Not sure who this writer is but it's worth knowing it's out there...
The luster on Brian Daboll’s bald head rubbed off in record time
The Giants coach mishandled so much this season, and that now seems like business as usual for the franchise
While the New York Giants didn’t intend to undergo drastic changes this offseason, they are now. On the same day that head coach Brian Daboll said he expected both offensive and defensive coordinators to return, the latter reportedly went scorched earth on his boss before storming out. With Wink Martindale gone, and god knows who in, New York can add “Hiring a DC” to its growing to-do list in the coming months.
The alleged reason Martindale became irate was Daboll firing outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins. The two brothers came to the organization with Martindale from Baltimore, and as the 2023 season spiraled with the head coach and DC at odds, the defensive staff partook in a game of office politics that ultimately put them all out of a job.
Reports say Wink and Kevin Wilkins progressively spurned direction from Daboll, whose primary focus is usually on the offensive side of the ball, and felt they’re only beholden to ownership. Fissures between offense and defense aren’t uncommon in football, but it’s on the head coach to make sure the two are copacetic.
Daboll clearly felt the locker room slipping away because his offense wasn’t carrying its weight. That’s why he inserted himself into OC Mike Kafka’s business midseason, which apparently didn’t sit too well with Kafka either. Thus the reason Daboll specified that he expects Kafka to return in that same news conference Monday.
This is what a lack of organizational control looks like. Staff turnover is inevitable, especially in the NFL, so if Daboll wanted to ax a subordinate who was underperforming — like special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, who also were let go — that’s above board. The difference between McGaughey and Johnson getting the boot and the Wilkins brothers is the defense wasn’t really the issue.
If Daboll and Martindale were already at odds, firing his right-hand man, and then speaking for Wink, before speaking to Wink, was amateur hour. To recap, less than 12 months after winning Coach of the Year, Daboll is looking for defensive and special teams coordinators, offensive line and linebackers coaches, and also has to fix an offense that was never truly working to begin with and will be without its starting quarterback until midseason next year at the earliest.
Oh, also, Saquon Barkley sounds despondent about the potential of another stint under the franchise tag, and the Giants have the sixth pick in a draft heavy on QB talent. General manager Joe Schoen isn’t free of blame either as it was his decision to tether the franchise to Daniel Jones following an above-average, likely outlier of a season.
Unfortunately, antics like these are becoming all too commonplace for the Giants. The franchise likes to tout itself up there with the Pittsburghs and Green Bays of the NFL, yet there’s no direction, little patience, and the only recent constants are drama and losing.
The Giants needed to ace last offseason to keep up Daboll’s momentum. That didn’t happen. Now, they face another crucial few months with considerably less flexibility and twice as many questions.

Who is Sean Beckwith? Not a fan of this article. The example he gave of Daboll "mishandling" things was taking more control of the offense?
Seems like a pretty standard offseason after a losing season. A few people fired, some conflict, etc. That's what happens in tough seasons.
I was more surprised that Martindale got hired in the first place...a guy in his first press conference that sounded like he wasn't intrested in being anyones subordinate...and more interested in becoming a head coach than a DC for the Giants.

Daboll and the Giants will be all the better for going through this. Again, let us remember Wink was not their first choice. Lets develop the young players and build a defense that not only turns its over for the O but can play complete defense.

There is probably so much more to this story than we will ever know and most likely a lot of cat and mouse games. One thing that is probably not being talked about but is a cloud that could be hovering around this all...Mara can't be happy with this whole thing playing out like this. Bad picks, bad coaching, etc. are things that can be chalked up to making a bad choice but schoolyard antics...that is another thing. I wonder how many chairs he has thrown or what his thoughts are.

That article is essentially the equivalent of a giants board fan post.
No inside or new info. Just some guy taking about what he thinks.
That’s fine. But I read just as good (or better) analysis on here from guys that don’t like Daboll.
Thanks but no thanks.

I didn't watch any pressers either. Everybody associated with the team must be disgusted including all us fans.

What a joke of an article. Deadspin is a joke of a site as well. Honestly we could put out better articles than them.
I'd be much more upset and think less of Daboll if our D was actually good. It was one of the worst in the league the last two years. Obviously not knowing the chain of command is hurtful to your career.

Also the defense I believe was to 2 slots higher then the offense think they ranked 27th to the Offenses 29th and the edge players struggled to stop the run and ranked bottom 3rd in pressures. If he is gonna fire a good friend in Johnson who's unit was shredded by injuries why would the Edge coaches survive with an underperforming unit they were also the guys who went to the Glazer think the article skips the meat and potatoes of the issues. All 3 units Offense Defense Special teams were not good enough the coach fired underperforming coaches and disgruntled employees that had little interest in trying to mend some fences and give it another try. Wink wanted out and wanted to get himself fired that is clear as day bad fit for him.

Lets develop the young players and build a defense that not only turns its over for the O but can play complete defense. Best thing they can do fro the defense is get the OL to 15 or above keep them nice and rested they need to get into a regular system that is geared to defend the whole field.

I still believe in Daboll, sure he may have a personality quirk and a short fuse... But I seen what he can do with bad QB talent, he made DJ look just below average, he made Tommy Devito look like a competent backup.
He deserves a chance with a high ranking QB prospect in this upcoming draft.

Dan Dugan has reported somewhat similar things. You can choose to dismiss this article if you want…but there is some kind of dysfunction going on. We’ll see if stuff like this continues next season.

Serious don't understand anyone defending Wink here, I like him . With that said Wink can't let his defensive assistants run loose and while we are at it Daboll is the HC you do what he says to do. Daboll wanted a different Defensive scheme against Dallas and Wink refused, the D gave up over 600 yards , I would ****ing yell too! Winks D's have been league lows two years running maybe he needed to be yelled at!

Needs to find that balance with his coaching staff

Weird that Daboll can be hard on his players too, but they still like him. Needs to find that balance with his coaching staff I would think if he wants to last in the NFL as an HC that will be a big part of his own self reflection and evaluation he doesn't have to kiss ass he needs to show guys working for him he cares about them as well. Hopefully he gets it because he is a talented offensive mind and I'm sure he gets defenses because with some decent pieces he figures out how to beat them pretty good, which in turn means he knows what they are trying to to his offense and how their concepts work.

Does that mean if I rub it a Genie won't pop out? If it does pop out can my three wishes be: (?)
1) Stud QB in the 2024 draft
2) An OC that can utilize my brand new drafted QB (and the rest of the O)
3) A OL that is at least functional

Well, lets hope Cowboys choke to the Packers(who NYG beat with Tommy DeVito, yes a playoff team) . That will definitely result in upheaval. NYG will compete for the division then. Keep the faith. N.F.L.--- Not For Long, in any direction. Keep the faith.

He is 15-18 -1. 44% The same record as McAdoo There is nothing shiny about that. McAdoo got fired. Not comparable. McAdoo followed Coughlin and was already the OC with the likes of Beckham and Eli to work with. He didnt understand having football intelligence throughout the entire roster( not Bobby Rainey) was important. He also became a poser and the players sniffed him out. Lost lockerroom. Daboll came to us a proven coordinator/assistant in many areas. A respected football man around the league and part of Championships in both College and the NFL. McAdoo came to us as a guy who could install a West Coast offense so Eli would get hit less and throw less picks. Daboll followed the most dysfunctional era in NYG football since the mid 70s. Not comparable in any way. You know the unprecedented challenges Daboll faced this season.
