He is literally on pace to break Aaron Judges HR record of 62, while possibly winning a Cy Young
Through 86 games last season, Aaron Judge had 30 home runs.
Through 86 games this season, Shohei Ohtani has 31 home runs.
And he is a free agent after this season.

Ya know the Angels really have 2 players that are generational and don't get anywhere the credit that they deserve. Mike Trout when people say he is the reincarnation of Mickey Mantle is just not gossip and fodder for a broadcast. Before "The Mick" hurt his knees he was considered the fastest man in baseball in the 50's. Watching Trout play for a week you really get to see the talent of this man. Personally watching Mick as a kid I lean toward him. The Mick was really great and I was a Dodger fan. Got to see Mick play everyday as well as "The Duke" and "Willie". And now your telling me they have another reincarnation in Ohtani of Babe Ruth ? If they have anymore players that look like Lou Gherig or Joe DiMaggio it's some mad scientist at work here. But son of a gun I don't know if even the Babe hit all those HR's while he was pitching ? I know people compare him to Babe Ruth but that is an unfair comparison. Ohtani is an elite player however Ruth is in another category. Before he became a hitter Ruth was a star pitcher with a No Hitter under his belt. In 1927 he hit 60 Hrs 3x more than the closest player. He had more HRs than entire teams. This was in the dead ball era and before physical conditioning and nutrition. His career BA was .340 (I think) BTW as a pitcher his fastball was regularly recorded around 100 mph, 94-46 record and a career era of 2.28. If that would be projected to our times he would put up video game numbers, especially if he started his career as a hitter.. AS for the "MIck" it was said he was the fastest player going from home plate to 1st ever. He often made it in under 3 sec. He could have easily stole 300 + bases but the managers discouraged him from doing that. And that on a bum leg..

Sometimes it's fun going back and reading posts from 2-3 years ago and seeing how they turned out. Now in this case I was just scratching the surface on Ohtani. Last year I still would have given Judge the MVP after breaking Ruth's record of HR's. I just feel he is the only one who did it not using steroids. Even though any other year Ohtani wins in a walk This year Ohtani has already won the MVP award he is just letting baseball hold it for him till the end of the year. He might win the Cy Young also. I know Newcombe and Koufax have done it I don't know if any others. I think Bob Gibson also.

Angels are dumb, but I get it, they are at least trying.
They do not trade Ohtani, who is leaving them after this season, and add Giolito to the team for a playoff push.
They could have landed 5 top prospects for him. Instead, they are rolling the dice on 2023. I guess there isnt really a front runner this season. Orioles and Rangers are heading the AL right now. NL has the best team in the Braves, but other than that its the Dodgers, Astros, Rays (wow have they fallen) all not having great seasons.

The talking heads are saying that Ohtani is interested in playing meaningful games in September and wants to play in the playoffs. The Angels are 3 or 4 games out of last playoff spot. So if they make a push and become buyers instead of sellers maybe just maybe stays with them if they match highest offer. If a team trades for him like you say it will cost them top prospects in their system. So if you trade you better be willing to go all the way to sign him. And he better like where he is or he says no and your out those top players. It's a gamble, yes he could give you a World Series but for only 1 year if he doesn't sign. Ohtani's going to be a 600 million dollar man at minimum over 10 years. All the big dogs are coming Yanks (Judge and Ohtani in the same lineup, Oh Brother) and the Dodgers top 2. Plus every other team will see how he fits for them if they can. It's a hard roll of the dice. But we've never seen anything like him.

They simply got fooled into thinking they actually have a chance by beating up on mid and bad teams like the Yankees, Pirates, and Tigers. Arte Moreno also doesnt want to be the guy who traded one of the best players in league history in his prime. I kind of get it, but letting him leave for nothing EOY would be wild. I hope that we also don't get fooled into thinking we have a chance after sweeping the horrible Royals and splitting with the underachieving Mets.

Ohtani in 2 games today
Game 1: 9 IP 1 hit 0 ERs 3 BBs 8 Ks Win Game 2: 2-3 2 HRs 3 RBIs
Is he really going to break the HR record a year after Judge broke it?

OK, So the Angels are keeping Ohtani and are going to become buyers at the deadline make a run at the playoffs in the hope Ohtani would then consider staying with them.
I get it, I think if you trade him you lose him so go for it if you lose him at least you tried. The other side of the coin if they lose him they get nothing.
A tough call, the owner didn't want to be the guy who traded away the best player in baseball and the best player in generations.

Wow, devastating for him and his bank account. This is the one thing that is the toughest to predict. Angels should have traded him and got a mega return.... Missed opportunity. Shohei Ohtani injury: Angels superstar suffers UCL tear, won't pitch again this season, but surgery unknownTerrible news for him, and MLB in general. This is his second major arm injury. Might be the future DH only sooner rather than later. The human body can only take so much. "Ohtani, who had Tommy John surgery in October 2018, has dealt with a slew of minor ailments in recent weeks, including fingernail and blister problems. More recently, he had a start skipped because of arm fatigue. He's also publicly expressed that he was feeling tired, a byproduct of his unrivaled workload as a two-way player."

Horrible time for this to happen for him, but good for every team looking to sign him. This is exactly what scared me (and probably many GMs) about the contact he would demand. Not sure about the statistics for coming back from 2 Tommy John surgeries. We'll find out with possibly the 2 best pitchers in the game, Jake and ohtani doing it at the same time. Although ohtani has the advantage in age, he doesn't in mileage as a dual player. What do you think the market will be in 2024 or 2025 for ohtani ?

However I think this justifies the thinking that there are very few 2-way players that can keep up a level of excellence over time. Something gotta give.I think in the future he would be relegated to a normal hitter and brought in for emergency relief pitching. Too much wear on the body

If he racks up a huge season in front of Judge which could really happen, he could get a 12 year $1B contract. Inflation has destroyed the value of the dollar.

700 million for any baseball player is absurd on every level manageable. Great player obviously, but a ridiculous contract.

Barring injury, he is a lead pipe lock for the MVP award. He's about to get $500 million in the offseason. I was off by 200 million!

The Dodgers who continue to spend money like it’s free.. Are now on the hook for the worst contract on record. As good as the kid is, he will never and I mean never live up to those expectations. He will not only have to hit the cover off the ball.. He will have to send it to orbit. Playing in front of the five angel fans was one thing.. Now he will be in front of the world as every at-bat and pitch will be analyzed and scrutinized.

One thing I'm still kinda missed off about is he is still playing on the West Coast. It's Trout all over again. Most baseball fans are in or from the North East. Most MLB fans won't stay up to watch the 10pm Dodger games. Cuts the amount of eyes watching him in half.

I live in Socal, so I will be able to watch a lot of their games......if I were to go to a bar lol. Spectrum has exclusive rights to Dodgers games, so even more people will miss their games. Ironically, it was way easier for me to watch him play in Anaheim.

California sucks as far as taxation, but the federal government are criminals for what they do to the people in this country trying to make money. And those are current rates which will undoubtedly rise going forward. It's not locked in like an interest rate could be. Most people who own property are feeling that right now. All that said, he can survive. That's still over $300M in cash he gets. I think about this everytime one of those mega jackpots get that high.

The cap on SALT on tax returns has been pretty much a punch in the balls. Ohtani can only put 10k on his Schedule A for SALT, no matter how much he pays in state taxes. I can't wait for the TCJA to be dead and buried come 2025.
