That is an opinion not a fact. A fact is our defense was the 27th defense in the league the year before he got here. They were not good. We were 23rd last year....an improvement. Those are facts.

On paper I do.To me it is the question can the DC take the potential on paper and put it on the field,I hope so and want it but haven't seen anything that leads me to that he can. Exactly. The overall talent is better this year, and the talent is in line with how Bettcher apparently prefers to play. Let's see what Bettcher can do now that he has personnel more in line with his scheme. Piddy Ask yourself this. Because I have ponder it. If you are going to rebuild a defense . What they did last year. And I get the reasons for the JPP trade. Why cut or let walk some good players DRC, Shepard, Kennard….. Guys that were not cap killers and bring in lesser talent. That is what some are suggesting as an excuse for the Defenses poor results. To me that is ludicrous and does not pass the sniff test, GL mentioned Curtis Riley and yet, we had DRC on the roster. Not one excuse given for last years debacle, and that is what it was. Points to logic behind it. Unless the DC had confidence in players that were brought in. It seems he did . he had a few AZ players signed . That shows his defense is a square peg in a square hole system and he is probing for the proper pegs . Carrot on a stick. That is what I see.

So what talented pass rusher did he have last year? You miss the point. We had enough talent to run his blitz system . It sucked , it most likely sucked in AZ . His system sucks. Why does this guy have to rebuild an entire D for the second year in a row when it was suppose to be a defense full of players that fit his system and could win. I missed your point? You said he had talent. I asked what talent did he have. You can't answer that.
Now you have said a bunch of times "his system sucks" but have not given a single example of how or why it sucks. You seem hung up on him "tearing it down". The reason no one is upset about this is because A) he isn't the GM and B) why on earth would we be upset that we replaced Apple with Baker? We are improving our team. That's why no one is upset about it.

So Betcher's defense sucks on 8/21/19 and will suck all year?
Glad the crystal ball is back on line and working well today!!
From what I am reading here he already has two bad seasons under his belt and should be fired because NO DC has two bad seasons with roster changes and still has a job.
1......He only has one season under his belt 2......Rosters change every season. 3......Last time I checked he 2019 is still in pre season

Do you know that he had a successful defense without Chandler Jones in it as well?
You miss the point. We had enough talent to run his blitz system . It sucked , it most likely sucked in AZ . He has Jones to bail his inept system out . He does not have that now. His main problem is; As with McAdoo he has no answer on how to adjust his system to compensate if it fails. Here is the time line and the facts. We a good Core of a 4-3 . Need some secondary help and some depth pass rushers. He came in and tore it down to almost nothing . Brought in 22 new Defensive players the fit his system. Built a unit that was a we can win with this defense. Now he has tore it down for the second straight year. Brought in a new bunch of fit his system players. His system sucks. I have been watching football for a long time . I have never ever ever seen a DC tare down a Defense 2 years in a row. Almost every player . Who has ever done that? This I am sure of; this is not the Giants second year in his system. For most of the players it is the first. last year we has JJ. LC Goodson , OV and Tomlinson. Not cut from Spags. Every other player was new, This year we have JJ Tomlinson Ogletree (Martin I think he gets cut) Carter, Hill. From las year. Goodson is going to get cut. And a few rotation guys MaCintosh.... I do not see how anyone is not questioning this? Why does this guy have to rebuild an entire D for the second year in a row when it was suppose to be a defense full of players that fit his system and could win. What is his excuse going to be at the end of this season? Can we give him a second year to succeed? What will your excuse be if they play well?

I think we did see him adjust to his players last year - we didn't have the secondary to handle his blitz schemes so he relied more on the edge guys and line to get to the QB than previous years. This year, it looks like he has a secondary that won't get torched if we blitz so, in theory, he will be able to get more creative with adding blitzes. It will all come down to if our new secondary can hold up past 2-2.5 seconds on those quick passes.

It takes pass rushers 3 years most of the time to reach their peak. That said even when loaded with pass rushers teams scheme around it getting the ball out in less then 3 seconds max protecting and chipping. In these cases which are all the time now the secondary has either throw the timing off of the quick game or cover a little longer giving their guys up front that extra 1/2 to 1 second to get there just the way the game has evolved. This all started way back with the niners trying to beat teams like the Giants Bears Eagles and Skins who all would put your QB on IR in hart beat if he was sitting back there for 4 seconds

Bettcher's blitzing is "exotic", and he likes bringing pressure from the secondary and other odd angles. DLaw up front is a game changer to me, and if he's a 2+ down lineman and stays healthy that's going to disrupt many pockets. That's going to free up lanes for the other guys and I think we're in for feast/famine with this group early. The will make mistakes, missed assignments and such, but also their athleticism will come through on drive stoppers and TOs. I am actually anticipating quite a few more defensive highlights from this group this year. This. I feel the folks who complained about this pick didn't actually watch Lawrence play. The kid is a monster and isn't just a "run stuffing" NT. He consistently collapses the pocket in the passing game and demands double teams. His presence alone should have a positive effect on the entire defense. TEM - Nice research on the sacks. I don't know if we have that player on our roster at this time, but I'm also not sure it's needed. As desertash mentions, and as I alluded to earlier, Bettcher's scheme is just different than what most of us seem to be used to. Blitzes will come from everywhere, and our DB's are going to be active. We may have 8 people with 5+ sacks, rather than 1 or 2 guys with double digit sacks. I could be wrong, but I think our defense is going to be real fun to watch this year. Even as physically gifted as Lawrence is he is gonna need some games to get acclimated to the NFL speed and power he will face guys who can give him a run for his money every week almost.

I think they will be mediocre at best. At the end of the day talent trumps all, and we don’t have the horses to say for a fact right now they will be improved. Next year they better invest heavily in improving the pass rush. We won two titles in ‘07,’11 with guys who can get after the QB. Let me ask you this as well I see an eerie similarity between our pass rushers and our recievers in that both position groups are quite similar in the way that there are a lot of ??s on how good both units are and both have a lot of youth and unproven players and the ones that we have haven't been anything more than above average for a year or 2 at best. Not trying to hijack this but to me this is exactly the reason we are a 6-10 team and both correlate in a way. Its interesting that people who say we are deficient on one side are more than happy with the other side, and vice a versa. I'm letting this play out before I say we need a massive upgrade (and both sides) and let the kids play and hopefully develop To me it seemed they laid the foundation the first two years on offense and defense now it needs to set while they reinforce the other spots like WR and LB pass rushers take time sometimes 2-3 years like Osi and Tuck they got spoon fed same with JPP. This willl be interesting in 2020 seeing what Zo Carter becomes between now and next season how X man grows how Lawrence looks after 4-6 games I see him as the defenses Hernandez hopefully improving throughout the year, we have to remember their preseason schedule has sucked playing 3 teams they will see in the regular season so it is as bland as it gets also, these kids are getting a lot of work against doubles and one on one in games with no line games and only basic blaze packages to help get free rushers, just some improvement will be welcome average would be big

Betcher has proven give him what he needs and you will have a very respectable defense, he started last year telling them they aren't a rookie anymore once they play 3-4 games that is the expectation.

You hope the rookies show flashes and catch on quickly. This is no different for the NYGs. They have several players in place that hopefully will pan out.

Corners need to disrupt coming off the line and out of their breaks and in some cases cover a little longer 1/2 second or so.

Legacy you know as well as I, it's timing and the little things in the draft sometimes your late to the party and miss out Giants and Mahomes. sometimes it just takes having the conviction or set to go up get what you want no matter what the outside thinks.

Can we give him a second year to succeed? What will your excuse be if they play well? He will use the same tactic as usual. Avoid the discussion and pretend it didn't happen. Just like when he bashed Barkley and said how he wasn't that good of a RB predraft lol. Yeah same guy. Also said how Jones won't succeed because his "average air yards" in college isn't enough. He has yet to point out a single thing that is bad about Bettcher's system.

I haven't called for anyone to be fired .I understand what he is trying to do and as was stated coachs try to adjust their systems to their personnel and I didn't see that last year . With that said many different things could account for that , I'm willing to give him a chance with supposedly better personnel and let's see what happens . I just need to see something anything to say we are moving in the right direction Defensively. Just wanted to touch on that point cause it has popped up a few times. There is a pretty good chance that we simply didn't have enough talent no matter who was coaching the D. Let's take a look. Snacks is a terrific run stuffer but even with him as the NT in our 3-4 we got run all over. There was not a big drop off from him to Tomlinson when we trade Snacks. Eli Apple was just plain bad after the first four games, he got traded. OV was hurt a lot and while eventually he was ok he was far from a top pass rusher, he got traded. Landon Collins is a terrific player, but we needed a guy who could cover and that's not his strength, he didn't get resigned.
Who should we have changed our D around? Snacks was in perfect position. Apple was in perfect position. OV is the guy we build around and we had minimum success with him. Collins could have been schemed closer to the LOS but we needed help with coverage because our LBs were not coverage guys so changing his role would have still left a hole in coverage.
A little deeper. BJ Goodson started at MLB and might not make the team. BW Webb start 13 games, he is gone. Curtis Riley started 16 games, he is gone. Tomlinson is very good IMO, but had to change to a new position due to Snacks trade.
So 3 players traded, 3 not signed, one demoted at least (might be cut) and one in a new position. Yeah I am going to say it's a safe bet our D was not loaded with talent last year and we still improved 4 spots (from 27 to 23) in scoring D and 7 spots (31 to 24) in D yards. I'm not saying Bettcher is fielding the 86 Bears here but like the rest of the team we are trending in the right direction.

The offense pretty much is 85% rebuilt or players in place, just need the number 1 type guy to either emerge or get drafted and is a year ahead of the defense in this way

Tem, I don't really see where you're coming from. Maybe you see problems with the scheme you haven't explained yet but I think most DCs we think of as great have good players so I don't think it is fair to say Bettcher's system was as good as it was only because of Chandler Jones.
Also, why do you think he has torn down the team again? Don't we still have most of the players who had significant playing time last year? We lost Curtis Riely, OV and Collins but I think we had good reason and, in the case of Rielly and Collins at least, I think our pass coverage will significantly improve as a result. I think the loss of OV is the only loss accounted for in a non-obvious way: his production with Tomlinson, theoretically, will be made up for (and hopefully surpassed) from the Lawrence and Carter combo.

At the end of the day these 3 are going to determine how this season goes early and early is going to dictate where this season goes. Our corners are very young. If we leave them hanging big plays and penalties are likely. They need Golden, Hill & Carter to be making QBs uncomfortable. This front office has rebuilt the Oline to the point it looks pretty good heading into 19. The area this front office tore down is the pass rush. Sending JPP, Vernon among other out while also passing on Bradley Chubb and Josh Allen. This D won’t survive without a pass rush. Golden has done it in this scheme and is on a make or break year for his career as he will get adequate time to show what he can do. Carter has all the physical tools, time to transition that to production. Hill was our most promising rookie defender last year. If he can take another step could really have something in him. Pressure creates oil, diamonds, and champions. Vernon needed to go. He wasn’t exactly killing it when he was in there, and he was paid way too much for what he was considering he was injury prone. JPP had 12.5 sacks for TB last year that we could have used, but I question wether he will be as affective or healthy this year. I wouldn’t say the front office tore down the pass tush, but rather made some salary cap decision that put the club in a better position for the future. Yes, they decided to build the offense ahead of the defense, this was never going to be a two year fix.

Here is the time line and the facts. We a good Core of a 4-3 . Need some secondary help and some depth pass rushers. I will respond to the rest of your post but first want to touch on this. That is an opinion not a fact. A fact is our defense was the 27th defense in the league the year before he got here. They were not good. We were 23rd last year....an improvement. Those are facts. You can believe what you want. We had a top 5 defense the year before. There was no way the entire defense was unkeepable . Not for one second should you believe that it was, Ross Cockerel let him walk because he was not worth keeping Kelvin Sheppard he sucked why resign him DRC he could not play safety Andrew Adams he was not worth keeping . Only 4 INTs with Tampa Romeo Okwara he wasn't worth keeping PS: having 4 other defense becoming worse, than ours is not an indicator that ours improved . Our defense stayed the same . Not wht i want from a new DC . Show at least improvement somewhere? 2017 Defense 5971 total yards against 4038 passing 1933 rushing 42 TDs giving 2018 Defense 5945 total yards against 4047 passing 1898 rushing 42 TDS Where is this improvement you claim?

What you are saying there was no talent . I get your point . That could be true. But that presents a whole different problem with the DC. He breakdown an entire defense and poorly evaluate the replacements he told the GM to sign. Either way if he had talent and could not utilize them properly . Or he replaced an entire Defense 1 season removed from a top 5 in the league for guys that In no way could not win. You think that is good plan? There is nothing that transpired from the time he was hired to the end of last season that shows me he qualified to run the Defense. Not even a hint. I want to be wrong . If I am not. We will have another season of WTF is wrong with our Defense, I I will say it again. It is unprecedented in the NFL that an entire Defensive unit was retooled in consecutive years.

What I am seeing is not a hint of improvement from our front 7. That concerns me.

I point out a lot. What was good about it last year? You kept saying how great OV and Martin would be in his system last off season. If I recall correctly you said the system more fits OVs style of play. and would be a sack machine. Why was he traded ? People in glass houses should not throw stones

I will respond to the rest of your post but first want to touch on this. That is an opinion not a fact. A fact is our defense was the 27th defense in the league the year before he got here. They were not good. We were 23rd last year....an improvement. Those are facts. 2017 Defense 5971 total yards against 42 TDs 2018 Defense 5945 total yards against 42 TDS Where is this improvement you claim? I didn't claim anything, I gave you facts. More facts for you. Teams scored on average ~30 points in 2018 than in 2017. That is why you didn't see a drop in total TDs given up but you did see a big improvement in ranking.
