Will drafting a sick ass LT be aweosme hell yeah, will drafting a stud lber be awesome as well, no doubt. The best LT's in the league have helped their teams to success, the best LBers in the league have done the same. If we get one of those at either postion its a ****ing win.
None of you dudes despite how hard you try have even the slightest idea how this works out. If they draft simmons you can be damn sure they think there LT can be taken later in round 2 or something, and vice versa. We as fans get fixated on a few players despite there being so many. There are plenty of players to be had on the O-line and at the LB position.. The team will be okay, so long as their research is accurate.

Man, we were close on that one lmao. A LB that can cover on an OT in round 1 will be great. Hopefully we get the other position in round 2. This has to stop. If we could get our dbs in the vicinity of the wrs, it would be a big improvement over last year. Come on Don, they were simply getting ahead of the curve practicing social distancing. We should laud them for being so caring of their fellow NFLers health and wellbeing.

CBS Sports put up a 7 round mock draft. Here is what they mocked to us. Personally, while we get some good players in this one, not taking OT until the 4th round will be a huge issue for this team, IMHO. Picking Weaver at 36 may be a bit of a reach as well, I would have targetted him more in the 90's: New York Giants ROUND OVERALL PLAYER NOTES 1 4 LB Isaiah Simmons, Clemson 2 36 EDGE Curtis Weaver, Boise State 3 96 C Tyler Biadasz, Wisconsin from KC* 3 99 Traded to Kansas City 4 110 OT Saahdiq Charles, LSU 5 150 WR Devin Duvernay, Texas 6 183 CB A.J. Green, Oklahoma State 7 218 OT Trey Adams, Washington 7 238 Traded to Kansas City from NO 7 247 G Cordel Iwuagwu, TCU 7 255 QB Cole McDonald, Hawaii Tackle is a big need for the Giants, but I'm not sure any of the four options at the top of the draft is far and away the best one. If Dave Gettleman can engineer a trade down to add picks before selecting one, great. If not, the best option is to take an absolute game-changer on the defensive side in Simmons. It'll be on defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to use him creatively to take advantage of his skill set, but he showed the appetite for doing just that in Miami last year with Minkah Fitzpatrick, and that creativity appeared to be one of the reasons Fitzpatrick forced his way out. Good luck accounting for Simmons on every snap, NFL offenses. In Round 2, the Giants pick up an impact player for their pass rush in Weaver, as their biggest addition for that unit thus far has been Kyler Fackrell. The Boise State product racked up 13.5 sacks last year, and the Giants will be hoping for similar production on the next level. In Round 3, the Giants burn one of their four sevenths to move up for a decorated center prospect in Biadasz, who at one point was considered a potential first-round talent. The Giants finally address the tackle spot early in Round 4 with Charles, who isn't going to come in and start right away but has a chance to address that need long-term. Duvernay would be a steal in Round 5 if the deep receiver class pushes him further than his talent suggests he should go, while Green improves depth at cornerback. Adams was at one point considered a top tackle prospect but injuries will likely tank his stock. He's a great gamble for a tackle-needy team late in the draft. Iwuagwu is someone to battle for a backup spot at guard, while McDonald is an athletic developmental prospect at quarterback who can be groomed as a potential No. 2 option. www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/seven-round-2020-nfl-mock-draft-18-trades-255-picks-full-breakdowns-for-all-32-teams/

Just talent wise OTs should be one of the best positions on the board in round 2. I wouldn't be mad at that group though. Some people really like Trey Adams, I didn't think he would fall that far and Tyler Biadasz should be a stud Center.

I think most people around here agree with this, although a select few think there is only 1 way to build this team and anything else will lead to failure. Do the research, grade the players, fix the team. End of the story IMO.

Nevermind my thoughts about taking an athletic niche toy over a legit good player at a premium position of need (and OT is close enough to be in the BPA discussion if weighing positional value as well) Reaching on a borderline day 3 pick at a position where you probably could get a much better player (Uche,Okwara,Baun)... I'm glad this guy doesn't run this team

The #1 Guy on the Big Board Regardless of position at #4 is the best way to go! Yes we NEED a athlete like Simmons to help cover the middle of the field, something we couldn't do last season, I'm tired of Zach Ertz doing this to us because we don't have Linebackers who can run... ...yet some don't think Isaiah Simmons is a "NEED"? I guess those fans solution is to get a Lineman to protect DJ so that we can just score more points and that will fix everything but those fans are WRONG! If you can't stop people in this league you're not winning many games. They can always have DJ move around and having him get the ball out faster to compensate for the lack of great tackles but it is going to be very hard to devise Schemes to cover for Blake Martinez inability to cover down field Blown assignment...nobody was even attempting to cover him Here we simply have a lack of talent...left tackle and running back without the ability to pass block 7 blocking 5...what a mess Very True! Nobody is denying that Offensive Line is a Big Need as well, both at Tackle as well as Center. I wouldn't be upset if we took Tristen Wirfs or any of the Lineman at #4 if they truly feel he is the Top Guy on the Board when they pick and that guy can become a Franchise Left Tackle and make a impact immediately. However, I don't think it is the end of the world if they don't go Lineman with the #4 Pick. Gettleman history has shown that he can find very good Lineman Later in the Draft especially while he was GM with the Panthers.

Quote 1: Exactly what I have been saying. If it's close it's ok to take the player that's lower rated if he is a bigger need (or bigger position). It is not a contradiction at all. "If it's close" being the key here. The other side of that coin "if it's not close then need does not matter". The only question is are one of these OTs close to Simmons on their board? Soon we will know.

That position is harder to fill with a competent player than ILB that can cover and is a more important position. That being said, I'm not going to loose my shit if they take Simmons (or even Okudah, actually) because I think we will have some options at OT in rd 2 that may not contribute immediately but will have a good shot at being long term solutions. That may require a trade up into the first (which at least adds a 5th year option). Hopefully there will be a Center that can contribute after that. Short of a trade back, getting it all is going to be tough.

this is the question that concerns me, how close in talent are the O tackles to Simmons, if we draft based on talent then it would seems to me that Simmons is the pick. . Yes that is the question. So how did I come to me conclusion it will be Simmons. Everyone says mock drafts don't matter but in all actuality in the top 10 picks of the draft they are a pretty good indicator of who your top talent is. For the most part when a talent is graded Elite he is set apart from his peers. Last year for instance you can see exactly who the top prospects within each position were. Bosa (DE), Quinnen Williams (DT), White (ILB), Allen (OLB). That was consistent through the entire process. Then you had the clear 2nd tier guys Ferrell/Sweat/Burns, Oliver, Bush, Gary.
So within a position group you can get a picture of where the elite talent is. Ferrell was never going to go ahead of Bosa. Gary was never going to jump ahead of Allen and Kenneth Murray is not going to jump ahead of Isaiah Simmons. It starts to get tricky when you compare players from different groups though. Sometimes a Clelin Ferrell jumps ahead of Devin White and Josh Allen. The thing is when you look at the mocks you can see where the TOP of each position is, Bosa last year. This year there is no top of the OT group. They are all rated very similar. So that leads me to believe that their talent level is not actually in the elite of the draft, unlike EDGE, OLB and CB (all with an elite talent). It's tough for a position without a clear cut elite talent to jump ahead of another positions elite talent. Like if Marquise Brown or Deandre Baker would have jumped Josh Allen last year.
With that said it only takes 1 team, in this case the Giants, to rank 1 of those OTs as elite and then they will take him. That is certainly possible. It's just not very likely judging on past drafts. People like to compare this class to 2016, but that's only because the number of top OTs is the same. The 2016 class was rated MUCH higher than this class. 7.5, 7, 6.8, 6.3 compared to 6.85, 6.7, 6.49 and 6.48. So the top guy in this class would be #3 in 2016. The top guy in 2016 (a better OT class) went at #6.
Anything is possible, but the signs point to us not taking an OT at 4. This is one of the best OTs classes I have seen and I've said that for months. I just doubt we take one at 4.

I go through a similar thought process but keep in mind that Simmons is only a 7.05 - a different category for that site but not that far off. And, to be fair, that site isn't perfect. And even if we think they are perfect, if we go with their descriptors, a "year one quality starter" OT is probably going to be more useful over a 10 year career than a "perennial pro-bowl" LB who can cover. Add in LBs breaking down faster and I think what I just said is a slam dunk. The website I posted the other day paints a similar picture - Simmons rated higher by the experts but not by a lot. Add in media and then fans and the crowdsourcing becomes clear - Simmons is rated higher by everyone but not by a great deal. So, danger of groupthink aside, if it is correct, I still want the slightly less rated OT over the LB. Last, as we discussed in another thread, I think the Simmons-like LB is going to be the norm for a while so, in the upcoming years, will be easier to find than a Wirfs. Dye and Gay Jr. in this draft, maybe. All that and I still won't lose my shit like some if we take Simmons. It will be nice to see some TEs get covered for a change.

Stanley would have been a 1st round pick the year before and really upped his stock after 1 more year in college and was very highly rated.
Nothing wrong with want an OT, but wanting one does not change how they are rated. Us needing one does not change how they are rated. I was just talking about how they are viewed/rated compared to the 2016 class. I think there could be 6-7 starting OTs in this class. But in trying to predict things we have to set that aside.

The point of my post wasn't whether that site was perfect or not. I accepted the premise that they are accurate for this discussion and explained why, even assuming they accurately assess talent, it makes more sense to take an OT. Regardless of what I want.

player rating....great discussion. Andrew Thomas, for example, rated very high as a future LT. We know what he is. Simmons rated very high as what? LB, DB, Edge, etc. What is his best attribute? Thats my issue with him. What "will" he excel at in the NFL? I get why he will get picked high in the draft but I just have an issue as to what he will develop into in the NFL

He is rated by everyone as the best LB in the draft. He went to the combine as a LB. On draft day they will announce him as a LB. He will wear a LB # in the NFL. Don't be fooled because he lined up in different areas of the field. Not 1 player in the 35 year history of the Butkus award has been awarded it and gone on to be a DB in the NFL. Zero. Has it really been that long since the Giants had a stud LB that we can't recognize a 3 down LB anymore?
I could see this issue if he was rated as the 3rd best LB, the 4th best S and the 4th best CB; but that isn't the case.

I get why he will get picked high in the draft but I just have an issue as to what he will develop into in the NFL If we take him, I predict he will line up ILB 70% of the time and will often be used with Peppers to confuse the shit out opponents with their taking on each other's roles post snap.

I get why he will get picked high in the draft but I just have an issue as to what he will develop into in the NFL Well he was the best LB in college football.
I could see this issue if he was rated as the 3rd best LB, the 4th best S and the 4th best CB; but that isn't the case.
gotcha

That is one really interesting thing. I think Peppers is a very versatile player that has not been used to that extent in his career. IMO he could do exactly what Collins did the year he almost won D MVP. It would be very interesting to see how we use Peppers and Simmons together since both can be moved around from time to time and fill different roles.

Everyone in our backfield last year seemed confused about the scheme. Not sure you can use last year to judge Peppers potential going forwards.

Hope he stays healthy and takes a step up in his quality of play.

Well, I hope we will confuse our opponents moving forward I mention Peppers because he has basically been spoken of in the same way as Simmons, just at Safety. Great athlete with versatility; able to move all over the field, etc.

That's what makes it so hard to judge the young guys on D, they were on an abysmal system with terrible coaching. New staff should be a huge improvement in, and of itself.
