large portion of the country, probably mostly boomers and gen x like me, who have stopped watching sports altogether for several reasons. I think it started with the kneeling, which affected the NFL. I think the BLM movement has definitely affected the NBA, and I think some people in general are tired of the mixing of politics and athletics.
It has not stopped me from watching sports at all, not even a little bit. I love sports, and watch it all, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL (ok mostly just playoffs, nothing more exciting than playoff, overtime hockey), etc.
I just think a lot of people have tuned out for all the above reasons and I think there is a good sized group that will never come back

They were going to lose no matter what. They knew that no matter what they did, they were going to alienate a portion of their fan base. they made the calculation, that given the demographics of the fan base, they would lose less if they placated the BLM movement.
Trust me, if they thought the would lose less by not placating the players and BLM, they would have done that.
The decisions made by the NBA had nothing to do with social outrage. They were all about minimizing their financial losses.

Oh I totally agree. And if the ratings are down 50%, it's makes you wonder if they placated the right demographic! Seriously I think they really only had one way to go in the end.

The virus has a lot to do with all ratings being down for basketball and baseball. Not sure about the NFL, it's practically bullet proof.
With baseball, the legitimacy of the season is a problem. It's 60 games and a clear attempt to salvage SOME revenues from this season. A loss of fan's interest is understandable there.

Normally I'm all about watching the playoffs. Not this year. I guess because of LeBron being so political now and the BLM shoved down our throats. Hockey I loved the playoffs. Islanders helped that being a big Isles fan. MLB, I only watched the Yanks. Saw some of the WS yesterday. NFL I've been watching but missed this past weekend. Didn't really miss it. I got to say, MLB and NBA looked weird without fans. NFL and NHL you couldn't really tell. They did a good job.

Here's an idea, leave politics out of sports & the fanbase will eventually return, keep trying to shove it down people's throats & more will say " To hell with ya". I know I did.
I pay $$ to go to the circus to see a clown juggle & entertain me for a few hrs, I could give a fig about his political opinions, same for athletes/actors.
Juggle clowns, just juggle!

Wild ending tonight. Rays looking like team of destiny. Dodgers bridesmaid again? That was one of the best WS games I've ever seen I root for 2 Tampa area teams,Lightning and Rays (Mets are my team but Ray's are my American league team) People still bitch about Tampa having a hockey team while their northern town doesn't have a team, but the reality is Tampa has been one of the most successful franchises in the league since they were formed in 1992. Set a record for most people at a game (games 3 and 4 in 1997 in the playoffs when they played their games at the thunderdome,30K ),since 2002 one of the most successful record wise in the league Now to have the Rays win a WS would really piss people off..their only issue is the stadium ...they are finally building one in Tampa that's supposed to be state of the art...

NBA is a direct reflection of politicizing the sport. Sports are an opportunity to forget about, not be lectured about, the real world. It wasn’t lost on many fans that the NBA would so openly criticize our own leadership but wear a muzzle with regards to China. I definitely watched the Stanley Cup, NBA Finals and am watching the World Series. I notice these things about sports, but I certainly wouldn’t stop watching them over it. Kneel, protest, let your jersey say stuff if you want, but just catch the damn ball.

That D allowed a mediocre Bucs O to get away with just scoring 21.6ppg & finishing 18th in O. Defense wins championships!

I agree. I said a year ago on THEE thread, way before we knew of Covid, that sports viewership and fannies in the seats would dramatically reduce and the leagues would be scrambling in 5 years. I based that strictly on reactions to the kneeling and to continued outrageous increases in player contracts that were going off the charts in all Pro sports. Now, with Covid, most peoples are house bound with nothing better to do, but they're not tuning in to sports, even in playoffs and finals in NBA and MLB. With computers and phones and 200 stations on a TV set these days people have many other choices forn their entertainment. But, let me crystallize pro salaries these days. In 1956 Mickey Mantle made $32,500. He won the triple crown that year... batted .353 with 52 HR and 130 RBI. Yankees very reluctantly doubled his salary to $65,000. So, how did that compare to an average working man? In 1957 the average man's salary was $4,700.00.... So, Mick made more than 14X that average. Today there are several MLB players earning $35 Million, while the average worker's salary is about $40,000. So, today's top athletes are earning 875X more than the average worker. Personally, I think that is so incredibly out of line that I can understand how the average person today thinks that the bullshit salaries has just gotten way out of control, and the inmates are now running the asylum, and they no longer can enjoy watching these prima donna's. By the way, in 1992 Mantle's No. 7 Yankee pinstripe shirt sold for $111,000... more money than he ever earned while wearing that shirt. This is a great article on the Mantle salary. www.nytimes.com/1992/01/26/sports/sports-of-the-times-when-mantle-had-to-battle-for-a-raise.html#:~:text=In%20his%20Triple%20Crown%20season,in%201956%2C%22%20he%20recalled.
