Best OL on the team. He'll be 31 next season, let him play out his contract or extend his pay over 2 years as GL suggested, if you think he'll hold up. Solder is all but retired. You think he's been training all this season to come back next year? We're already in 2021, he's not going to risk covid again after opting out this season. He has $34 million reasons not to retire. He opted out this year, next year he could very well be ready to play. He’s preparing for an NFL season, not going into outer space.

Just an observation.

Or does he want to get back out there? Not many people turn down that kind of money. If he does, he’s a better man than most.

The Giants wan to give Jones a few weapons I would think. The OL is one of those weapons. Keeping it intact as much as possible is pretty key. That's why its good they rotated. They have 7 to 8 guys that have good experience on this front. I'd keep KZ for 2 more years. OL is huge as well all know. You see the other successful QBs and they get some really fine protection much of the time. Its important. Having a deep and developing line is incredibly important... Get weapons next year and not try to fill self created holes (which is why extending Zeitler possibly helps keep the D line intact and risk unessesary recourses going where we need weapons on both sides of the ball...yes this is also the year to get a mid level sefensive weapon behind a dominant line as well) Complimentary football extends beyond on field play but to roster construction as well

Which includes letting Williams and or Tomlinson walk Not with 100 plus cap space starting in 2022 .... Having a lot of cap space also allows teams the luxury of absorbing dead money hits as well if needed

If he's been spending time with his family, and now down in mass and strength - he's likely realizing the strain upon himself to get that all back, then try to loose it again in another year or so.

He's not going to try to make a comeback to compete for a different position solely for the money, which he’s made alot of during his career... And it's not like it's just up for him to decide, why would the Giants even want him back after spending this season getting their two young tackles experience?

I believe SL , idea was to extend him , with a lower value Or, Giants can cut him . ( increase cap ) It all depends how the Giants evaluate Zeitler. Is he regressing or he has another two years . Also, Giants are high on Kyle Murphy . Do they see him as next year starter. Hard , to say without a single snap. Otherwise , Giants would need to sign a FA guard or draft one as insurance. Thing is when signing O linemen average and below are 5 to 8 mill a year. I would prefer they work hard with Hernandez or know Murphy is the answer then pass a hold over till they draft one. All , I gave were options. Hernandez ( 3rd year ) Giants know what his talent level. Murphy, hasn’t had any snaps. To my knowledge.

I think it comes down to this:
Who do the Giants want more, Zeitler or the combination of L. Williamson and Tomlinson. Because the $$$ saved by cutting him is going to go towards keeping both those guys around.

No way should we extend him. He will be 31 next year, you might as well say he’ll be 85 beginning training camp. He plays an extremely violent position, and has done it for a long time. It’s just the matter of time before the wheels fall off, remember Chris Snee? What are the options? Are we comfortable with Lemieux stepping in? Or do we go the free agency/draft route? Either way, it’s a fair discussion. He had an ok year, but who wants to pay ok players $12 million? I say keep him for the year, and draft his replacement. The bigger question is what do we do with Solder? His contract is an anchor to our salary cap. Can’t get rid of him, and no one would trade for him. If we can extend Zeitler and save money on the cap I think it would be a prudent move to solidify this OL. We still have him for another year and save a few million. When we do need to cut him the cap hit would be less. We could still draft a replacement.
Now Solder coming back could solidify the RT position even for another year. Maybe 2 if he does all right. I think it's our best option. His cap hit gets a little less each season. Could Solder and Peart hold the RT. Guess Fleming would be odd man out or 4OT. Both Solder and Peart could be swing OT's. Solder more so than Peart.
I actually don't know if any of these options are an upgrade. But with us focusing on improving other positions and re signing the 2 DL we may need to hold this position for this coming year. Some tough decisions coming up.

Wonder if solder can play og? Pretty sure we'll be stuck with him, if he's versitile could add to his value. I don’t think he ever played the position. Is there guards who are 6’8”? I think we’re stuck with him, yeah we can cut him and take the cap hit. But, is that what the Giants want to do? I would not be shocked they want to keep him as an extremely expensive backup. He was a te in hs and first year of college. Never an og.

You do not let talent walk out the door unless his replacement in already on the roster. We do not have anyone that can fill his role. Renegotiate his contract for a discount in 2021. Give him a large signing bonus (upfront money) and expend him.

You have to keep him and possibly extend him one year to lower next year salary cap #. No sure I understand/agree with the current role for Hernandez as he was never as bad as Lemieux has been in pass protection. Obviously the coaches see something I don't but Lemieux is terrible imho.

He’s a tough call. It all depends how they view Hernandez. Hernandez is still a solid player. The good thing is they have options. That’s not always the case with NYG.

This is the stuff I never bothered learning in depth, but I'm beginning to find it more interesting. I feel DG tends to do a good job of keeping his teams in good financial health. Whether its through front loading contracts, or by not extending contracts to simply move money around, he rarely acts on short term fixes if they'll cause long term problems. I personally think the timing of a contract is one of the most important aspects of a deal. Chaining good deals together is how teams find lasting success. BB was great at it.

I think he could very well retire with the situation with his family. Not saying he will but I could see it. He had millions of reasons not to opt out this year but he did.

Most of us expect the Giants to make cuts and renegotiate contracts in order to create additional cap space this off-season. One player who may potentially be cut is Zeitler. I pasted this article in another thread regarding another topic, but something I found interesting was the paragraph about Zeitler: www.nj.com/giants/2020/12/what-logan-ryans-new-giants-deal-could-mean-for-chances-of-re-signing-leonard-williams-dalvin-tomlinson-in-2021.html. If cut, we apparently save $12M. That's a huge chunk of change. We can use this money to address bigger needs and fill out the roster. Having a solid, veteran presence on a young line is a positive. We can extend him a couple/few years, still free up some cap space, and lock him in long term. Keep things as is and draft another OG in the upcoming draft. We can have the rookie compete with Hernandez and other UDFA's to be Zeiter's replacement in 2022. It's an interesting situation to be in. At this time, what would you prefer we do? He's gone 😂 no questions. It's business, unfortunately.

That would be pretty funny if he played great as a TE next year. He would be a tremendous blocker for that position, wouldn't have to put weight back on or be concerned about strength - at let's say 6"8" and 285 lbs. Could still be a fill in at either Tackle, we're not counting on him to be a starter any more anyway.

How pro scouts advocate for certain contracts is wild to me. How can you not see a player at the end of his prime sometimes. Many don't talk about it but Kiwanuka's extension was one of the worst contracts for our team. We won a ring with it so it got swept under the rug. What were we talking about again?
