DeAndre Baker’s bail amount may mean case is unraveling
The $200,000 bail set Sunday for DeAndre Baker sounds like an onerous amount, but it was not, given that the Giants cornerback signed a four-year contract worth $10.5 million and last year received a signing bonus of $5.67 million.
Broward County Judge Michael Davis surely knew this, and was fully cognizant Baker would easily make bail and get released, rather than remain jailed.
This is exactly what happened.
This could be an indication that despite the serious charges against Baker — four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault — the case might be unraveling, with witnesses recanting on their initial statements, a local defense attorney said.
“From what has been presented to the public from the arraignment it seems that this case may not be as strong as the prosecution has alleged,’’ David Touger, a New York-based criminal defense attorney, told The Post. “The public must remember all is not necessarily as it seems and people who had [Baker’s] career done and over might have to eat a little crow. This is America, and he is innocent until proven guilty.
What Touger described as “a nominal amount’’ for Baker’s bail leads to educated speculation.
“There has to be some weaknesses in this case,’’ Touger said. “The prosecution does not seem to have gone at Baker or his co-defendant very hard. If they had a strong case one could assume that they would have really fought hard for remand and no bail.’’
Baker has many legal, Giants and NFL entanglements to navigate. Even if he is cleared of all criminal charges, he is subject to the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy and could face a suspension.

Meh...with jails releasing convicts due to COVID, I wouldn't read much into them not holding a guy accused of a crime.

if there ends up being no case why would the NFL suspend him? I guess if they do their own investigation and find some things that aren't criminal but against league policy

The only certainty is that after he pays his lawyer baker will be on welfare.

I guess if they do their own investigation and find some things that aren't criminal but against league policy I remember players getting suspended without being arrested. I think Zeke's situation was like that and the KC running back got a way for punching that woman without being arrested.

$200,000 is still a lot and bail is set based upon a guideline, or what is called a schedule, so even though the case may be weak, strong, etc. Schwartz is reading way too much into this. It is the same with sentencing where there are guidelines and the magistrates and judges have very little leeway in both.It is why billionaires and millionaires get what seem to be a paltry sum set for bail unless they killed someone.

Last thing I saw is his Lawyer says the case was garbage sounds like they were trying to scam 2 NFL players supposedly there was a fake rolex involved. His lawyer says baker might be the next Ray Lewis not Ray Rice as far as being scared straight. This seems to line up with people recanting there original statements before they end up in the hot seat facing charges. No matter how this turns out Baker should be battling for his spot on the roster and on 53 or 55 whatever it is if he makes the team.

I hope for the best for him, alot more at stake here then football. From what his Lawyer is saying the police had 0 choice they have the statements seriously. That said he says the case is garbage and Baker is scared straight. Who wouldn't be but a hardened criminal he stood to lose everything not just football.

I think only 3 or 4 have murdered people since they got out. I’m sure the decedent’s family are very appreciative of the court’s concerns for the incarcerated.

Who wouldn't be but a hardened criminal he stood to lose everything not just football. Exactly. I can't remember what punishment did Ray Lewis get from the NFL if anything for his situation? The punishment was $250,000 with no suspension.. Things are handled differently now so his example might not be the best comparison at this time..

Evaluate him without this incident. We have enough real facts about how he's plied his trade over the past 4 years. We don't need to integrate speculation around the incident.
Do you want him on the roster?

Do you want him on the roster? Yes.....before this incident we were pleased with how he started to turn things around toward the end of the season and were looking forward to him being coached up under Judge. If we are evaluating him without this incident, then that is the honest approach.

Do you want him on the roster? Yes - let's see if he matures. If not, then he doesn't play. Resources have been spent already so the only thing to guard against is, as you pointed out elsewhere, the distraction he could cause.

The question is did it even happen his Lawyers sound confident with video that this is bogus who knows tho there still could be more evidence coming from the prosecution.
