Giants fans reading this next sentence are either going to laugh or feel nauseous regret. Ereck Flowers is going to land a big contract as a free agent with some offensive line-needy team. At least if you believe Redskins interim head coach Bill Callahan, who was the team’s offensive line coach until Jay Gruden’s firing in October and is responsible for helping salvage the 25-year-old Flowers’ career. “He’s worked hard to get to where he’s at,” Callahan said, “and he’ll hit the free-agency market and I think he’ll do pretty well.” The Giants will enter the offseason with a need for anywhere from one to three new offensive line starters. Certainly an offensive tackle. But a reunion with Flowers — a flopped 2015 first-round pick and a punching bag for both fans and former Giants — is less likely than anything that could come across a television screen. Flowers carries great animosity for his Giants’ experience. After three failed seasons at left tackle, the Giants tried to move Flowers to right tackle last season. He still struggled, was benched after two games, ultimately cut to no first-guessing and finished last season with the Jaguars. The one thing two regimes of Giants front offices did not do despite outside suggestions was try a move to guard. Flowers has started 14 games at left guard for the Redskins and is the No. 32-ranked guard (right and left combined) in the NFL by Pro Football Focus. Will Hernandez, the Giants’ second-round draft pick in 2018, is No. 44. “I love Flowers. I loved him coming out of the draft. I think the world of him,” Callahan said. “I think he’s one of our better offensive linemen, and to make the switch that he made … he made it remarkably well, and it’s a really good position for him. He’s playing better in live tight-quarter situations. He’s physical, he’s been really good in pass protection, he’s a strong square force in that respect.” If the Redskins are so high on Flowers, why not re-sign him? Well, Callahan might not be around to offer his input when the Redskins hire another coach. Flowers was flagged for 29 penalties during his Giants career and often forced sack-wary Eli Manning to throw the ball too quickly when it was clear he didn’t trust his blind-side protection. “I just like the way he works, how he goes about his business,” Callahan said. “Sometimes, it’s just a breath of fresh air. I’ve had a lot of guys in my career, a couple of different places, that sometimes a different exposure to new techniques, a different system, it kind of revives them.” nypost.com/2019/12/18/giants-bust-ereck-flowers-getting-praise-you-wont-believe/

Good for him...best of luck to him. Yup. He couldn't live up to his draft position, which was not his fault. I'm happy for him. Hope he plays well except for next week.

I still cannot believe we took Flowers when we took him. So many mind boggling picks for so many years......smh.

He should’ve been put at guard in Year 2. But the Giants kept forcing him to play a position he wasn’t good at. I don’t know why they never even tried him at guard. He was a terrible LT but could’ve been a solid guard.

He is playing his best ball at G.

Two different teams and the record of his third team is what? That doesnt even make sense, not even for you. What would his teams record have to do with how he is playing at G?

From what I have read though he is player "better" and doing a decent job but all those fundamental issues remain. They are just hidden more at G than they were at OT. There's a reason OTs make so much money.

It doesn't matter anymore, but yes. Flowers was a reach at 9, and if we're being picky he wasn't the #2 OT.....Scherff and Peat were. He was a consensus late 1st rounder at best, he was known to have terrible technique, poor footwork and hand placement, lacked mobility....but he was strong. Many thought his best chance for success was sliding him into OG where his lack of technique wouldn't be exposed. This isn't a hindsight is 20/20 thing....most of us called it from day 1. Flowers was a reach.

I knew he was somewhat of scapegoat here. sure not a probowler but not as awful as many fans here made him to be especially pass blocking.

I hear a lot from people that moving him to guard would have been a mistake, because his technique was so bad and guard is a more technical position. But he's one of a few big bodied guys that have looked much better inside than they did at tackle. Maybe you don't need to be technically as sound when you are a mountain of a man in the middle.
Happens a lot in every sport when you aren't the prototypical or average stature/skillset for your sport/positions people get disregarded. We all have different skill sets and should be given a non-biased opportunity to show we can make it work.
In saying that I'd never have Flowers on my team. Didn't like his woe is me attitude.

Default Flowers, needed to go
He was never fitting in anywhere along the OL
Outstayed his welcome
Never did the Giants any favors and then became a malcontent
Good for him whatever he can get, amazed we would even discuss him again

His biggest problem was moving his feet, and he was always a decent run blocker. So...the logical conclusion was to move him to Guard, where his poor feet were not as much of an issue inside. Many of us were saying to try him there, which some scoffed at.
To me this is another indictment on the coaching staff. Why after picking him where you did, would you not exhaust every option?

The most glaring point of all is that Bill Callahan can do wonders with an Oline. After he becomes available, can we please sign Bill as our new Oline coach.
